Small airplanes are not actually that difficult to afford. Obviously, you can't be poor and own one but they are less expensive than most people think. Anyway, as long as you've had the training, it typically isn't all that risky, either.

Read the 4 year old plane cost $187,000 and was equipped with a parachute in case of engine failure
you pull the shoot and the plane floats down safely.

Lots of those guys can almost spend that amount on a car.
It wasn't a jet. Actually the price didn;t sound bad for a plane.

Too bad they didn;t get over the water and pull the shoot.
They would have had a heck more of a chance than crashing through a building.
The aircraft only got it's nose 2 feet inside the structure
the rest of it broke off and fell 30 stories.

It is very lucky noone in the building or on the ground was killed.

One report was they were low on fuel.
If they just took off that's not likely unless they didn;t check...stupid
failed sensors or a gas leak.

Anyway I don;t think they thought it was that severe
or else they should have headed to open ground and pulled the shoot.
Maybe they tried...maybe the shoot didn;t work
Maybe it wouldn;t work under such low flying conditions
Still when in a plane with mechanical failure
I don;t know why they were flying so tight around Manhattan...
Now I hear no prior reports of mechnical failure
They flew around Statue of Liberty and by FAA guidlines
when flying so close to Manahttan which apparently was allowed they had to stay below 1100 feet to allow clearance for passenger jets.
That space they were flying in is a traffic nightmare with helicopters and the sort
so it was a quirk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He had an instructor on board and the plane is equipped with dual controls so he was flying with backup.

Flying is statistically safer than driving on the freeway
but the plane crashes make the news...

Remember Look at JFK Jr/ another in experienced pilot flying late in bad conditions and he was not good at reading the instrument panel.

John Denver if I recall was pretty experienced but he had an experimental aircraft

Flying with passengers is something only experts should do.

There's nothing wrong with flying just got to make sure you get the training & use judgement.
Seems a few of these people get cocky & make a bad name for flying.
The thrill seekers buzz buses & houses for the fun of it.
the air is no place to get crazy.
Still they do the same thing in cars
and alot of the same people will die in a car just as much as an airplane...

Thought I read he had 96 hours flight time?
That;s not alot
Min for license is 40
so it;s true he had limited experience
Also read the destination was CA
and perhaps they were just sightseeing before they went off cross country

Still it's Sad
He had a wife and young son
and in the few seconds of a tragic accident he is gone

In 2005 the major league minimum wage was 316,000. This is ride the pine money. I don't think he had any problem affording his hobby.

You would think in an emergency the instructor would have taken over the control of the plane.

I saw some test video on CNN :( that shows the parachute in action. I did not know that some planes have this feature.

And just to put my $.02 in. This is just like that Tillman story. Irks me to no end. Who gives a flip?! Why are celebrities and sports stars instant heroes? They are no more important than you or me. It's the people in that bldg that we should mourn. Who cares about some baseball player. And don't give me that 'America's greatest past time' bs either. It's the working class that lived in the bldg who are important, not some overpaid dumb jock.

later~

Since when can "working class" people afford million-dollar apartments? That's what the ones in that building go for. Writers, actors, part-time celebrity residents live there, not blue-collar workers. I'm not saying I don't feel bad for anyone who was affected regardless of their social status. Just making a point you might have missed.

I do agree with the "instant heroes" comment though.

Anyone think the plane was tampered with?
