I must admit, I'll have to go back and refresh my memory. It's been a while since I've listened to that CD, Sherrie. :)

TBF for the first time??
This is different.
Perry's voice and the Schon-Cain-Perry writing trio would make me pay a lot of attention,I'm sure.

I'd be hooked on that voice. What Generation lacked, this one has - a great vocal work that guides the listener throughout the entire album.
I'd be impressed with the sounds.Agressive and soulful Guitar, genius Piano parts and a majestic Orchestra.
Would be intrigued by "Trial By Fire".So different from what rock bands usually do to change style.

I'd rate 5 stars for the sound and considering that BILY should have been a Perry - UB40 collaboration,I'd rate the overall quality of songs with 4.5 out of 5.

..Ok,and a 5 star "Fuck you" for those who didn't give Journey the Grammy for WYLAW that year! (sorry, that still pisses me off, lol)

They say it's Phil Collins-esque, the type of easy listening tailor-made for matronly old hags with arrhythmia.

lol
I think "World Gone Wild" is Journey's answer to that. (Not you personally TNC :) )

I like FIB.

I like how Perry sings "I knewwwww-uh"

Did anybody else notice the "Ask The Lonely" reference in MOL?

Not to mention the "Who's Cryin' Now" reference that's on both the TBF and Arrival albums. Do you guys think that's Neal's signature solo?

My rating

Postby journeywoman » Wed Nov 29, 2006 9:25 am

TBF, is one of my favorites. To me they are all perfection, but the one that has got me lately is Steve with that soulful voice on Down on Me.Then there's Neal with that guitar coming in, to me it's shear soulful perfection. It's like you can almost feel Steve's heart being ripped out on this one.I love them all!

I liked TBF MUCH more at the time BECAUSE it was the return of Journey. The more I listened to it the less I liked it. If you take away Journey's history then I do not think I would have bought it.

that is my favorite song because of the ending guitar solo. It is neat how the solo builds then it reaches its crescendo but I feel the song is too short in my opinion

I have a hard time with TBF love the first three songs, then too me it sounds a lot like For The Love Of Strange Medience...which is not a bad thing just not a the Journey sound on alot of those songs.....Perrys vocals are not in question they are awesome as always too many slow tempo songs on TBf for MY liking..just my opinion. I stiil have TBF and still play it.

Interesting thread....

Actually listening to TBF as I type this....

Here's my take :

  • Message of Love = 9 ( Great song, nuff said )
  • One More = 6.5 ( deep lyrics, ok song )
  • When You Love a Woman = 8 ( Awesome ballad )
  • If He Should Break Your Heart = 5 ( sorry, just can't stomach the next 2 songs - waaay un-Journey)
  • Forever in Blue = 5
  • Castles Burning = 6 ( Lyrically nice, ok song )
  • Don't Be Down on Me Baby = 5.5 ( Boring, Perry shines at certain points in the song )
  • Still She Cries = 9 ( Sad song...EVERY member shines on this one, keys, bass, guitar, drums & vocals and a beautiful string session )
  • Colors of the Spirit = 5 ( very average song )
  • When I Think of You = 8.5 ( A tiny tear of joy everytime I hear this one )
  • Easy to Fall = 8 ( Great song )
  • Can't Tame the Lion = 8 ( This one rocks...! )
  • It's Just the Rain = 5.5 ( Boring )
  • Trial By Fire = 6.5 ( Schon subtle licks in this song and the lyrics saves this one )
  • Baby I'm a Leavin' You = 7.5 ( LOVE this song, a different kind of Journey )
  • I Can See it in Your Eyes = 6.5 ( I know, I know...somehow I just could NEVER dig this song...I dunno why )

For me, TBF was the album that clearly showcased a side of Steve Smith, yes Steve Smith, that we've never heard before in previous Journey albums...his chops were varied and simply superb..!

Just my take...

I think it's really cool that "When You Love A Woman" was recorded live in the studio. (Not completely live of course, they did vocal harmonies and orchestral overdubs later)

Something I don't think I noticed until Kevin Shirley pointed it out on his website was how you can hear Neal play rhythm guitar up until the solo when he switches to lead. Just one of those little cool things that make you go, "Wow, it was live."

Also if you listen carefully you can hear a slight hiss under Steve's vocal that disappears when he's not singing. I think that's another little indication that it's live because if they had recorded his lead vocal after everything else, they probably would have taken the time to get it pristine and without any hiss on the vocals at all. And you know it's not tape hiss because this was well into the digital era.

That might be the only "live" Journey performance during the "Trial By Fire" era.

I submitted a question about it to the Steve Perry Q&A. I'm hoping he'll say something like, "Yeah, the whole album was pretty much done live." That way it's kinda like a Journey live performance and Journey studio album all in one and a great finale to the Perry era.

Anyway, I just think it's really cool. :)

Umm, good ears, Jeremy....or shall I say, good sound system..

I caught this too, but, and I may be wrong, isn't that an indication that Perry's vocals were recorded AFTER the track was done..?

Again, I maybe wrong...maybe Nora or Jeremey could shed some light on this...?

Or someone else....
