Believe in Me vs. Higher Place

Postby SF-Dano » Tue Nov 07, 2006 10:12 am

Just listened to Believe in Me for the first time. I like the song alot and it grabbed me right away. But, I felt the same way when I first heard Higher Place. I am wondering why some here believe a tune like Believe in Me from a JSS fronted Journey would do better as far as success and receiving airplay than say Higher Place did?

Now, remember I like both songs alot. I am just curious to hear the opinions of those really high on the JSS bandwagon.

personally, I wouldn't want a song like either of those listed above, from a JSS fronted Journey. I'm ok with a few ballads, but in the immortal words of Dee Snider and Twisted Sister... I Wanna Rock!

I wouldn't consider either of those tunes ballads, if that is what your implying. They're definately not heavy hard hitting rockers, but I wouldn't call them slow or ballad like. Standard up-tempo Journey style rock is what is sounds like to me.

erm... what u both on about

Higher Place is one of the rockiest Journey tracks!! up there with Seperate Ways!!

It is an explosive track...hence its "opener" status on the disc!

I think sometimes we all listen to completely different things in the same song!!

Beats the hell outta me, about higher place and ballad, I dunno what I was thinking, but it's not a hard rocker, for sure. Believe in me, not such a rocker in my mind really, just a harder ballad type of song. Then again, I might just be thinking deep inside my well medicated head right now, that I don't care to hear anymore Augeri type songs.

Thank God for Tylenol with Codine.

I think that both those songs are great and if radio wasn't all payola'd to death, they'd both be high charting singles.

Absolutely. "Higher Place" is/was definitely a great song for radio. Too damn bad.

Another agreement here.
HP, to me, is what 'classic-sounding' Journey is all about; That fuckin' song
grabs you by the throat as soon as it kicks in.

Believe In Me... I said in another thread,

"Hell, how many of you out there are like me and could
easily see Jeff's solo tune "Believe In Me" re-recorded by the band, with some melodies and riffs from Jon and The Whale added in, as a cut/single on a new Journey album???
That song already has a great classic-Journey feel!
Add in some even bigger harmonies from Jeff, Deen, Neal and Jon and, HOLY SHIT!,
INSTANT AOR Classic!!!"

Good question, I really like both tunes too.......don't know the answer to that, I don't necessarily think Believe in Me would get anymore airplay than Higher Place.

I don't actually like "Higher Place". It's got a catchy chorus, I guess...but the verse is weak....and overall the performance of the song feels leaden and soulless to me.

But "Believe In Me" is uplifting...it has a real passion and 'edge' about it...and JSS sounds like he's pushing himself much harder than Augeri ever did.

This is all totally subjective, of course. There's probably not a huge difference in quality re: the song-writing...but
but the superior delivery and production and 'vibe' on "Believe In Me" makes me think it would be received more enthusastically by 'classic Journey' fans than "Higher Place" ever was.

Would it be a hit if it was released as a Journey single? I doubt it...but it might be able to create a buzz about the album in the industry and amongst the fan base.

"Higher Place" was the song that gave me chills down my spine when I first heard it because I knew Journey was back. It has the classic Journey sound. Good tune but I like "Believe in Me" even better.

Hell- I'd be a "happy camper" if they did either song, quite frankly 8)

Well IMO I'm not so sure, here in Orlando anyway, that new Journey stuff would make it on the radio either way, the stations here suck.

I love "Believe in Me" over "Higher Place" though, but keep in mind I'm a diehard JSS fan.

I am wondering if there could be some push to get new Journey music on XM or Sirius. Seems they would fit nicely on few of the different channels on there. The whole satelite radio thing is really taking off here in California. I am considering it for my vehichles soon, as it is much better than the regular radio stations I have around my area. Not sure who mangement would have to meet with or whose palms they would have to grease to get some new Journey tunes played on there.

I can't live w/o my XM in my Car!!!
I am a sports-talk-radio junky!
Mike&Mike in the Morning, Colin Cowherd, Dan Patrick, First Team On Fox, the Sportsbash, Hockey Night...

I do recall SS being played on The Boneyard back when it came out...
FM radio is a wasteland of paid-off companies playing what they are told to play...
Satellite Radio is DEFINITELY the way to go :)

I'm with you on XM Carlitto, I mostly listen to "America Right" and "Big Tracks" but do you notice how crappy the sound is? At least in my trailblazer the signal has this high end buzz to it, and doesn't even sound as good as the local stations. Do you hear the same thing? Just wonderin'

Yup.. Melissa is right. The stations around Central Fla do suck! It consists of Country, crap called music (rap/pop), 80's music (which is fine by me), and the "new" hard rock. It's great that Journey does get some radio play here but the only place I tend to hear them is on the 80s station which consists of nothing but their hits from the 80s. I would LOVE to say that they would get radio play here but I have to yet find a decent station that would do it here.

hmm.. to pick one of them tho I would say "Believe in Me". I love Jeff's vocals in it, it's very catchy! I can say that "Higher Place" is one of favorites too tho. The band sounds so tight in it.

Hey are you able to pick up that Tampa station that plays Journey all the time? We can sometimes, usually in our cars, except near downtown Orlando where I guess there's just too much interference.
