Joe Montana and Steve Perry!

Postby bionic » Tue Dec 12, 2006 5:31 am

Not only have both guys shared the same stage i belive (was it a superbowl win in the 80's? ) but both have worn the number 16 shirt! Hey i may be a brit but i love NFL and the 49ers even though they are playing crap haha.
My point is this Joe Montana was one hell of a quarterback in his time,i am sure he can still throw a mean ball and is still pretty fit. Yet we know he is to old and past his prime to appear in the NFL,and so does he thats why he retired when he did.
Steve Perry was one hell of a singer in his time,i am sure he can still sing and is still in good shape. Yet we know he is past his prime and to old to play in Journey or even solo again, and so does he and thats why he has all but retired but he cant say it unlike Jo Montana!
He will always be my favourite singer and i am gutted i never saw him live, but how long can we wait hoping he may still have it or return,he is a singer who does not sing!!!, bit like Augeri haha(David Pack and Jeff Golub was an exception, but it was only a little part)
I just feel after the recent interviews like giving up hope he will do anything,i just wish he would say i cant do it anymore,i dont need reasons thats his buisness, then we could all move on instead of buliding up hopes only to have them dashed again.
I would love to be proven wrong but i am at point were i truly belive its over for him :?
Your thoughts?

Both guys were also known for not making it easy for their teams to go on w/ out him in the lead.

Ask Steve Young, circa 1992.

Huge Montana fan anyway, BTW.

I've moved on. Perry owes me no explanations on why he doesn't record his own stuff and release it. I just figure if he wants to surprise us someday, then I'll take a listen.

Actually Perry owes me no explanations about anything.

I do remember back in the day, him muttering something about Dwight "be tight" ____ fill in the last name, as it escapes me now.

And Augeri never did get that "monkey off his back", did he, 13? I think JSS will.

It is precisely Steve's inability to state he is retired that separates him from the likes of a Montana, Jordan, Sanders or in music a Grace Slick, or a Garth Brooks who all stated they are currently retired at one time or another. Hell, many people have stated that they are retired and have come back to make one last run. Nobody would fault Perry if he did that, and I for one would have more respect for him as a professional if he had done this and had no qualms about other members carrying on with the name Journey. His choice to retire, step-away, whatever you want to call it, is not what bothers me. It is the fact that he a.)he coldn't come out and say it, and b.) he had to put restricitions and conditions on others. Hell, why couldn't he have done it the way Greg did. Greg was a founding member and a rock and roll icon dating back to his days in Santana. Did Greg say don't continue using the name Journey with out me, hell he even helped them out by finding his own replacement (at least thats how one version of that story goes.)

What I don't understand is why does the guy have to say "I'm retired" if even he doesn't know if he will/wants to sing again. While I would love to hear a whole new CD, I'll take the bits and pieces or BG vocals over nothing at all. :)

Nah. No chance, because like Montana's end in SF, vocal chord troubles played the Leonard Marshall role on Augeri's voice, signaling the end of his career on the home team.

You may be right NIG, and if/when the old catalogue starts trashing JSS vocals.........he'll have the balls to tell Neal we are taking a f'ing break.

This is cool, and neither should the band owe explanations for continuing.

Good point. I think Augeri cared a bit too much about pleasing people, at least in the beginning. Being the FIRST person after Perry had to be a monumentally scary thing. After Arrival, Journey seemed to have nothing left creatively. The failure of Arrival, for whatever reason(s), drained the band past the point of no return. From then on, it was uninspired music and touring for dough. The difference with Jeff is this. He doesn't give a shit what people think. He is who he is and what you see is what you get. Creatively, he towers over Augeri. His catalog is as eclectic as the day is long. From pop to rock to metal to disco, the guy can cover it all. With Jeff, Journey can seemingly go in any direction they want. If mangaement can get a label, actually support the band and the CD is quality, they can again become successful. Just seems like to many "ifs" for the current management to handle.

These years ahead may be the last for the band lets hope Jeff can carry the band to new heights, maybe if they ever do call it a day Perry will come back for a few songs on the last ever date, now that would be sweet :)
