OT: Prince on guitar

Someone posted a link to this on Fark today and reminded me of it.

Check out fucking Prince of all people taking the extended solo here. Friends have lambasted me in the past for saying it, but if he ever decided to record a pure guitar album, it'd be groundbreaking. Guy's just totally got his own thing going on, as always.

Solo starts about 3 minutes in, maybe a bit more.

Great performer, he always played amazing guitar solos live.

definately a legendary "geetar" player in Prince. Yeah he's a little nutty, but what entertainer isn't? No offense JSS, but you gotta be a bot crazy to get up there night after night and do what entertainers do. After a while, you get tired of the same old same old, (I'd imagine) and want to go off and do your something that makes YOU happy, not just everyone else. Prince (thankfully) is guilty of doing his own thing, but I see nothing wrong with that at all.

Genius isn't even a strong enough word for what Prince is/does.

I always thought Prince was one weird dude but a brilliant musician, and that video certainly proves that. I must admit that I didn't know he was quite that good on the guitar. Thanks for posting!

Prince's guitar playing kicks MAJOR ass!

He played while my guitar gently weeps at the rock n' roll hall of fame and it killed. He'd never heard the song before (he says).
He walked out, played a killer solo and walked out of the building. Man!

Sure, Prince is a talented performer, writer, singer, guitarist, arranger, producer, and packager. He's miles ahead of a lot of other musicians, to be sure. But he is not the END ALL, BE ALL of music. I mean, COME ON!!!

I think what it is, is that it is "cool" to say that Prince is cool. I'm sure half the people that say that have no idea why they say it, only that's it's cool to say it, and that they think they're part of the IN CROWD by saying it.

I say, if Prince is the END ALL, BE ALL, then prove it. Exactly WHAT is it that makes him genius? How has his music transcended all music styles, and influenced future music? How has his guitar playing changed the playing field like Eddie Van Halen, or Jimi Hendrix?

It's not sales. There are many other musicians/groups that have outsold Prince. Michael Jackson has sold more records than Prince.

I personally feel that Jimi Hendrix, back in the 60's, in three measly years, achieved all that Prince has done, and SO MUCH MORE. In terms of influence, his devisive changing of Rock Guitar.... I mean, Jimi has earned his place in the gallery of greats.

The Beatles, as well. Their influence has markedly changed Rock Music. They are definitely in the gallery of greats.

But both the Beatles and Jimi have done A HELL OF A LOT MORE to change music than Prince has.

So, all you people... I concede Prince is a great all around musician, but what EXACTLY makes him a genius?

I'm not a big fan of Prince but he is a pretty good guitarist. As for that version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", the solo is okay but it didn't do much for me. My favorite version of the song is the one by Jeff Healey.

But...

His music BORES the absolute piss out of me. For those that like him, that's cool....we all like different things. However, I personally think the guy is among the most over-rated "musicians" EVER.

Genius can't be validated by how many people are influenced or to what degree. Influence can't even be objectively measured. You may recall that Neal Schon wasn't in the Roling Stones' 100 greatest guitarists despite the multitude of his peers and JOURNEY fans that say he's their inspiration.

I think Prince' genius is incomparable to any other musical artist as his art is diverse beyond anyone. I don't believe it's fair to compare and I wouldn't even begin to do so. Jimi was a great guitarist and had a solid voice but his genius was the guitar alone. You can't take that away from him. Prince' genius is his guitar, voice, production, choreography, lyrics, marketing, packaging, etc., etc. He does it ALL.

Saying that he's not a genius because you don't think his level of influence is up there with The Beatles or whomever may be well-intended but it violates the fundamental definition of genius.

Love or hate his styles of music, Prince is one hell of a musician. He plays like a dozen or so instruments....WELL. I wish I could remember a quote Clapton once said about him...something about music being safe as long as THAT guy is around and all he and everyone else has to do is follow along. He is well respected by most professional musicians. He might be odd, but he is in a class with few others, talent wise.

ALSO - as I noted above I liken him to Chaplin in that he's a diverse talent that writes, sings, plays, produces, chroeographs, markets, etc. etc.

You're making the same mistake Dave is making regarding influence. Influence and genius are two different things.

Dude, your fundamental definition of genius is so broad, I can add just about any-fricken-body to that. Just because Prince is multi-talented doesn't make him a genius. How has he changed the face of music? HE HASN'T.

You absolutely can measure genius by influence. If a musician CREATES something new, that hadn't existed before, and it changes the face of music... INFLUENCES IT, and affects how it is created in the future....... that's musical genius.

The genius of Jimi Hendrix CHANGED THE FACE OF MUSIC. He was more than just a guitar player, as you see him. In fact, I can say the same things about him that you say about Prince: Jimi's genius is his guitar, voice, production, lyrics, marketing, packaging.. his stage persona, his choreography. Prince has never done anything as eventful as burning his guitar in effigy.. creating one of the most memorable visions of rock music ever... or even played anything as groundbreaking and influential as his take of the Star Spangled Banner.... or given voice to the haunting destruction of warfare in Vietnam as he did on Machine Gun. Dude, Jimi did all that AND MORE... in three frickin' years. Prince has had 20 - 25 years so far, and NOTHING he has done matches all of Jimi's accomplishments. Prince even mimicks Jimi in the final scenes of PURPLE RAIN... I dare you to ask Prince himself if Jimi is not a genius. Jimi, with his collaborators, was a pioneer in the use of the studio. Have you heard any of his music? You can put one Jimi song up: LITTLE WING... and it blows away anything Prince has done or ever will do.

You still have not given me proof that Prince is a genius. All you say is that he can do a lot of different things. That's fine and dandy. That's not enough to make him a genius. There are a lot of musicians that do all of the things Prince can. Diverse? I've never heard Prince do any music that was remotely metal, thrash, country, tejano, easy listening, or even classical in nature. Think about it... just how diverse is he really? Personally, I believe he is firmly planted in RnB, and club/dance music.

Neal Schon is not a genius, either. He didn't do anything to CHANGE THE FACE OF MUSIC like Jimi did. To hell with what Rolling Stone says.... their editorial bullshit ceased to be relevant YEARS ago. Or are they the ones that started the whole PRINCE IS A GENIUS thing?

Yes, that is it...EXACTLY. I DO NOT like Prince...and I personally think he is VASTLY over-rated. That is just my opinion...however "uninformed" it may be. His "body of work" may be outstanding in the eyes of many...but it doesn't do a damn thing for me. And yes, I've heard it. But, that's just MY opinion...Don't lose sleep over it, dude. :lol:
