I can't believe that guy ripped off Perry like that

Excellent stuff! I need to listen to some more of Mr. Cooke. You certainly can hear "Cookeisms" in Perry, can'tcha? Don't blame him one bit, either.

Not one of Sam's most vocally challenging numbers, but the music and his presentation are simply stunning. Several lines in the beginning of the song could'vr been Sam or Steve...they were that close. Perry really should do a Cooke tribute album. Hell, he said Sam's family said he was one of the only people they would even consider.

Hey JSS, Don't let these guys goat you so much, they would argue that black is white. Just run with what ya got and man have a good time! Believe it or not you are making Journey history, bringing the band back, from a low spot.

Thanks for the link Jeff. You only have to listen to Steve sing Goodtimes or to know he was all about Sam Cooke but didn't actually imitate him. Like you do Steve's music justice and respect, but not imitate him.

The trouble with Sam Cooke is, he makes it seem so simple, I'd bet that song is more vocally challenging than you'd think :!:

VERY true. I'm going to listen to it again. Perry was great at making songs seem simple. Patiently immediately comes to mind.

First of all, I would rather you try to sound like Perry because that's the Journey I fell in love with. I never thought Augeri sounded much like Perry but the music was the Journey sound... as I said in another thread I'm afraid Journey will pull toward SS material with you and Neal in it together and I don't want that... please DO sound like Perry if it's what keeps Journey sounding like Journey. Just my personal preference.

I have ZERO problem with a Journey singer emulating Perry. It bothers other people, I know, but it's fine with me. What I usually have a problem with is when Perry diehards (or anyone else) claim that Augeri was a "clone" and you are not, even though I think you both have your share of Perryisms... you moreso than him from what I have heard and seen.

Now to play devil's advocate - if Sam Cooke had been in a band and Steve Perry replaced him and sounded like Sam, that would be the same issue of "cloning"... otherwise it is just his "influence." Steve Perry did not replace Sam Cooke nor did he sing Sam Cooke's songs for a living. If he had, that would have been a different comparison.

Here's where I have trouble understanding - You'll get no argument that if anyone that went out and called themselves Steve Perry and held a concert singing "Oh Sherrie" and "Lights" and "Missing You," then yes, they are being the impersonator you accuse them of being.

Here's the problem - Sam Cooke wasn't in a band (aside from Soul Stirrers), he was Sam Cooke, singing Sam Cooke songs (some of which he wrote, some he didn't). Steve Perry didn't need to replace Sam Cooke, because you can't take over the identity of a person and sing their songs! Steve Augeri and Jeff Scott Soto didn't join Steve Perry, they joined JOURNEY, and they are performing Journey songs.

For example, what if it were Gwen Stefani going out and singing Madonna songs, or Justin Timberlake going out and performing only Michael Jackson songs. Of course, these 2 singers were incredibly influenced by the aforementioned artists, but their influences were solo artists - If Madonna was in a band, and the band replaced her, the person who replaced her would be expected to sing the songs the way they were written and performed...And ideally, you would want someone who could pull that off as closely as possible.

Take AC/DC and Bon Scott. When Bon died, the band was faced with moving forward without a beloved and incredibly individual, unique, gifted, and charasmatic frontman. Was it the Bon Scott band? No, it was AC/DC. And they were blessed to find someone that could honor Bon's memory with the performance of his songs, but was Brian accused of being a Bon rip-off?

Anyway, the logic some use to claim that no one could ever perform "Journey" songs again without being a Perry clone is silly.

Thanks for the link.....never heard that one (very old school). I have Sam Cooke - The Man and His Music (cd of all his hits) and that isn't on it. I could soooo see you singing Chain Gang or Another Saturday Night. And I like Perry's rendition of Cupid and would like to hear him sing You Send Me. :)

Why?

New vocalist, new sound. Otherwise it's an imitation of the man. Like you, a tribute band to the Steve Perry Years.

You fucktards that are saying JSS is a Perry clone obviously have no natural ear for tonality or music in general. This guy is so different from any singer Journey has ever had and he had quite the following before SS. This guy has sung lots of music in many genres. Well, I haven’t heard him do any country, rap or opera yet but I bet he could. How many singers can you think of that can nail Queen and Journey and while doing so maintain their originality? HE does what is commonly called “Serving the song” meaning he does what needs to be done to make the song sounds as good as possible. The only thing he cops is some of the Perryisms in regards to how Perry pronounced certain words while singing. He does this because its absolutely necessary. As a singer I understand this and as clueless non musical morons some of you obviously do not. This guy can sing any genre and that I would place a large wager on. I bet he could nail some old blue eyes if he wanted to. That’s called being a musician not a clone. He is doing what needs to be done for the job. Stop shitbagging him for crying out loud. Ya know, I hope that Perry comes back so you assheads can hear all the songs a whole step down (that means E becomes D and its lower) not that you would notice anyway. Will you ever be happy ? If you want to hear Perry put the old fucking records on. I WAS part of the no one can replace Perry camp and JSS has convinced me to move on. The latest boots I have heard sound fucking wonderfull. Journey has new life and is a new band. Get over it.

You're kidding me right. Are you actually offended? like does anyone get offended when somebody says somthing about their band? it's not famlily or even close friends, I don't get it, sorry :)

Thanks Jeff for that song. Never heard that one before.
When I first started listening to Sam I heard "Cupid" and immediately got the connection and his influence on Steve Perry. He's my 2nd favorite singer of all time. I listen to him as much as Steve Perry.

And Jeremey I agree that "A Change Is Gonna Come" is his best song.

I think it would be a lot different if there was not all the acrimony surrounding the whole Journey thing, with the band going on without Perry/Perry quitting (take your pick), etc.

When I hear Cooke, I hear Perry and that's only because I heard Perry first. :) Sam is great! When you hear Perry sing, it's very obvious that he was influenced by Cooke. Nothing wrong with that.

I remember seeing AC/DC on their first tour after the death of Bon Scott and thinking 'Wow, how did they find a singer who sounds EXACTLY like Scott?'. In those days, his singing voice was very similar and of course he was singing only songs recorded by AC/DC while Scott was in the band. Now they have recorded many more songs with Brian Johnson than they did with Bon Scott, and he has made those songs his own so the comparisons are no longer valid.

I recently heard JSS singing 'Cryin' (the Aerosmith song), and while it's unmistakably Jeff singing, it sounds so much like Steve Tyler because that's the way the song was intended and Jeff has stayed true to that. On another of his covers, Rainbow's 'Gates of Babylon' Jeff sings it very much like Ronnie James Dio, again because that's the treatment it requires. If you sing Journey material (at least if you sing it with a quality voice) it will naturally sound like Journey, but it doesn't mean that the singer is a clone of the original artist.

If and when Jeff records new material with Journey, it will be Jeff's vocals and songwriting added to the mix, which will make the songs his own. I just hope the band then plays any new material live more than they seemed to with Augeri era material, because then the 'clone' accusations will get completely blown away.

Pick yourself up a copy of Sam Cooke at the Copa, and listen to his cover of Dylan's Blowin' In the Wind, you'll enjoy it.

By the way everyone, I'm not in on this he sounds like shit. Through my wife I've been introduced to a whole new type of Music.....it's not total Rock for me anymore....60's music is on the agenda...no more arguing over the who plays what in the car. I'm off to take a listen to her other favourite Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers..the track she plays all the time is Silhouettes....seriously this is great music..

During that slow dance last night we accidently fell on the bed...now I'm gonna play that tune at the end of each night 8)
