That was following up on Jeremey's post about foreshadowing in lyrics.

ANY 'percussion-heavy' TOTO ( Africa, Mushanga, Bottom of your soul ) is still miles ahead of COTS in every aspect...!

The album started out promising with two amazing rockers and a phenomenal ballad. The rest of the album was too inconsistent, uninspired, and spotty. Sill She Cries and One More are my two favorites on this album. One More is awesome because of the rhythm section (Ross and Smitty were unchained on this one) as well as the fantasy lyrics, and Still She Cries is EPIC. The first time I heard Neal's solo, I shed a tear. It really was that beautiful. The vocals, bass, piano, and everything on this song was just spot-on.

I kind of like it, no joke. Depressing songs suit Perry. Guess its his woe is me vibe thing he's had going on since 86.

I agree...but Perry's voice sounds melancholic rather than depressed...not a huge difference between the two...except that melancholia is more soulful, I guess...

And you NIG are being most unsoulful. :)

Wow. Sure doesn't make you excited about a future Journey album with Perry.

Things happen for a reason. And what happened with Perry was too bad for all involved, but I don't think I would have liked the direction they would have taken with him back in the band. More albums like this and I can guarantee I wouldn't be on a Journey message board.

Baby I'm Leavin' You is on now. Whose idea was this one?

TBF (the song) is in my top ten all-time Journey tracks....and if Perry rejoined the band and recorded an entire album in this style I'd be delighted. Sure, this is the sound of an ageing band...but I'd rather this than have a bunch of fiftysomethings in leather trousers ponce about to "Anyway You Want It".

I'm with you all the way though about Baby, I'm Leaving You. White people playing reggae is always an embarrassment....

I'm glad u people finally woke up...I've been telling u that is my fav. album.....its about time u all woke up...Perry is fantastic on this album, even tho; his voice is lower....thats why any new material from him would be lower and AWESOME, AWESOME. AWESOME...thats why he has to get off his old fat ass and do something, thats not a order but a request from his oldest fan.... Maybe someone will pass this info on to him....yea, fat chance.

NIG doesn't get it. It's Just The Rain is one of my favorite tune's. Very soulful, heartfelt, and sexy. Makes you want to reach out to Steve and give him a hug. ( coming from a female perspective ) haha!....The rhythm of the music has a very soulful flow to it also.
I love TBF! 8)

Sony made the decision to make TBF so ballad heavy. They thought they had to stick with the past formula for success (Open Arms/Faithfully). I think Cain, Perry & Schon all brought song ideas they had been working on to the table when they reunited and put those TBF ongs together. TBF may be ballad heavy, but they are masterpieces compared to some of that syrupy wedding shit on Arrival. Still She Cries has some of Cain's best keys on it, and Schon and Perry sound great, too. If ya want to be particulary gay about it, it is a "beautiful" sounding song. One More doesn't have those wedding song lyrics, (thank God) which suits me fine and Smitty's skins ARE smokin' and Perry's vocals are on fire. If I could have heard that line-up do one song from TBF, it's One More. Hell, I'd like to hear them all, but that ain't gonna happen.
Don't Be Down, Easy to Fall, MOL, Still She Cries, TBF and One More...all killer tunes in my book. Can do without Forever in Blue. Anybody know what Can't Tame the Lion is about? I thought they were talking about Schon's guitar playing, especially since he does that shredder of a solo in that.
I gotta agree about the maturity of the CD. It's 5 guys that have been to war together, went home awhile and came back together to reflect on where they'd been and what they had. A great piece of work, IMO.
Baby I'm Leaving You? A fun filler, not to be taken as anything other than that. Now I've gotta go get the sucker out of the car and listen to it.

Men! Forever In Blue is a great song.....he's lost forever in her blue eye's.....fell "into" her....he's consumed by her...in his mind, his dreams....he got a soul "connection" through her blue eyes when they meet. He find's out she already has someone, but he can't get her out of his mind. May be too corny for you, but I dig it! 8)

yeah, I get it. It's about Oh Sherrie and her blue eyes that he's lost in, right? Ok, dude was still carrying a torch. I'll give him a pass on that one! 8) Still not one of my fav songs on the CD, though.

That is what I was just thinking after reading thru the prior posts...it would've been embarrassing if they came back after 10 yrs from ROR to act & sound like they did when they were in their 20s-early 30s. With the TBF CD, they showed they grew & evolved & didn't try to go for "what worked before"...I loved this CD the first time I heard it (with the exception of "one more" "castles burning" & "can't tame the lion" & "baby I'm a leaving you")...okay, so I love the MAJORITY of it. :) To me this CD is very introspective & emotionally retrospective. I also feel like "A Better Life" from Generations follows this vibe.

This is just my opinion, but in Can't Tame The Lion I think he's saying that he has her on his mind, her memory haunts him. He'll never forget her and will always love her, but he fought it....didn't want to be "tamed". Lion= man...king of the jungle kind of thing. Didn't want to be contolled by her....tied down....wanted to still play the field. Oh Sherrie got tired of waiting for him, moved on to someone else. Perry seems to regret not knowing what he had at the time, didn't appreciate it. Didn't realize till after she was gone. Even though trying again later, they couldn't get back what they had. His decision and loss of her seem's to haunt him. Must have been the love of his life,,,his soulmate....didn't realize it till it was too late. JMO.

Maturity, evolved - LOL

Ok whatever. It bored the shit out of me.

I have used the same kind of terms to justify poor albums by other bands who are favorites of mine. I'd do ANYTHING to convince myself I liked something.

"One More" is awesome because it is DIFFERENT and kicks ass. It's not a sappy slow song, like most of the album. It's not a throwback to "Separate Ways", as "Message of Love" seems. "One More" is imginative, rocking, progressive sounding, and simply a very well made "current" sounding song. It's the only song on the album I care to continue listening to.

And, it starts off with Neal ripping off a lick from Van Halan. The title also reminded me of "Forever Blue" by LRB, which is a 1000x better....with vocals Perry could only dream of performing.

Most people are not nice, some just have manners and appear to be. :o

I guess I should've said any guy should be nice AND be able to speak their mind. It's just that some people take those who speak their minds to be mean.

No one should really speak their mind exactly how they're thinking it all the time. Sometimes people do really need to hear the cold, blunt truth. Other times, you need to be a little more diplomatic about things. THAT'S the difference. If it pisses people off, then so be it.
