Put the fuckin ass biting critics ( froy, McNeil, Aaron and that big bitch Monker)flat on their backs.

How long since a band put out a double album, or double disc?

Yeah, write 20-25 songs, and throw them ALL onto a set of double discs and produce it right this time. Put it in stores. Sell it for only 12 -13 bucks. Give the consumer a bargain. Make an attractive sleeve/cover. Announce your return with authority. Take a cue from your new lead singer and go for the knockout punch. No more freebie giveaway garbage. Sell the fucking thing..I mean sell the Goddamned thing and put a product out there that is unconventional, yet awe inspiring.

If the double disc doesn't ring a bell in your collective domes, copy a page from Springsteen and release two separate discs on the same day. Just make some fucking noise.

I KNOW you have in the can enough for this to happen.

I think that is a great idea Deano! Both the double disc and the Springsteen idea....

Dean, great Ideas...

I got a PM about your thread and was asked to re-post my ideas from awhile back, just adding to your thoughts here...
Let me know what you think :)

I'll fall back on my Does and Don'ts I posted in that thread of the same title last month:

DO:
1. Hire on a solid producer (Rick Rubin, Scott Humphreys, Terry Brown, Roy Thomas Baker) and keep Kev Elson on as engineer.

2. Get into a classic, "All Analog" studio and let Elson get that ESCAPE/FRONTIERS era sound back. Get away from the digital realm! Its too crisp and unfeeling. Get back to the tru warmth of Analog tape, real tube amped guitar tones, tape-delay echos, old style reverbs...

3. TAKE YOUR TIME AND COLLECTIVELY WRITE SOLID MATERIAL! Don't rush and throw together a bunch of unused and rehashed material like you did with GENERATIONS. Take FULL advantage od Jeff's writing skills and spend 3-6 months really working strong material.

4. It worked great with Perry/Rolie - try at least one track with Jeff/Friga sharing vocals and harmonies

5. Stick with the "One Word" album title, have Mouse do some killer oil-painted artwork (again, get away from the digital realm, it is stale and boring... Unless you let Christopher do it!), and then get out on the road, ALONE, and showcase the hell out of that new material!

6. There's 4 races left... DO A NASCAR WEEKEND!!! The band plays 1-2 songs pre-race, Neal SHREDS the SSB and let Jeff SCREAM those 3 famous words!!!

DON'T:
1. Don't worry about writing 'a hit' or 'monster ballad', i.e. Don't try to force the magic. Let it all come natural.

2. Do not EVER let Ross sing lead again!

3. Do not do another double-bill, greatest hits, nostalgia tour. Go out on your own and 'ram the new material down our throats!"

4. Don't lose faith in your fans - write and release the music that is in your hearts... Chances are, what you come up with will blow us ALL away and then some

Hey Carlita & Deanie,

Rush could do this but not Journey, single album release and slowly does it..let's be realistic here. As for, release music from your heart...fuckin' hell!! Perry might get away with that line of thought but not the new line up, it's heavy shit and the heart ain't part of it and as for a monster ballad....fuck you. that's the first thing most of us look for on an album, then we pretend to like the more obscure tracks to make us look cool, let it all come out natural...what the fuck is all this shit

I think Carl's ideas are good...maybe put a little something on there for the ladies too though okay?

1. more pics. in the inside cause women are visual too  we need to see who this person is singing to us-that's a joke....sort of..
2. make it available at places WE shop, no biggie for me to run to the music store, but for some its way out of the way and may not even hear about it til much later.
3. women love ballads
4. get a well known artist to release something with you=get people's attention
5. ADVERTISE on t.v. on the circuit to get your name out there like other corporate bands do=Ellen DeGeneneres, Jay Leno, those types of things.
Sex sells and JSS is totally sexy=use it

Hey Styxie, Chill... And it's Carl, not Carlita or Carla or Nancy...

They were just ideas...
But I NEVER said "Don't write Monster Ballads".
So Fuck You back!
Re-read what I said before you blast me...

"Don't worry about writing 'a hit' or 'monster ballad', i.e. Don't try to force the magic. Let it all come natural.

Trying too hard makes for poor results; let it all come naturally...
With Cain in the writing mode, along with Jeff, there is sure to be a Monster Ballad or 2.
You were missing my point but no biggie.
I never assumed everyone would agree with these ideas; I just p[osted them for fun.

Sorry Carl (ie)

you fuckin' called me Styxie read back

I apologise but let's face it only Perry in the line up could pull this one off...I've probably misread again, but a bottle of wine and a few beers who gives a fuck! Sorry Carl..I mean it dude, sorry. I know they'll produce a ballad on the next album of 12 songs but come on it ain't gonna be a classic, that's long past..it'll be a ballad like an REO current one, once heard forgotten

About the ballad thing...I'm a woman and I really would prefer an album heavy on the rock and light on the ballads or at least balanced heavily toward rock. Please limit the amount of hearts and flowers. I want a few songs that appeal to baser emotions too.

Something like Stone In Love appeals to me, even Homemade Love has a place.

Get a little nasty. Have some fun.

Many of us fans are 40+. But we're not ready for a damn rocking chair. Rock the music.

If you want a knockout punch, put 10-12 really good songs on a cd. You need quality over quantity.

To use the favorite song of the board, you could put out 30 Butterfly's on a cd, and you guys still wouldn't be happy. Strong material, and don't rush it. Of course, sales dependent on radio actually playing anything Journey without the words "Steve Perry" attached to it, which is nil to nothing. JSS means the same thing as Steve Augeri as far as name recognition in the US. Regardless of the following he has on this board, or the following of Talisman in Europe, he is still an unknown to the general US population.

On the subject of monetary gain for the band though, if the price of Generations was factored into the price of the concert ticket (which it should have been), the band made more $$$ off that cd than they did off Arrival--and probably more than TBF. Personally, pricing the new cd in with the concert ticket is genius and I'm surprised it took this long for someone to think it up.

Sure why not put out a quadruple disc take 5 years to write it and get back to us when its done
Great idea Dean.

Just 10 great songs will do it... no need for a double album.... but agreed,,, no short cuts..a solidly produced album by a recognised quality rock producer is the answer...no "home produced" crap will do this time around!
