I found a list of all-time WORLDWIDE album sales by artist. Here are the Top 20:

4129 The Beatles
2625 Led Zeppelin
2328 Hollywood Movie Soundtracks
2262 Elvis Presley
1759 Various (collections/label promo)
1508 Eagles
1453 Pink Floyd
1381 Billy Joel
1311 Elton John
1154 Barbra Streisand
1134 The Rolling Stones
1123 AC/DC
0956 Bruce Springsteen
0930 Kenny Rogers
0928 Journey
0897 Aerosmith
0876 Michael Jackson
0860 Simon & Garfunkel
0849 Van Halen
0839 Fleetwood Mac

This site has Journey at 92.8 million worldwide. What's even MORE perplexing is the breakdown. It's as follows:
Frontiers: 32.4 million
Escape: 19.8 million
Greatest Hits: 13.0 million
Infinity: 7.2 million
Evolution: 6.6 million
Departure: 6.3 miilion
Raised On Radio: 3.0 million
Trial By Fire: 500,000

I would have NEVER guessed that Frontiers is far and away their best selling album. However, the list appears to be very legit. Any thoughts?

PS Street talk was at 3.4 million

I believe this is cumulative, meaning, singles, albums, videos, the works.

By the way, ABBA is up there in album sales.

I never imagined that Street Talk outsold Raised On Radio.
Nor do I understand Frontiers being the biggest one. I knew that already but still, my ears tell me Escape, with Evolution and Radio not far behind. Radio only sold 3 mil...I don't get it.

TBF does not surprise me. Not much promo and no tour, so it died on the operating table.
1st single should have been Message of Love. Might have then sold.... 800,000.
I believe that album would have done well, if only they had toured.

The first single WAS Message of Love, co-released with When you love a woman. MOL to Rock stations, WYLAW to AC stations.

I too find it hard to believe that Any combo of Frontiers sold 30+mil.

I was thinking about that, too. Is it possible Frontiers sold more BECAUSE of Escape? Since it was the follow-up to such a mega hit, more people bought it right away. The only fly in that ointment I can see is that after 20+ years, I would've thought it would balance out more, but maybe not! Just my .02

Sorry. Apologies. I didn't know that...I came in late in the game on that record.
All you ever hear about is WYLAW, so.... well then I need to ammend my position.
Maybe that one would have tanked anyway then. Message of Love is the best one on that record,
and if even THAT didn't help it along...then I don't know.

no need to ammend positions.

just saying... it was kind of odd and I guess it was just starting that bands would release two songs at a time from a new "album". the good thing about it was that you could hear two new songs right away, without having to wait for the next one to be released.

Yeah. That's always been my feeling on it. I think Escape is responsible for Frontiers doing so well.
I think that it didn't balance out more because Greatest Hits came along. GH shifted that balance to the tune of 13 mil, otherwise I think you'd be seeing very different numbers there.

Frontiers must have been HUGE in Japan. That's the only thing I can think of. It MUST have sold at least 10 milllion. I can't think of ANY other possible explanation.

Those are all certainly possible for Frontiers higher numbers. I agree about the original GH album. I remember hearing/reading at the time that the album was doing AMAZINGLY well for a GH album without new songs, tours, etc. I know several of my friends who are "casual" Journey fans bought it because it had "everything" they wanted.

You have to think back to 1983 for the start of this.......Frontiers was Journey's biggest tour, for Escape they had 2 shows in Houston, for Frontiers they had 3, I saw 2 of them......you had mega hits like Seperate ways, Faithfully, After you fall (also in Risky Business, the party scene when Cruise was talking to his parents on the phone in the garage, huge movie)....take a look at the tour list, they were in some city's for a week at a time.....Escape the album and tour hyped them up for the Frontiers album and tour even more, you had the best of Escape and Frontiers at those shows.......talk about ass kicking!!, it was unreal!!.....

This list is incorrect.
Europe has sold far more than 5,2 million and Kiss at 33,5??!!! C´mon
Abba down at 4,7.....hahahahaha.
And as far as I know, the biggest selling album with Journey is still Greatest
Hits so I think we can say that this list shouldn´t be taken seriously.
Abba has sold more than 350 million records.
Kiss has sold more than 80 million records.
Journey is not just a band,it´s a way of life!

Can you post the link to this, so we can check out the source? Some of the stats are obviously inaccurate. Using ABBA as an example, according to that list they have sold a mere 4.7 Million records, and somebody suggested these numbers include all sales (albums, videos, singles etc). Well, a quick check shows that ABBA have had several multi-million selling albums, and singles sales over 350 Million. Something looks a bit amiss here. Are the figures quoted just for US sales?

I'm with you on this. Look at Queen, Backstreet Boys, ect...This list is way-off.

Trial By Fire 500,000?? That album went platinum, which means at least a million copies sold. Hell, Arrival sold about 350,000 worldwide. And yea, I thought Greatest Hits was the all time best seller for Journey? Something's screwed up about those figures...who the frigg compiles all those worldwide statistics anyway? RIAA is strictly North America, correct? This gets so fucking confusing sometimes. Does band management even know the correct figures? I doubt it. I really don't think it's possible for any of those figures to be even close to accurate.

Well, if this list is even remotely valid, where the hell is Paul Rodgers? Didn't some genius on this board state he has sold over 125 million albums??? I don't think I even saw any of his 37 bands on the list! How could that be

This list is a load of BS.
I know the sales figures for some of those artists are WAY different to what's shown there. I'd like to know where it came from as well- if nothing else so that I can avoid any info from that place in the future!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, wine and chocolate in hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "what a ride!"

There's no way Jeff Foxworthy equals ABBA in sales. Something's wrong with this list.
