FYI, an octave, if you're not musically inclined, is 12 WHOLE steps below or above it's original note. If it were an octave below, it would sound like Bowzer from Sha Na Na singing....come on now, a tad extreme, no?

What you're hearing is a fuller, bellowed voice than the originator (not a diss, just educating), Perry was thinner & softer in voice than I but my friend, the notes are EXACTLY what he sang, nothing lowered, nothing changed. A/B to the original, you'll hear no lowered keys, 'octave' changes or otherwise.

On a side note, your usage of the word octave makes me giggle in the same sense of the guitarists girlfriend/manager in Spinal Tap...in the movie when, she tried to use the word 'Dolby' by saying 'Dobly', very confident in her knowledge of music terminology, thanks for the laugh

Good for Jeff. He doesn't let them talk shit about which they know nothing about.

I'm not sure I liked him calling Perry's voice "thinner" tho. But I don't think he meant anything bad by that.

What is the correct term for the difference they're actually noticing in Jeff's voice? Deeper timbre? Is that right?

That's how I took it- Steve P. was a "pure" tenor ( that's what we called it in choir, anyway!). Jeff's voice is a bit deeper, but not enough that he can't hit the high notes.

Sis, I don't know the correct vocal terms, maybe Nora can help with that, but I equate the difference this way. If you sing a note into an empty 55 gallon barrel you get a different sound than if you sang the same note into a 30 gallon one. Jeff is physically bigger than Steve, his air cavity is bigger, so the sound that he produces is different than the sound that Steve does when singing the same note. It's not a criticism of Steve at all, just a statement of physical fact.

I think you are right. He said it wasn't a dis, just education. Even if he thought something negative about Perry, I don't think he'd post it. He is a class act. AND, he has a sense of humor!! Love it!!

I don't think he has any negative thoughts about Perry. He has always said he was one of his major influences & even thanked him on liner notes. When I listen to Jeff's work w/Eyes, I really hear a lot of Perry. Particularly in "Nobody Said It Was Easy" & most especially in one of the "no-ohhhhh"s there. Anyone else hear that?

Exactly. I don't think he does either. Sorry if I came across wrong - I just meant if he DID he wouldn't post it here. Way too classy. Everything I have read/heard him say about SP has been completely positive. He seems to respect/appreciate his work. Can't argue with that!

Some of you may be calling it "not taking any shit" but I'd say it was more like complaining whiningly, imo.

Just because someone says that they are kidding or not dissing, does not mean it's to be taken as such. All the guys in the band have been criticized but you don't see them heading out, protesting and being defensive. His jabs about blatantly stealing style, who would hit the high notes if he and Perry were on stage and this "thin shit" sucks. He wouldn't even have had to state that he wasn't dissing Perry if he didn't already think that he was.

I still say his use of the word "giggle" left a weird picture in my mind. For the life of me, I can't see JSS giggling... :D

That said, JSS will soon have to realize that he can't chase down everyone who has a differing opinion of his singing and try to "set them straight." It makes him look bad...in my opinion. He should take the attitude of "who gives a flying rip what anyone thinks" and just do his job as current singer of Journey. When he makes comments like he did at BT, it makes me think that instead of "giggling," he's really pissed, otherwise why spend the time to "correct" someone.

I'm also not sure I like what he said about Perry having a "thinner" voice. That is simply not true, and if Perry reads that, I can't see how he would appreciate it. However I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and consider that maybe he meant something else altogether. I'm sure JSS must know that in Perry's heyday, his "thin" voice could knock any other singer off the stage. :)

Oh and just in case anyone reads my words as "fighting words," I really like JSS's voice - a lot! I've just ordered his newest CD directly from his website, plus what he did on SoulSirkUS was nothing less than remarkable, in my opinion.

Calm down. Jeff has previously said he couldn't even carry Perry's suitcases. He totally respects Perry.

HOTS everyone complains if the band doesn't post. Now we have a guy like Jeff who interacts w/us & some of u complain about that.

U know that old saying by Lincoln was it? U can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but u just can't please all of the people all of the time.

I think he's just new to the volatile nature of Journey messageboarda Fred. He handles himself very well on them but he doesn't realize how his words are going to be dissected and analyzed and misconstrued by us.

I'm also not sure I like what he said about Perry having a "thinner" voice. That is simply not true, and if Perry reads that, I can't see how he would appreciate it. I think the word "thin" was a bad choice, but I don't think he meant it as an insult. There was never anything "thin" about Perry's voice. In fact there are very few men larger in stature that could sing like Perry does. Jeff was in a situation where he felt he had to respond and those were just the words that came out. You of all people have to realize that I'd be all over him if I thought he was dissing Perry.

Perry has more class than that, Nig

Jr, who the hell wants to hear from him when it's just to bitch about some perceived slight and to get a dig in to compare himself to Perry. It's always about something someone said about him. You all enjoy it and let me voice my opinion. It has nothing at all to do with wanting a response from him.

First off HOTS if I say I'm kidding in a post
much like others around here, I MEAN IT.
If you take it otherwise then that's your Menopausal run.
Next up........
If I made money like anyone in a famous band
I would tend to just pass the pies and look
onto my good fortune.
Lastly.....
The only reason Sir Soto would have to state
something like "I ain't dissin Perry" is because
there are so many fucking Loons like your self
that would make him feel the need to wipe
the slate clean first, yet still you come to
question him.......unfortunate.
Put a fuckin cork in it already.
