I was under the impression that his main purpose in life was to sound as much like SP as he could in order to kinda convince the general public that Journey was still the Journey they were familiar with. Even the way JoePa stated it above makes that seem like the case. While it's true JSS has a different vocal styling, he still has a lot of Perryisms that remind the listener how great SP was.

It seems to me that JSS is like a chameleon, who is able to change his 'color' based on what he's singing and who he's singing to. From Journey to Queen to Prince to Steel Dragon. And he nails it each time!!! THAT'S what makes him such an incredible performer, IMO. :)

I think you're right on all counts. Augeri never had a sound that was distinctively his own and I thinik that was by design. Jeff will just automatically combine the Soto vocal sound with the Journey music sound and it'll still be Journey but with a distinctive vocal sound again. Not like Perry, but with a few Perryisms as a tribute to the Master, and a lot stronger and more distinctive sound than Augeri.

Agreed.

Mix a little of this:

and this:

.......in with the Journey sound and I'm completely sold. :D I see Journey as two separate entities: classic Journey w/Perry and future Journey w/JSS. I'm sorry but I guess I'm shallow when it comes to my rock and roll, because alot of it has to do with how captivating the frontman is and it's not a diss, but SA just never did it for me.

I agree regarding Augeri. I remember stating on BT years ago that I felt that Augeri's voice was too soft and that I hoped it held out. I also stated then that I felt they needed a singer with more of a hard-edge to his vox.

No, not anything. I'm picky, believe it or not. Augeri didn't do anything for me. I didn't find him sexy at all. But I do like almost anything Steve Perry.

Um girls, I was never a fan of Augeri w/Journey, u all know that, so u can take my opinion for what it's worth. But let me tell u, he DID have his own sound w/Tall Stories & it was a pretty good one. There's a song on that album I really like: Sister of Mercy. I'll be glad to upload it if u guys want to hear it. On that song (& others on the TS album), SA doesn't sound anything like Perry. It's really a pity TS didn't get the breaks they deserved. They were a very good band.

I can't watch the videos but I feel the same way you do about the rest of it. It's the vocals that pull me in and if the vocalists looks good and has a charismatic stage presense that's what really sells it for me.

I never thought he had a bad voice. In fact he sounded like he could have been pretty good in his own element. I just don't think he had the voice to front Journey.

Maybe he'll get enough of his voice back to be able to do something again.

I would like to hear that song if you have a chance to upload it. I have only really heard Chain Of Love from Tall Stories, aside from various short samples a while ago.

Deen said this off-the-cuff. Cut the guy some slack. He is only the fucking drummer. He didn't write or compose the song.
It's not his job to articulately describe the creative process.

That may be so but it's still HACK.

Point being is that nobody really wants to hear another Open Arms.

Cut some slack...? That's a funny request coming from someone who refuses to climb off SA's back.

FyreWyngz wrote:Have you ever listened to E5C4P3? I mean REALLY LISTENED? The cool thing about it is it's acoustics. It sounds like it was recorded in a barn somewhere out in the country one clear moonlight night after a square dance. Even the chord structure on some of the songs is in the vein of the country jangle and honk. It's about as close to a country album as JOURNEY could get without sounding like Garth Brooks. JOURNEY brought their sound to Jon Cain's songs and made them soar. Listen to Cain's Back To The Innocence and you can clearly hear how it could be another E5C4P3 if Neal, SP, SS, and RV played on it.

I have never heard anyone say E5C4P3 sounds like it has country influence. I just don't hear it.

Agreed. Some of the chord progressions may be similar to some country music but that in no way gives it the country sound. It just isn't there. Now, I have heard discussed before the fact that Ross used to tune his bass in such a way that made it similar to bassists playing country music. I believe it's called "Nashville tuning". That doesn't make it sound anything like country music, either, though.

I said that some of the songs are in the vein of country music. To me anything in the key of G or songs that use open G chords tend to have that country honk to them.

Another song I'd always heard country in is You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC! The chorus in particular has a line dancing kind of feel to it! I read an article in a guitar magazine where they were reviewing some of Angus Young's licks and they asked him what keys should be avoided. He said, "C# and G for starters." He contended that G is too sweet for Rock. The interviewer jumped and said, "But Angue YSMANL is in the key of G!" Angus admitted that the chorus definitely has a country western feel to it. It seems to me that that was a Mutt Lange influence. Not surprisingly, that song has a real appeal over a range of artists in various genres. Shakira has even played it in concert. Of course, she puts a much sexier spin on it.

EDIT:
I thought about this and my memory may be failing on the Shakira playing YSMANL in concert. In any case I'm positive she played Back In Black (which actually uses the more Rock chords of E, A, and D) as it's on her Live and Off the Record 2003 DVD. BTW that DVD is a great example of Shakira's genius and her ability to transcend, crossover, and mix music styles unlike anyone else.

What? Neal sometimes uses Open G? And if so, he did it on ESC4P3?
