Journey should hire Doc McGhee

Postby AR » Thu Nov 16, 2006 3:20 pm

Doc McGhee has managed the careers of a diverse group of artists including James Brown, Mink DeVille, Scorpions and Diana Ross. He founded the careers of Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Skid Row and reunited KISS for their '96-'97 Alive Worldwide Tour (the highest grossing tour of the year). Collectively, his artist have sold over 250 million albums.

I have always been impressed by Journey the band, but not by recent management. Can Azoff and give Doc a call.

Just a late night thought. Perhaps their hands are tied in the matter. I have no idea, but I'd like to see someone else captain the ship.

Journey could use some good exposure and some merchandising wouldn't hurt.

Doc could fit the bill. ANYBODY could fit the bill, except who's in charge now. Yeah, I'd vote for Doc.

AR,

That is not a bad thought. I'd say gramps hasn't done much for Journey in the last decade. Doc could give them a shot in the arm and isn't too big for his fuckin britches. It could work.

Aaron

this reminds me of journey mgt today.. the band is fortunate enough to still have die hard "thirsty" fans peppered out there and they get very little, just causes a bunch of division...

Wasn't McGhee also a big league drug trafficker or money launderer? I remember there was something almost impressively dodgy about him.....

8) If they change management, which they should imo they should bring Herbie back. Herbie is the one that made them big and Journey are the ones that made Herbie big. Herbie belongs to Journey and Journey belong to Herbie.

Andrew - I am glad to hear that. I hope they SHOW it. The right publicity, etc. Would definitely be a shot in the arm for the band and their fans - casual, and not-so-casual (do we know any of those here??) ;)

All I know is that after the boom of the Kiss reunion tour faded, he's helped them keep their arena status even on their own for the last 10 years. 10 years that has included numerous lineup changes and the loss of original members.

He worked with VH1 on the "Supergroup" series which got Nugent, Sebastian Bach, Scott Ian, and Jason Bonham some exposure.

I could care less about past incarceration or drug history. It's the music business. Kiss wouldn't be working with him if he wasn't a pro.

I think there were reasons why Journey didn't get good PR this past 8 yrs. Live appearances were difficult & w/out those, it's tough to really promote a band. They have the right members in place right now. I think the coming yrs will see some changes for the better. Prepare to be excited.

I was trying to say that delicately. But yes. If u saw Augeri's live appearances during his tenure, well they were atrocious. For example: http://youtube.com/watch?v=w5ID_Y4lmdE Ouch.

I paid a lot of money and travelled a ton of miles over the past 8 years to hear the Juke box. Don't get me wrong, I had a blast and met a ton of great folks. It's ok. If we did not have SA we would not have Journey which means we would not now have JSS. The future is bright. :D

Well it wasn't always the jukebox. Although thinking back on 04 maybe it should have been.

Thank God for JSS. He soooo saved this tour & the future of Journey.

That's far from "atrocious"...I thought that was very cool actually.

I don't know much about managing a band but does seem strange that they would retain the current managment team after the fiasco of the past year or so... wether they are now firmly behind them or not. If they have not been up until this point then they should have been gone a long time ago & maybe this would all have been avoided. It would seem a fresh Journey should have a fresh team with a different managment style that is alittle more fan and media friendly.

That's the first time I've heard/seen that and I thought it was so beautiful that I favorited it... Steve's straining some but the music is just gorgeous; I was transfixed while watching it...

What? Have u heard Perry's version? Did u not hear Augeri mess up the lyrics badly? Did u not see him pull the mic away when he couldn't hit the notes? Did u not hear how flat he was in the beginning of the song? U have had ur hearing checked lately, right?

I would love to see Doc run the ship!

That stuff with him happened 20 + years ago.

From Wikipedia :

Doc McGhee has had a life filled with highs and lows. Aside from managing several successful musical acts, McGhee was "arrested on a charge of assisting to smuggle 40,000 lbs of marijuana into North Carolina from Colombia in 1982" and "has previously been busted for bringing a shipment of cocaine into the state of Louisiana." More recently, due to his multiple drug trafficking convictions , McGhee, in an effort to clean up his reputation, formed an anti-drugs foundation called "Make A Difference Foundation."
