Those Journey songs were written in keys that are so tough for anyone to hit. Dennis the fucking poodle does still sound good, but singing a Styx catalogue versus a Journey catalogue, is a HUGE difference. Perhaps Perry is scared shitless that he cannot actually sing these classic hits anylonger? Hell, Ed, there is a reason Jordan, Gretzky and Elway all retired; they couldn't perform at the level that made them great. I admire the Hell out of Perry for stepping down when he did due to not feeling he couldn't sing at the level of earlier times. What he needs to understand is, his voice is so fucking good, that I would love to hear him sing today, even if Anyway You Want It was sung an octave lower. Who cares?

But dude, your relentless Perry crusade is so fucking embarrassing. The guy will go down as a top 5 singer of all time, and a voice that will never be replicated. Before all you Wigglers say, "ya, but you went on a crusade too, Dean," I would say, yeah, but the crusade I went on had a destination and a fucking good reason behind it. This personal hatred for Perry is beyond me.

So was Barry Sanders! That's life folks. I think Dean is dead on that Perry truly cares about what he sounds like. He does not want to record music and embarrass himself, if the voice isn't there. As he said, the human voice isn't a typical "instrument", and is quite unpredictable. There is something to be said about a guy walking away on top of his game. I'm quite sure Perry is most cognizant of how he is "worshipped" by many fans. I mean hell...the guy implores people not to park in front of his house and "stalk" him, and this is 10 years after living almost as a recluse (exluding his recent baseball game appearances). Some people are simply smart enough to not ruin their legacy. I'm not suggesting this is the reason Perry hasn't recorded any music in 10 years. That said, the further he gets away from it, the more he probably realizes that he has absolutely nothing to gain by putting his voice out there again.

This probably isn't the best analogy, but, when Larry Bird retired from basketball, there were many Boston fans who couldn't understand why he wouldn't take a job with the Celtics. Soon after retiring, he began coaching his hometown Indiana Pacers and is still their GM. I've read many interviews with Bird where be openly admitted that he would never want to do anything to "taint" his legacy in the city of Boston. For the record, Bird could run for Governor of Massachusetts tomorrow, and win by a landslide. My point is that this guy was smart enough to let his body of work in Boston speak for itself and he never wanted the fans of his having any memories, other than the ones that were formed when he was in his prime!

Great post, John. I also think of Michael Jordan as another analogy (I'm no sports historian, so I could get some stuff wrong here...). He retired on top of his game, but only a few years later not only did he make a miserable attempt at baseball, but when he came back to the Bulls he definitely had lost some of that magic that made him "MJ". I can see something like that happening here. And so while I would give anything to have some new music from him, I do understand his reluctance to risk it (if that's what he's doing).

I also happen to believe (just me, in my heart) that he might feel like it's not worth it since it wouldn't be Journey... I think the references to taking care of himself probably meant physically and emotionally, and he's perhaps now at a place where he's ready to put some of those pieces back together.

There are some really good posts here... I've often wondered why Steve doesn't just retire? He could say he's retired from singing/touring, but still stay in touch with the fans through Fan Asylum or whatever... I've tried to puzzle through that but can't think of any reason why he wouldn't announce it...

Maybe he really hasn't decided if he's going to sing again or not. He doesn't owe us an announcement any more than he owes us a new album. He's a man who has had a tremendous career and gave us a lot of great music. If he gives us more that's a bonus for us. :)

He still has his hand in producing other people, but basically just chillin'

I think we have the truth. We just want to analyze, dissect, analyze some more, dissect some more, etc. etc. ad infinitum. He said he didn't want to record at first & he didn't. Then he said he was thinking about it. When he met the Perryville gals, he said he was gonna see if he still had it & practice some scales. Now he says he's gonna sneak into a studio & see if he still has it or not. Next yr, someone needs to ask him how his studio trip went. If he answers that he doesn't have it, that's that.
