I agree with you 100%. It is a shame the way Kath died, what a waste of awesome talent.

Just a joke, obviously.

Although Fingers' solo in "We're Not Gonna Take It" is legendary.

Its one thing to say Neal is the best, because youre a Journey fan, which I do respect everyones personal opinions, but if everyone would try to be more 'neutral' , maybe he isnt the best guitar player ,,,
I do love his sound, his speed and also his PRESENCE and FEELING when he plays a solo....

I guess what I am tryin to say is he would be No 1 in my list if he could combine all that he's got with a little bit of this:

Big J put in writing my feelings exactly--recognizing Neal's playing and how his music stands the test of time... Love that!!

As far as my favorite guitarists go - Neal is A#1. But there is no true best guitarist out there. There are too many different styles of music, technique, etc to ever declare the "best" guitarist. How heavily do we weigh, clean playing, song writing, tone, success, etc. Just too many variables.

I mean you have Hendrix with psychedelic rock, you have Neal, EVH, Michael Schenker (etc.) with standard Rock, there is SRV with the blues, Malmsteen doing neo-classical rock, Hammet doing thrash/speed metal, Holdsworth & Di Meola doing jazz fusion, guys like George Lynch or Randy Rhodes doing "hair" metal (always hated that term). Then there were the guys in the late 60s and early 70s that did not have the technology that is there today, but could shred anyway (Frank Marino comes to mind). And, these are just a few names in each genre off the top of my head, there are many, many more incredible players.

It does make for great discussion, but there is no true best.

McNeil, for once I agree with you. This is exactly what makes Neil great. There are many other supposed great guitarists that could take a lesson from his melodic ability. Ironically, Neil would like to shred more even though his greatest asset is his melodic ability.

I've got to go with this one too. I care nothing about hearing someone shred, all rock guitarists do that and they all sound pretty much the same to me. It's Neal's melodic work that makes him great. It's like he said, his guitar was an extension of Perry's voice. Now it can be an extension of Jeff's.

I was wondering: If Neal can't read/write music (I think I read this somewhere on this board), how does he compose? Also, how does he know how to follow other people's compositions? Has anyone ever heard him play something classical (as in Mozart, or whoever)... I hope this isn't too dumb a question--I love music, but am clueless about technical stuff... You guy's knowledge is astounding!!
