TBF reminds me of "old school" figure-skating....

I'm talking about precision, control, reining it in, and NO "bombast"...on the songs "Still She Cries", "It's Just The Rain", and "TBF"

Back in the day, Skaters had to focus and do intricate patterns on the ice, PRECISELY....that's WHY it was called "Figure Skating".

THEN, they can do the "physical fireworks" of triple-jump combinations; fancy footwork at top speed, etc.

IMO, this could be applied to Journey, on the TBF CD.

I mean, c'mon....we KNOW they could TOTALLY "rock-out"....just listen to "Edge of the Blade" or "Message of Love", for that matter; I'll wait...

But I think they had the maturity on this CD to perform skillfully, and quietly....which, for Mr. Schon, must've been TORTURE!! LOL

I've been listening to this CD this week, and these are my thoughts on it....I know they don't have to be yours....

...and yes, I'm "bracing myself".....

Excellent post and I agree. I think TBF had a maturity and depth not found on most other Journey albums.

wow nora , your much deeper than i... i do really like TBF... but as far as i could take it would be that people could actually skate to the songs.. like at the winter olympics.. would be cool to see someone skate to "dont be down on me baby" or "if he should break your heart".. couples skating.. i just hit the bottom of my deepness.. im tapped out..

Great post Nora. I agree. The band was showing it's maturity and skill on this album. They knew they were beyond the bombast. They were taking their music to the highest level of perfection. A perfect "10".

There are some great moments on "Trial By Fire", i.e. "Message of Love", "When You Love a Woman", "If He Should Break Your Heart", "Can't Tame the Lion", and the title track but the rest is pure dreck. The worst of the Perry/Augeri-era albums, in my opinion.

Nora I think that was the best explained yet.Maturity,but I think they were also going to another horizon.The soulfulness brought out on some of these songs can literally rip your heart out.Experimentation,hum maybe,but with the strings and the way Neal rips on some of these songs is timeless.I think they all did a great job.They can play rock better than anybody out but man these guys have soul.
