Pre-Infinity Songs, Will We Ever Hear Them Live Again?

...Been going off on D1 of the Irvine Gens tour boot....unless I'm mistaken (don't have it in front of me and don't feel like going to grab it) they reeled off the first 4 songs off Time3 in succession, but with some major octane added particularly the guitars/drums/hammond.
I know some proclomations were made that the Generations tour would be the grand retirement sendoff for those classics. But handicappers have had their lights put out trying to bet on wether my man Neal keeps his word on matters Journey. Come on, Neal you know you're among friends here

Though I wouldn't expect to see like side1 of Time3 played like that again, hopefully when they do "evenings with" they do see fit to work in one of these beauties on 1-off bases... Those things are so great in their own way and I think the crowds will appreciate and enjoy the Schon/Cain musicianship, even IF they need to be doled out in smaller doses than the ADD whiners in Irvine could stomach.
Save for Dean, of course.

lots of us cut our teeth on those early tunes,, sometimes i go back and "re-listen" to them,, i would still LOVE to hear Spaceman live... there are some real classics in there.. someone here posted Velvet Curtan in its entirity as it was on cubed.. great stuff,, they have so much material that is worthy of bringing back...... can you imagine JSS singing Look Into the Future live.. wow.... "yes im coming home.........."

Evolution Stage is one of those '79 boots, soundboard, has a phenomenal version of Next..... I think Genesis ripped this riff off for Turn It On Again...

Though I wonder if PrePerry Cubby can stand those live versions that are "defiled" by SP.

I almost think last year's Pre-Perry set was Neal and Jon's way of atoning for the rest of the show being a french farce.
At least there was some real singing happening during the introductory set.

I wouldn't mind them dusting one of these off mid-set in the future.
Jeff should prolly get a break somewhere in between those 2 hour "Evening With" shows.
Then again, more people would recognize "Black Magic Woman" than something from the bygone Rolie days.

Yes he likes those songs with Perry doing BGVox.

In the beginning Perry worked around the songs, filled when it worked, wasn't taking over lead or showing off. He fleshed out the songs!

Cubby has said many times that when he first went and saw Journey in '98 and the band broke out a medley of the pre-Perry tunes he thought 'If the reason we have not heard that material is because of Perry then good riddance.' (to paraphrase)

A good idea would be to blend 2 or 3 of those early tunes into a 7 minute medley. Gives the hardcores something interesting without taking up too much time. Rush does this sometimes with their earlier tracks and 2112 material. It works very well.

That is exactly what they did in 1998.



BTW, I forgot to give my opinion on the pre-Perry material: Sadly, I think it is retired. Unless the band really tries to move away from the Perry-era (and we all know how likely THAT is) then I think the 30th Anniversary Tour was a big send off. Which is the ONE major reason I still want a DVD from that tour (an official one, I have a boot or two and I love 'em). But I think it is time for the band to whittle down the Perry-era material and push new material...the same mantra I have been saying since 2002 when they dropped the Arrival material back out of their set.

The Soundstage video? It's great. Now I can't remember if anyone ever answered my question before about the song SP is singing over the intro to the Comisky Park concert at the beginning of that video. Does anyone have a boot of that song? I'm not sure what it is called now.

Anyway, I was at the Irvine concert & during the Pre-Perry songs the audience booed & got up & left for beer or for good...they also did it for the Generations songs.

I just played it silverblue, and listened closely to it. I don't recognize it at all. Maybe it came from a Pre-Perry album. I don't know much about those.

I forget which concert it was from, but I saw a Too Late/Of a Lifetime/Kohoutek medley once. It was fantastic. The way the mourning "Toooo laaaaate...." merged with Neal's scorching guitar intro gave me chills, man. That medley wasn't more than eight minutes, if I remember correctly, and it owned balls.

Mix in "Look into the Future" somewhere, too. That song is brilliant.... and maybe "To Play Some Music" could be a good opener.
