"...This is Our Country".

Excuse me while I step up onto my Soapbox:

I saw a commerical tonight, w/ the very talented (imo) singer/songwriter John Mellencamp....y'know, the guy who had big hits in the 80s..."Hurts So Good"; "Walls Come Tumblin' Down"; "Cherry Bomb"; etc...

...very Americana; spoke for the "Everyman"...

...and NOW he speaks for CHEVY TRUCKS??

WTF...

Ageism is alive and well in this country....no wonder Steve P. (or anyone ELSE, for that matter) does not WANT to venture out to do anything "Label - related".

I'm sorry - but I'll take JM's "Our Country" over ANY effing Rockin' Barbie thing any time; any day...

Thoughts?

Ya know, I heard that song. I was flipping the channels and passed CMT. I thought it was a video and I actually was thinking "WOW, this is a great song for Mellencamp!" then.... BAM! BAM! it's about trucks. I was majorly dissapointed and I'm not even a big Mellencamp fan, I just liked some of his older stuff.

The Scarecrow album was SUCH a good record and the guy needs to get back to that. Lose the fiddles, the autoharp and the rappers and get back to the rock.

Hey, if that's what it take's to get the song heard, more power to him, IMO. A bigger audience through a commercial for the message of the song. Good tune. 8)

I agree...shouldn't have to be through a commercial. Just saying everyone watch's too much TV, so it's a way.

I agree brywool, I saw him last year when he was touring with John Fogerty and he was great......still put on a good show.....also agree he should get back to more of the rock......I don't like his newer stuff as much.

exactly... I can see why chevy used John as he is Midwesterner---and that is what chevy is --a midwestern business...but loved Seger's song better....as it was a song before the commercial and like a rock made it seemed that chevy trucks were STRONG/TOUGH and long lasting...

Here is what John says about it....he's got a point:

John Mellencamp has embraced a new way to get his music out to his audience, with his new song "Our Country." It's featured in commercials for Chevrolet, and the ads are being shown during the World Series and football games, among other programming. Mellencamp said that having music in commercials is probably the best way for he and his peers to let people know what they're up to: "I think it's the new way of artists such as myself reaching people, you know? 'Cause they're not gonna play me on Top 40 radio ever again -- I mean, Tom Petty just made a great record, and nobody heard it. So I think it's what people are gonna have to do if they want people to hear their music -- if you're not, you know, 21 years old."

Mellencamp is genius. He and his band think OUTSIDE the Box. Journey needs to follw this very successful template.

Remember last year, Bryan Adams had Open Road on ESPN. Helped his effort go double platinum.

I generally don't care for the idea of artists pushing products with good songs. It can really ruin a good song, in my opinion. This one has the potential to do just that. "Our Country" is a great tune but it runs the risk of everyone thinking of Chevy instead of what the song is intended to be about every time you hear it.

At least it is supporting an American product, though.

Exactly. Like Mellencamp said above, you've got to do what it takes to get the music heard and let people know you're still around. Then the new songs will also be recognizable to concert audiences.

I like the song, but hate seeing the commercial every 20-30 minutes. He didn't exactly do much for me during the world series either, for whatever reason he waited 10 minutes or so to come out, after being introduced. Then again, I'm not a Chevy guy either.

I liked and still do, Taylor Hicks music that he did during and much longer before Am. Idol, but seeing the Ford commercials with him, got old after they aired 8-10 times during a baseball game. I am a Ford guy, but that even turned me off a little bit from them.

Sometimes repetition isn't always a good thing. For product or pitch man.
