VH Touring w/DLR, w/o Mad Anthony!?

Any bit of news in the Van Halen world is usually good, but I have mixed emotions on this one. It's been discussed before whether a Roth-fronted VH would provide a good show. And, if they tour without Michael Anthony, will it still be VH as we've known it (no, of course)?

That part sticks out to me more than anything else.

No new release? That really sucks. I think VH would have a much better chance of releasing a kick ass album than having a kick ass tour. They were hit and miss in their prime. How will they be 20-some years later?

I wonder how much tickets will be? A shitload, I'm guessing.


I predict this tour (if it does indeed happen) will be a MAJOR train wreck. But...that's just me. This should have happened 10 years ago.

If, in fact, this tour happens...I'd be really surprised if Mikey isn't there. Eddie is just trying to punish him. He's pissed because after all those years in VH, Mike never farted without the "brothers" permission. Now, he's been out playing with Sammy...thus proving that he doesn't need Eddie and Alex to have a job...and it burns Eddie's ass.

I think Mike will be there.

A friend of mine was really good friends with him, and also a really close friend of mine. He's called him over the past few months, and he told me he's just over the deep end. He bought a porn company, he's doing porno soundtracks for porn movies, he's with a very different bunch of people now. That tour with Sammy... I talked with Sammy when I was in Cabo a few months ago, and he said that Eddie was just impossible. Totally impossible to get along with. It's a shame, because he's such a great guitar player, and they're a cool band.

This cannot be billed as the original VH without Anthony,plus Roth needs him as a back up singer! I think mngt will argue the point of Anthony needing to be in for it to be a proper reunion.How in hell can Eddie want to tour with Roth who he has real issues with and not Anthony.This tour will be just a big money maker and the fans will love it see you there!

Agree, I think the cooler heads of the suits will prevail....as had been suggested above, too, praps it's just the brothers posturing to publicly punish mad anthony a little bit but knowing full well it can't be pulled off to full effect w/out him.


Also, I need a new record....the direction they were GOING in w/ DLR in '96 w/ Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More was amazing. Those 2 songs are spectacular, better than the newbies in '04 w/ Sam.

As I said above...I think VH have a MUCH better chance of putting out an new ass kickin' album with Roth, as opposed to just a tour. Their live show with Roth was always hit and miss...and I can't see that this time will be any different. Hopefully, the tapes will be rolling when they hit the stage. A DVD would be cool. Or embarassing. Too early to tell.

Here's what I've got:

David Lee Roth appears to be back in the Van Halen fold. The band is said to be plotting a tour with Roth for next year, which would mark their first run of dates together since 1984. There have been a lot of rumors over the years about a Roth-Van Halen reunion, but a source close to the situation reports that it looks very good for the tour. Roth called it inevitable on more than one occasion this year, and Eddie Van Halen told Howard Stern last month that he could see it happening. If it all comes together, the question of a bass player will have to be addressed, since Eddie and Michael Anthony are on the outs.

Before the news of this potential reunion broke, Roth said he would love to do it: "I'd certainly salute that, and I'm very proud of this material. And while everybody's vertical and mobile, hope springs eternal -- great name for a stripper, huh?"

It's worth noting that the Van Halen website hasn't been updated since February 2005, and Sammy Hagar is still in the band photo. Also, there's no mention of a reunion on the Roth and Anthony sites.
Roth has a few dates booked in November, but nothing after that.

They were darker, heavier, more complex sorta then the old days.... New songs like that along w/ the classics would be great live.

Even though I am in the minority, being a Van Hagar fan, I would love to see that tour, with Mikey or Wolfie playing bass. I friggin loved "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't Get This Stuff No More". I loved the 2004 tour that hit Philly, although as drunk as I was, I probably remember more than Eddie. If he could possibly keep it together, it could be great! A studio album would be more than can be expected, though. Can you imagine if they pulled it off?

Although I'm a Hagar era fan moreso than Roth, this is great news. I agree with most that without Anthony what's the point. I would like to think that if the suits don't insist on Anthony's involvment then Roth would take the lead and insist on Anthony being there! Hopefully Roth can see beyond the $ and ensure that it is the 'band' that re-unite. Would be worth seeing this live but I would be concerned whether Roth could cut it vocally. Some damn hard vocal preperation should be underway immediately...

Just so that everyone can pay beaucoup dolluhz for their tix, get there, and realize DLR can't sing wortha shit these days and that most of his vocals are probably a DAT.

Fair Warning is my fave VH album, but Sammy's the real singer. I just wish 5150 had the same sound as 1984. Alex's drums on 5150 sounds like shit. Same goes for Mike's bass.

I don't know Sammy personally, either. But, I have followed his career since the beginning. And I think you're right on...he would tell Mike that he needs to be there. Sammy is a pro, he's cool, and about as laid back as a person could be. I don't see him being pissed about any of this. Actually...unfortunately probably, this tour will just prove that Sammy is indeed the better performer on stage.

Absoulutely...in fact from recent interviews Sammy'd be the first one to tell fuckin DAVE to go for it.
Hagar is so secure in his legacy and space in music that he's laid back about this stuff.

Yeah, I do agree with you guys. Sammy is mature too, a lot more mature than Eddie anyway. Sams been around longer than VHs career anyway, and is used to seeing musicians come and go.

No, I think not. While I cannot think of VH w/o M.A., Van Halen is Eddie and Alex. Everyone else was a hired gun, technically. Eddie has stated to guitar industry friends of mine that he will not set foot on stage with Sammy and Michael again. They had no right to market themselves as the other half, or sell hot sauce or booze by using their fame aquired by playing in Van Halen. That's his opinion.
The big reasons he is setting foot on stage with Roth is in the double digit millions.

No, I think it will show Sammy is the better singer, songwriter, guitarist, performer. Dave is a one trick poney that is as fun to watch now as a 50 year-old, wearing a leasure suit with airplane collars, hitting on 18 year-olds at the mall.

Just relaying the man's words. Money changes people's minds, as it did to tour with Sammy and Michael last time. I am sure DLR will be a short lived thing too.

As for "who" or "what" is Van Halen, I am refering to the business aspect, not the creative aspect. As verified by my contact, as well as Sammy and Mike in several recent interviews, everyone but Al and Ed are hired guns. Nobody else can claim the band name Van Halen.

To me, I can easily accept two versions of VH (DLR and Sammy). The Gary era was a bad dream. It is going to be really hard for the public to accept anything other than those. It will especially be hard for either of those to come back without Mike, as he was a key to the sound. However, they could haul a ProTools rig out, have Alex play to a click track, and mix Mike's vocals in.
