Should Journey play any Soul SirkUs songs

Postby purpleplanet10 » Fri Dec 08, 2006 7:58 am

i know on my last post i opened a can of worms and that not my intent. My bestfried asked me the other day if they make Jeff the official lead singer do i think that they would play any Soul SirkUs songs since Neal and Jeff and at it's start Dean were members of the band, i said good question so here it goes should they?

No. They never sang "Wild on the Run" - which would have been cool to hear. Of course, it was just SA in Tall Stories.

I vote no.

I don't think one would hurt. But make it kinda "fan friendly" like Praise or Coming Home. Obviously don't saturate the Journey setlist with SS tunes...but one would be a nice treat for die hards and people (like me) who never got to see SS.

Only in a special one-off type of show. Never on a full blown tour. There's too much Journey material to play as it is. People bitch and complain about a 90 min set or a 2 1/2 set. There's more than enough Journey music to be played.

While *I* would LOVE it, I know from what I've read in the past alot of people probably would say no. I remember reading alot of people say SS was "too heavy" to them  lol.

So that's why if Jeff, Neal, & Marco throw in some SS at the show next month, then I'll be one super happy camper, lol. Never got to see SS either, so this may be my one & only chance!

I do think though that if Journey were to throw in a SS tune though, it should be "Coming Home", just an amazing song.

I agree Coming Home would fit in well. I think Friends to Lovers would work also. On song in evening with Journey type of concert would be fine. In a 90min set, I think no.

No. SS failed and is now a thing of the past. There would be no reason for it. Journey is a different animal. Journey with JSS needs to establish its own identity. The only way to do that is with new music.

Just a little comment on this...
Not arguing but, you do know that
SS's failure had nothing to do with the music?
That was all politics.

Anyhoo, to answer the original question, I don't think
the SS stuff would be appropriate right now...
Maybe a few years, albums and tours down the road
but not yet.
However, and I've said this before, I think Jeff's
solo jam "Believe In Me" could easily be a staple in
a Journey set, not mention a killer single if the band were
to re-record it :)

It's easy to blame it on politics. Could it be that there was not a market demand for such a band?

True, that helped too.
But because it coulda interferred with Journey
(remember, Neal was recording and mixing Generations during the breaks of the SS tour),
Soul Sirkus pretty much got no major promotion
or publicity push from Management.
I think I recall reading that they weren't even
allowed to even MENTION "Journey" in the promotional stuff...

But I definitely see what you're saying.

If great song's like "Higher Place" or "To Be Alive Again" didn't manage to become "staples" I don't think anything can. Any new stuff put out will only be paperclips :D

SS becoming a success or not is completely irrelevant to me, when it comes to this question. My answer is a resounding NO, NO, NO!!!!!!! Bands like The Eagles are well known for playing a lot of Henley and Frey's music (and even sneak in Joe Walsh's one hit) at Eagles concerts. That said, their solo material is VERY close to Eagles material. SS is so far removed from who Journey is that it has no place on the stage with a band calling themselves "Journey"!

Yea, HP, Alive Again, hell, even We Will Meet Again would sound great...
That's what sucks about a band like Journey; their catalogue is SO
FREAKING HUGE!!! They can't please us all...
They be playing 5 hour sets every night :D

No SS songs...however...I would LOVE to hear Believe in Me or If This is the End I would LOVE to hear Journey play. Both have a "Journey" vibe to them, of course with Jeff being so influenced by Journey (before he was their vocalist) it stands to reason that vibe would be there.

YES. They did covers of Jail House Rock, and call me silly, but SS has some tunes that fit the bill better than Elvis songs. SS rocks, fuck all of you.

I actually talked to Jeff about this. I told him If This Is The End, would be a killer Journey song. He told me that if they even contemplated redoing a solo/SS tune it would be either Believe In Me or Coming Home and that's it.Time will tel I guess.

Def not.

It's Journey I want to see and hear, not SoulSirkus.

I'd love for them to play Higher Place and Faith in the Heartland (FITH as opener) at the Clyde Auditorium when they play Glasgow on the 3rd March though.

I'd love to hear some SS but it depends on how long the show is..
A 90 minute concert seems rushed as it is.

I've been listening to these two lately thinking they should consider recording them for the next album. Not sure what Cain could contribute keyboard wise that would possibly be needed however.

I've been saying all along that "Believe In Me" would make a KILLER tune for the next album and a potential lead-off single...
Imagine the original with Jon throwing down some classic riffs on the Whale and even bigger background bombardments with Deen and Jon thrown in the mix...

They should go by the name Soul Sirkus.

They should play Soul Sirkus material, Journey material, Talisman material, and Bad English material.

They cant keep swapping lead singers, give everyone in the band a song to sing lead on and call themselves Journey.

Generations was a fu.....king Sirkus.
