I have heard that this song sounds a lot different on the reissue. Can anyone confirm this? Would anyone be kind enough to post it? I only had spare cash for 2 reissues right now and I didn't get Frontiers...

lol, I love the original version. It's SO different from anything else they did. Not being so polished is one of its charms for me.

Probably because they remastered it. Have any of you seen the video for this song too? It is interesting........

THIS is what AFI wants confirmed...not just "is it a better version?"

HOW MUCH DIFFERENT IS IT?

=======================================

What the HELL did they do to "ONLY SOLUTIONS"?????

It's almost a whole different song. They CHANGED the sound of Neal's
guitar completely and brough Jonathan's keys forward into the mix
(keyboards? This song had THAT MUCH of a keyboard line??). It's no
longer the guitar-heavy post-modern angst -- it's a jangly poppy thing.

I compared the original with the reissue version to make sure I was
hearing it right -- yeesh. There's no album notes or credits on this,
so I'm guessing this isn't a re-recording. Either these were other
tracks recorded at the time & discarded...or the re-mastering
engineer was trying to get creative.

I'm not sure I like the difference.

Monker, could you post both versions for me to hear, please? I would like to hear them, since I cannot buy the cd's for awhile. :)

Nope...don't have. And, I probably won't get them.

That wasn't my review...it's from another 'source'.

I like the Time version a lot....gotta hear how they butchered this. How can you fool w/ Neal's guitars?

I've listened a few times & I have to say I like the remastered version. I am comparing it w/the version on Time3 b/c my other version of Frontiers is on vinyl (altho I ripped it onto CD) but sounds like the Time3 version. The sound is so much better now. I wouldn't say it's like a whole new song. I don't know that Jon's keys are more forward. They're cleaner tho much much cleaner. They were more subdued in the old version's mix. Does that make this more "poppy"? I dunno if I'd go that far. The guitar is also cleaner IMHO. & Perry's voice is more...well I hear "the rasp" a bit more on "Oh yeah" & "logical solutions". Jon's voice in the bg vocals also seems "stronger" to me. I forgot how much I loved this song tho & this is really an improvement in my POV.

PM me if u want to hear it for urself.

Perry was always about turning down Neal's guitars...he's outta the band and is still doing it.

I don't think the guitar is tuned down honestly. NIG (the ultimate expert on all things Neal) said he thought the guitar sounded brighter.

Turned down, I assume you meant to write, yes, it does sound like a remix situation rather than the volume being turned down, this was really just a joke I was attempting to make with 13, as he, NIG, others and I have talked and joked in the past about Perry turning down Neal's amps.

Turned down or not. Just the messing around PERIOD with those guitars in any way. It's like...why? Unless YOU played them why would you alter them?

Yeah, I don't see any reason to change what's already done beyond the remastering. Just doesn't seem right to me. And if I gave a damn at this point about the Perry solo stuff, I'd be pissed at the possibility that the For The Loath Of Sappy Music reissue may have been altered through the use of alternate takes or production.

because most of us loons already have "For The Loath Of Sappy Music" , :P
so I for 1 am looking forward to something new from master procrastinator. This may be the only way we get it
& I probably would not have gotten it if tragchk had not brought all of that up. Not my favorite album, and now I'll have 2.

I do think it's a slippery sloap when you start changing old records, though...

Red 13 - what's with the rolling eyes? Your prophecy that NMT's joke would go down like a "lead balloon" has been entirely wrong. So far two Loons have found it funny. Rich...but funny nonethleless.

The rolling eyes was at the Perryloon having to reach to take an Augeri potshot at a guy who's an avowed Neal head more than anything.

Thin-skinned about the Perry jokes?

Well, I'd say that NMT has enough of an Augeri bias to be on shaky ground when he calls any other singer a "sap".

ok, perhaps blasphamy. but I DO wish they would have done a major overhaul on Back Talk. the music on that one is KILLER!!! I wish they would have change the lyrics at least, and maybe the whole vocal arrangement. what a waste of great music.
maybe that's something JSS could do with Jrny. redo this song! (over perry's cold dead body, I'm sure   )
