The Storm (Live) Just the Same Way - vid clip

Postby AR » Sun Dec 03, 2006 3:27 am

Here's a clip from San Jose 92. Full song

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?a ... 820BBE8ED6

The picture size is small in the interest of a quick download. Greg Rolie, Ross Valory and Kevin Chalfant. Good stuff!

AR

Thanks for posting that clip....I've never seen it before. I was blown away at KC's vocals....absolutely the closet thing to Perry I have ever heard.

OK, heres my take, since I had never heard Kevin Chalfont before....WHY IN THE HELL DID THEY GET SA WHEN KS WAS A MUCH BETTER CHOICE....were they deaf, dumb and blind????? Was money an issue...????was KC not available? I have always liked Rolie and especially when he did a duet with SP and/ or KS in this vid.... Thanks AR for posting that...I'm just catching up on the music and bands from the mid 80's thru the early 90's as I was raising 2 teenagers and going thru a divorce in 1983-1984...I wanted to thank all of you for all the music you have posted here...it has given me hours of enjoyment of my fav band...I have always loved SP and Journey from the first note of OPEN ARMS that I heard...I thought SP had the most incredible, unique and soulful voice I had ever heard and still think so....However Jeff certainly brings a new life to the band and he is a marvelous talent....just love to watch him perform....

Gran,

Chalfant actually worked with and performed with Journey before TBF was started. It was Kevin C, Gregg R. and Schon. For some reason the deal went south and they brought Perry back. Rumor has it they wrote and recorded some material. Kevin has claimed he'll record it someday but nothing has surfaced yet. I was shocked when Kevin did not get the Journey gig. Anyhow, I'm sure there are others here (Monker) who know a lot more detail of why Kevin was chosen. Herbie mentioned he could be "high maintenance" or something like that in one interview.

L8r,

Aaron

Despite having a great reputation among fans, Kevin is painted as being something of a problem child by Herbie Herbert.
Herbie also mentioned that Kevin doesn't look as good as Augeri.
Was that a dealbreaker for Neal and Co.?
I'd like to think not, however, Neal has mentioned that he picked Augeri because he felt he was alot more "happening" as a singer.

Kevin once sang with Journey at a Herbie Herbert roast to much acclaim.
For whatever the reason, Jon and Neal don't want him as their frontman.

The S.A. Looked

My god, when I seen S.A. with Journey he looks just like Pauley Shore.I had to keep looking twice I thought it was Pauley.

And at one point, Herbie had nothing but accolades for Augeri. That's not to say that things couldn't have changed with Herbie's opinion now, but my point is this: show me a lead singing front man who never fights with his ego and never at some point in his career becomes a "problem child." I don't think they exist...except for maybe Il Divo (translation: the Divine Male Performer) :D but those guys are ALL out front and consistently share the spotlights equally. There's not much chance for jealousy or competition to crop up since they all have a specific singing part in their quartet.

If Neal, Jon or anyone else is looking for the "perfect" lead singer who has voice, creativity and humility 100% of the time, I doubt seriously that they'll find him, because I don't think that person exists. Besides, that's not how we define a "rock god." Put anyone up on stage and after awhile I would think there would be the tendency to become a bit enamored with yourself. The lead singer is the one who acts as "frontman," and usually talks to the crowd, introduces songs and runs or jumps around the entire stage during the concert. Most of the other musicians pretty much stay in one area of the stage rarely say "boo" to the crowd. Is it any wonder that many lead singers start thinking that the band is there to simply back them up?

All eyes get focused on the lead singer. The lead singer can leave the band and sing "on his own" with a new backup band and essentially get the same sound that he got when he was with his original band (before anyone knew who he was). Maybe not the same quality of songs with the new band, but similar in sound. I would think it would take an awfully strong personality to fight against the constant temptation to think really highly of yourself and NOT become a "problem child."

Herbie really hasn't wavered.
Since the Castles Burning interview he stated that Chalfant is a better singer than Steve Augeri.
He recently re-iterated these statements in an interview with classicrockrevisited.com

Neal also said that Augeri was a chameleon (the same word he used to describe JSS when promoting SS) and could take Journey in any direction they wanted to go.
Though the description can be taken more literal regarding JSS given his diverse discography and ability to "sound like" Hagar, Perry, etc.
I only hope he follows through on different directions this time.

Chalfant hits the Perry notes so effortlessly. He's probably the closest thing to Perry vocal wise around.

Larry,

I seen Kevin a couple of years ago at the Illinois State Fair. He can still hit the notes well, or at least he could a couple of years ago.

Thanks, Aaron, TNC, and Fred for all the great info.... I still think he was a better choice than SA...SA had a weak voice and he did sound better 5 years ago....but JSS has much more energy and style than SA had....However, you all know who I would choose for a one-off in this decade!!!!! :)

I always wanted Kevin to be the one to replace Perry. And at the beginning did not want Augeri in, for the simple reason I wanted Kevin as the lead singer. I became an Augeri fan after hearing Arrival and Remember Me. then seeing him in concert really blew me away. I was an Augeri fan, no turning back. Went and bought his stuff with Tall Stories and Tyketto.
Then when things started going south for Augeri, I was hoping Kevin would come in until Augeri could get better. If Augeri didnt come back, I knew journey would be in good hands with Kevin. I was against having JSS in because Kevin should have been the one back years ago. Granted I didn't know anything about JSS (still don't other than the Journey and SS stuff the past year or so). But I was impressed seeing JSS this year, and I am looking forward to the future with the band. JSS holds promise and looks, to maybe bring most of the people on this board together. Still can't but wish Kevin was in there.-ERIC
