The "Forest For the Trees" Syndrome

Postby TRAGChick » Mon Dec 04, 2006 10:20 am

Steve Perry, during a phone interview (I transcribed it, with as much "emotional punctuation" as I could):

"...It was a different time, man - we had a mission and a group (long sigh)......I emotionally, uh.....was unstoppable....uh....my Mother was alive; was pulling for me...my Father, though they weren't together, was pulling for me...my Grandfather was alive...the whole landscape of that has changed...and uh - y'know, you lose - you lose some of the incentive that you didn't realize was driving you, y'know? To - to do - to do good....to do it....to DO it.

Now that it's been DONE, now lookin' BACK at it...it's - it's - I'm TRYIN' my best to DIGEST IT."

[later on, he talks about the DVD]

"...When I heard "Open Arms", I got choked-up because there's certain vocal things I did in "Open Arms" I'm not sure I'll be able to pull off exactly like that AGAIN. Because it was such a MOMENT - and I had reached BEYOND the Master recordings to what I knew it COULD be, and I was ALWAYS doing that, and DAMNED if I didn't grab, for instance, the lyric in the 2nd verse: "Wanting you near..." ....that lyric is sung exactly the way I wanted it to be sung - and I DIDN'T KNOW I hit it - I didn't know I GOT it."

IMO, the last 2 phrases speak VOLUMES....I mean, he was just OUT THERE, DOING HIS JOB....I really don't think he ever REALIZED his impact on the Vocal World.....until now.

I mean, you SAW his PRIDE about how he listens to everything in his car....he even said something like, "sorry if this comes across as arrogant..."

EFFING HORSE HOCKEY!!! - ROCK ON, LISTENING TO WHAT YOU'VE ACCOMPLISHED!!

Steve...you revolutionized the "Rock Tenor" vocal delivery....people WANT to try to sound like you....

DO SOMETHING!!

I know Nora, I got a kick out of him saying he listens to TBF and ROR in his car. Personally ROR = I think his best vocal work. I hate that he is his own worst enemy when it comes to his voice.

He made sure it was perfected without

He apparently did not know for sure he had perfected it. He questioned himself all along. Now that it's later he has finally seen...he really did it!And I am like him I've been stuck on TBF and ROR for the last few months. I love all of it!

Ding, ding, ding. THAT is what I have been saying for years, and years, and years.

If he doesn't WANT to do it, why do you demand he do it anyway?

Monker, I don't think we are demanding, just expressing our desire to hear him sing again...I believe at his point in time that he does not want to sing for the public again....he knows it is not the 1980's anylonger...and his voice is not the same due to age...some of the singers age differently...some at that age are still able to do it. and other can't...guess he is one of the latter....our misfortune...he had such an incredible voice that it is hard to duplicate even tho' others have tried...
we just miss his voice and talent, but thats what cd's are for....we have got to stop hoping and wishing b/c it is unhealthy for us to keep doing so.... I am looking forward to some new music with JSS and hope I don't have to wait til 2008, 2007 would be much better....JSS if u are reading....I'm not getting any younger, ya know...

He should be proud of what he did & it is great that he loves to listen to the music instead of trying to bury it in the past. When you get older (and I speak of all of us) & things start falling apart physically - all the things you took for granted that are slowly disappearing, now become treasured.

It's true he will never reach that vocal perfection again in this life...but, thank god he did & it is permanently recorded. I guess, I believe that it is such a strong reaction on his part that he won't ever attempt to put himself out there again...it is safer in the background singing & I imagine that is what he thinks.

LOL...when somebody SHOUTS out "DO SOMETHING!", that's a demand!

I believe at his point in time that he does not want to sing for the public again....

Then you disagree with PERRY's OWN WORDS...because that is NOT what HE said, "y'know, you lose - you lose some of the incentive that you didn't realize was driving you, y'know? To - to do - to do good....to do it....to DO it."

He didn't say, "I just don't want to sing for the public again..." He is saying he doesn't have the incentives he once did (his family). As JDK said, Perry has no motivation. There is no drive there for him to get off his lazy ass and go to a recording studio and WORK, or to go out on a tour and WORK.

Guess I should have added "IMO", i didn't say he said that....just my thoughts....I didn't shout anything...lmaybe a few did, but only a few....most just said that they missed him...stop trying to twist everyones words and bait everyone...i'm tired of it...why can't u say something nice just once is awhile....have a nice nite....
