Glad to see guys like Fred, Deano, Carl, etc. diggin' the voice. I've always said it isn't so much the range that he has, but the way he can emote a song like no one else. I think that is why I am so diggin Jeff's voice.......no, he may not have Perry's range.....but I definately hear some of that Perry passion/fire in his voice on the Journey stuff. Perry is not a "god" to me, he's just never been matched in the delivery of a song (or the tone/texture he sings a song in), by anyone else in the last 30 years IMO.

Even my wife finds Perry to be a big nosed fag. Ask her tomorrow. He emotes gayness and making Journey a girl band more than anything else.

Good for her, AR.

Schon hates it.

I like "Message of Love" That's it. End of stop. Rest of it is awful.

Truer words have never been spoken! Great read, thank you for posting it! :D

Columbia Reissues
Steve Perry

If emotions are a language that can be converted into sound, they’re translated articulately and eloquently by Steve Perry. He is, quite simply, a master of musical interpretation. And every note is wrenched from him with such passion and conviction that there’s little doubt life has often driven a stiletto heel straight through his heart. Even his upbeat vocals are tinged with a wistfulness that suggests hard-won happiness.Yes, Steve Perry can carry a tune — the way power lines carry high voltage. The expanded reissues of Perry’s solo ventures — Street Talk, For The Love Of Strange Medicine, and Greatest Hits — strip away the insulation and lay bare the voltage that jolted Journey into a global superpower after he joined. And exposed a talent that thrived beyond the boundaries of any band.

Perry’s self-produced solo debut, 1984’s upbeat, poppy Street Talk hit the pavement after the release of Journey’s Frontiers album. Backed by a band as tight as a vacuum-packed jar, Perry co-wrote all the material, including chart-chargers “Oh Sherrie” and “Foolish Heart.” There’s also the bright synth-rock of “It’s Only Love,” the catchy, buoyant “Strung Out” and “Running Alone,” whose sweeping majesty showcases Perry at his emotive best. The five bonus tracks are some of the album’s standouts, like the rollicking rocker “Makes No Difference,” displaying Perry hitting a stratospheric high note;“Harmony,” in which his crooning tenderly caresses the delicate accompaniment; and the tangy, horn-honking Motown groove of “Don’t Tell Me Why You’re Leaving.”

For The Love Of Strange Medicine, in contrast, sighs with longing and aching poignancy. It’s replete with ballads, but that’s not a criticism — Perry quite stylishly wears his heart on his sleeve. And Lincoln Brewster’s compatibly stunning, wailing blues guitar seems to sympathize. Together, they perform a synchronized, graceful dance on bittersweet ballads like “I Am,” “Donna Please” and “One More Time,” as well as the funky, animated harmonica-and-syncopation-saturated “Friends of Mine.”

As for Greatest Hits, it should instead have been titled The Comprehensive Steve Perry. Hardly a bunch of filler, it’s a meaty collection of hits, demos and previously unreleased material flaunting a voice that could powerfully and ardently sing about aluminum siding, lint or crabgrass. Heck, he could probably even sing with a chorus of angels. And upstage them.

Fair enough. I do agree with NS on the TBF thing though. Just boring. Message of Love was the one tune that was a halfway rocker. The one Niggy sent me that didn't make the CD was cool too.

To Be Alive Again blows EVERYTHING off of TBF away. THAT sounds like Journey - an actual rock song - go figure. Ditto "Signs of Life" - it actually showed some life.

Structually it is ok. Real men do not croon that horseshit though. Makes Open Arms sound like thrash metal. Real guys hate shit like WYLAW. Fake fantasy bullshit. Not so much that it is a ballad, but lyrically it is stupid. Dumb fat girls that get dumped in white trash bowling alleys by abusive husbands wish for that kind of crap. Makes Journey seem lame.

Just the facts.

All that really matters is if the fans love the cd. And had it not been for Mr P there would NOT have been a journey. Say what you i do NOT give a fig.

Yes - unlike the caveman thunder of "Arrival"....

I love all this macho big talk about "real men" and so on and so forth.

Face AR - Journey are a girly rock band...and have been since 1978.

Any Metallica fan would laugh at your sappy record collection...so be honest and admit you're just a sensitive romantic who's in touch with his feminine side. :)

Metallica are a bunch of pansies that need psychiatrists to go on tour with them Go see that documentary about them if you haven't.

I got 8 inches of a feminine side you can suck. You can even play a piece of crap tune off of FLTOSM while you're doing it.

Here is my "sappy" record collection:

AR may just be the best looking guy on this board but imo, he doesn't really realize what Journey was about and what the people expect from the band because of it's history.

The women gave the band a life of it's own and you can't change that, imo.

That's so true HOTS....

I remember that scene from the BTM documentary when Neal Schon recalled looking at the audience soon after Perry joined and being amazed and delighted that the vast majority were women.

Whereas the pre-Perry line-up played to a small gathering of nerdy guys...

I know! They came close at one point to sending the film crew home though didn't they?

Have you seen the DVD extras? Worth it for Lars' spectacular tantrum when he realises no-one has told him about the Hawaiian shirt theme at Kirk's birthday pary...

Nope. Is it any good?

It's great AR. It's about the bitter rivalry between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols. I'm not a fan of either band...but my god....BJM are UNBELIEVABLY fucked up...and keep blowing every opportunity that comes their way...such as beating the crap out of each other onstage at an industry showcase just as a record exec is about to offer them a million dollars...

So many classic scenes. Worth renting if you ever get the chance.

I'm married and no, not jealous. Never had any trouble in the "getting women to drop their panties" department.

For the record, Mrs. AR is laughing and just said the only thing attractive about SP is his wallet. Typical. LOL
