The way I see it. Singers are going lip a song even a concert at some point in their career. Take a look at half the apparently LIVE MTV shows over the years and check the ever great American show "Solid Gold", now check back and see how many current artists lipped through their sets - hundreds, all of them. Michael Jackson, Whitney Houson, and yes probably even Brian Adams. I have not lost respect for "JOURNEY" on making their decisions, it's a team effort. I am sure anyone part of the music scene or has been involved in the industry understands. It's not Steve Augeri could never sing to begin with.

Going back to the topic at hand...

I guess I'm a Loco looney. That is to say- I was brought to Journey dudring Perry's tenure, saw them a few times back then. Loved them, loved the music!

Flash to 1998- saw them with Augeri and I'm sorry- he just didn't do it for me. I was ok with him stepping in, hell, I was just glad to see Journey out and playing again! But he just didn't "hit" with me. My personal opinion only. No bad feelings about him. But to me- no energy from the band ( at least the show I saw)

Jump to 2006. Heard about them touring with DL (my fav band- truth's out- sorry!) And I thought to give Steve another chance. Perhaps he'd go over better with me now. ( bear in mind, I had purchased my tickets back BEFORE the lead singer switch and "tapegate") So I again went to the show with an open mind.

All I could say to my friend after the first few songs was " THEY'RE BACK!!!!!!"

And I am back to the Journey fold.

I heard very little Journey in the 80's. They got very little airplay here in the UK, other than on 'pop' radio stations (which I avoided in the 80's) and they refused to play live here. I suppose the few tracks I may have heard (and the supporting incredibly bad videos!) were probably from the ROR period.

Let me clarify. No I have never seen Perry live - he refused to tour this part of the world, remember? - and until the recent Houston DVD I'd not really heard a good recording of him live. I discount boots because to my ears they sound crap whoever is singing on them.

On album recordings, whilst I fully acknowledge SP's ability, I always found his voice TOO powerful (or at least too high in the mix), to the extent that all the other instruments were pushed into the background. When it comes to rock music, I am a fan of the music and the melody rather than just the voice. Augeri's voice, because it was not as powerful as Perry's, allowed the rest of the music to come to the fore. Therefore, while it may not have been as perfect as Perry, it made for a more rounded overall sound. I don't expect anybody to agree with that. Its just a personal preference. And it has nothing to do with nationality.

Now the interesting thing will be if and when JSS records with Journey. His voice is on a par with Perry when it comes to power, but so far on all the recordings of his I've heard it doesn't 'overpower' the music.
