JSS wrote:Perry didn't only borrow Sam Cooke's phrasing & style, he downright stole a melody & lyric on Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin....if you're a real Journey fan you'd know of the song Nothing Can Change This Love by Cooke & know what I am talking about. If he can be that influenced to blatantly use Sam's style throughout his career, how do I personally not use the style Perry gave me as a singer...espcially for Journey! Food for thought or fuel for fire...GO!
This is absolutely TRUE! I remember attending the Steve Smith Drum Clinic a few years back and for part of his clinic, he talked about the evolution of music and how drumming styles have changed, etc. (it was actually pretty interesting how it all came about). During the talk, he also played snippets of music from a variety of musicians and singers which represented different eras of music. What was absolutely amazing was when he used a snippet from the Sam Cooke song listed in JSS's comment! We all stopped and looked at each other and went "Lovin', Touchin' Squeezin'!" Smith just had this crooked smile on his face. THEN he played the snippet from LTS as if to underscore the point (and said something to the effect, "Yeah, there were some strange things going on in Journey then.")
Funny the times I've heard Herbie or Ross complain about Kansas stealing Journey's licks for a song, but Perry did it for LTS. He didn't even change it (except the words). Cracked me up!
JSS, on a different note, I don't think you sound like or are trying to imitate Perry. The only time I've really heard you sound like Perry was on the SS CD, and you commented yourself about how weird that was, as if you were channelling Perry. You definitely have your own sound. Whether or not you "fit" with Journey, from what I've seen you do a great job at fronting the band.
