How fans only "tolerate" new material

The only guy who can put out NEW music and everyone stay in there seat is Springsteen. His fans are twice as loyal as Journey fans to be honest.

I like what he does...In his 3+ hour setlist, the ONLY song that gets played nightly is Born to Run. other than that, he gives the band a NEW setlist 2.5 hours before going on. Keeps them on their toes and keeps the band and tour fresh.

I remember reading somewhere about Billy Squire only playing his new CD. No classic hit's, the crowd almost rioted as he walked of the stage. Basically said "F.U" to everyone in attendance.

Billy Squire has a crowd that watches and Pays to see him play? Wow.

God this reminds me of the Great White/Whitesnake concert I went to back in 1987. I watch as some guy pissed in a baggie(NOT a Ziploc) and then TOSSED it over his head behind him. I was so glad I was off to the side. That was the most disgusting thing I'd ever seen!

Man if I was the one behind him that got hit, that "disgusting thing" you'd seen would have immediately been trumped by you witnessing this guy as a bloody pulp writhing around in a large puddle of his own blood

It's a shame because they're probably rich enough to take a few risks. Like Robert Plant. He played only a handful of Led Zep classics on his tour this year....and most of the concert was devoted to new or recent material...and when he did do the Led Zep songs he totally reinvented the arrangements.

Did this appeal to the lowest common denominator? The casual fan? No - not one bit. But did Plant himself have a more fulfilling and creative time? Did he feel he was moving forward and not just going through the motions? Well, it certainly looked like it.

For someone who FOREVER in the 80's wouldn't touch a Zeppelin song in concert, now he won't play any of his 80's solo stuff. I was really disappointed when I saw him last summer. To hear the Zep songs was cool, and the new stuff isn't bad, but what I would have given to hear, "Heaven Knows" "Ship of Fools", "In The Mood", "Big Log" etc. That was a bummer.

Yes - I was disappointed that he didn't play "Big Log" (etc) too - but I still admired the guy for being unpredictable and for not sticking to his Greatest Hits.

Could Journey today have a hit with a song like "photograph"?

Ok here's the thing. I was at Hall & Oates last nite as u know. They've been around since the 70s, with huge hits in the 80s. In 2003, they came out w/a new album. "Do It For Love" (which was not the best song on the album IMHO but a good one nonetheless) reached #1 in the adult contemporary charts. "Forever For You" (a much better song) reached #3. "Man on a Mission" (definitely not the best song by any means) reached #16. That's 3 top 20 hits from that album. (I thought they should have released Miss DJ before the others but obviously, they knew what they were doing.) Damn. After all these years, they scored again. Now, when I saw them in 2003 just as they released that album, they sang "Do It For Love" & "Forever For You". Everyone got up and went potty or hit the beer line during those songs. It didn't seem to detract from their ability to be hits tho! I realize they're considered "blue eyed soul" and Journey is "melodic rock". But w/the resurgence of melodic rock at the moment, shouldn't Journey be wondering what H&O did differently in terms of promoting that album?

Yes! Hall and Oates are yet another inspiring example of a 'classic' 70s/80s act who can still move forward and be successful.

I didn't know that, Deono. Sounds like a great system to give the band a new setlist just before the show.

I might be wrong - but I think Bob Dylan changes his set around constantly according to his mood too.

I'd say it is up to the artist to take the lead. The arists who seem to attract the most respect and devotion are those who don't try to humour the fans...Rush, Springsteen, Dylan...they all set the agenda and never allow the casual fans to influence the set-list.

Greenday played most of their new album after it just came out and it was SRO for the entire show. One of THE best rock shows I've seen in years.
