Maybe but we could give a shit WHEN it comes. Wake us up when they stop playing shows being Journey. Then I'll worry.

I don't expect Neal to publicly let loose on his feelings regarding the past eight years for some time.
However, Neal's interviews are usually anything but "politically correct".
Second to only Herbie, Neal tells it how it is.
Be it defaming Steve Perry, or divulging how he truly dislikes meeting fans, Neal isn't afraid to speak his mind.
This is either really admirable or massively stupid.
Either way, it makes for great reading.

Unless Journey produces new music and plays it in concert, they will have become truly passe.

This lineup just formed.
Even if Neal and Jeff have been writing (and they have been), why not give them some time to actually produce something?
You are condeming them to irrelevancy before they've even been given a fair shake.

More likely though, they will continue to do what they've done for the past 8 years or so, since Augeri signed on, proving beyond doubt that they belong to ...yesterday. :)

The course to nowhere undertaken for the past 8 years is a direct consequence of Augeri's failings.
Funny, where were you to cast stones then?

fred_journeyman wrote:The sad fact is that there are too many people on this board and other boards who either pander after Journey, or think they have all the answers about Journey. Who CARES if Journey make an announcement? It will be "politically correct" anyway. Who CARES if the interview ever gets posted? It will also be "politically correct." Who CARES if one of them blows their nose? It won't be politically correct, but no one will notice.

It doesn't matter because in the end, whatever is placed up here or elsewhere will become a source of interpretation, arguments, bias and all the rest and ultimately NONE of what's said here will matter.

I stopped caring a while ago. Unless Journey produces new music and plays it in concert, they will have become truly passe. Oh NOOOOO, I've repeated myself again! :D Who cares? This board and most other forums thrive on repetition. No one's immune and all participate, in spite of the fact that a few think they don't.

Crap, look at Journey - they've been repeating themselves for YEARS and yet people go "Whoo hooo! I'm going to another Journey concert to hear the same 12 tunes and I'm going to go as many times as possible this summer! Yeah baby!" It used to be "Augeri is the BEST! He's the bomb!" Now it's, "Whoo hoo, JSS is the BEST! He's the MAN!" yada, yada, yada. Yet it's the same music that was made famous by a frontman who helped CREATE the sound!

It's too funny for words...but I'll try to think of some words so that I can post something because checking in here over the past week or so, it's obvious that people ran out of things to say months ago. :D

My goodness, the things people here pick apart and argue about and debate...I mean at least Iran has chosen to "debate" something interesting like "Did the Holocaust REALLY happen?" Of course, they look like complete idiots as they try to negate actual history, but anyone with any semblance of intelligence knows where they're going with that one!

Hey, but let's talk about whether or not JSS can really hit the highs (he can't without straining) and if he'll really get Journey off the ground (no because Neal is too chicken to play anything new in concert) and will they produce new music (probably) and will it be played in concert (no), or whether or not Perry will record again (ask what's his name - he knows that Perry has been in the studio recording and in 2007 there will be blah, blah, blah) and all the rest of it.

Who CARES? Journey IS passe. There is NOTHING Journey can do to bring back their glory days. Nothing. The BEST that they can do is produce new music, play it in concert and hope that it "hits." More likely though, they will continue to do what they've done for the past 8 years or so, since Augeri signed on, proving beyond doubt that they belong to ...yesterday. :)

God, even Ritchie Blackmore is into something completely different than Deep Purple tunes...

sadly Fred... you are correct in all of the above.. lets hope for at least some new music, that a couple thousand of us may like to hear/buy/download!

Even though I AM AND WILL ALWAYS BE AN AUGERI SUPPORTER, I am ready for this to die away (tape gate, Augeri bashing). I was done (don't agree with how much was done), but it was done. I blame the WHOLE band and mgmt, not just Augeri. The band more so, since Augeri was to have some time off this year, but the toured anyway, knowing that had a sick lead singer, and knowing that they could pull some more "magic" from the speakers. They all should have said no we are taking some time off, but one person does not make a band.
As much as I would like to see Augeri in Journey, I know it is not going to happen, I will continue to be a Journey fan and still follow Augeri.
I think JSS will do good, if not great (still waiting on the first cd to pass judgment). I do have an issue with the language as posted by someone elese. Yes I know it is Rock-N-Roll, and can expect some cussing. But F this and F that with GD through in every sentence, then my Journey days (concert wise) are over. When I say them in Nashville this year, not one cuss word was said .
But it is best that the band moves on, and that the past be dropped. Journey needs to let the interviews go, make an announcement and go.
For those who on Augeri about wanting more money and holding things up, can you blame him. We do not know the circumstances behind tape gate, he may not have been to blame, it could have been do this or go home. We do not know, so I do not hold anything against him for wanting more money or back in. But coming back in although I would like, I think would be a bad move for the band, for now
I know some disagree with me, fine, it my opinion and you have your, but the verbally abusing each other for their opinion is ten times worse that tape gate, or any thing mgmt has screwed up. I stopped posting for a while (family time and health reasons), and it was great to be a way. The board has changed a lot of the past year, some for the good, but the fighting makes it hard to stay around, imagine how a newbie feels, they have to come in swinging, or get crapped on. And if the come in swinging, then they are a trouble maker to some.
The band needs to release something, just to settle this board down :D , give us something to talk about, because everything is speculation at this point, even if it is right guess-ERIC

2. If Steve Perry rejoining Journey is an imposibility continue with the current band and change the name. Backed by the vocals of Jeff Scott Soto & Deen Castronovo they could eaisly pull this off. On another 'assembly line' I used Velvet Revolver as an example as to what the members of 'Journey' could accomplish. I was basically told my example was bogus because Journey is a nursing home band, and Velvet Revolver is a younger generation band. I beg to differ:

Velvet Revolver's lead singer Scott Weiland was born in 1967
Velvet Revolver's lead guitaristin Slash was born in 1965
Velvet Revolver's Duff McKagen was born in 1964

Both Jeff Scott Soto and Deen Castronovo were born in 1965. These two (JSS & Deen) should be the main attraction and focus of the new band. Neal, Jonathan, and Ross should take a Carlos Santana type approach with their new band. This band should feature the vocal strengths and passion of Jeff and Deen.

If number one is not an option. The only choice for this band to not turn into a high paying Vegas Lounge act, or a warm up band is #2.

ALL the pieces are in place, if Steve Perry is no longer an option retire the name, and move on.

Steve Perry begged Neal not to fracture the Journey name. With tapegate and their current direction that is EXACTLY what Neal has done.

Great post Yogi...I'm with you all the way on both those options....

eric - agree with pretty much everything you posted.

As for the band members appearing under another name and just letting the name Journey expire, i can't see it ever happening whilst the name can still make money...which is probably for a good few more years yet. I can't imagine Neal dropping it until he has some other money spinner lined up, or until he decides the amount it's making is not worth the effort involved.

Now if Soul Sirkus had turned into a financially viable proposition things might be different.....

Soul Sirkus was Neals way of trying to save face after 'Planet Whatever' crashed and burned. Slash moved on to make gold with Velvet, and Sammy joined David Lee.

The Sirkus was thrown together and treated like an UGLY RED HEADED STEPCHILD.

It was less than a side project!!!

This group could be 100% viable and make a name for itself.

I can't comprehend that hardly anyone else sees that.

Journey will ONLY exist for the masses being fronted by Steve Perry.

This group could exist and thrive but not as Journey. As Journey they will only exist as a group playing 20 year old Steve Perry led Journey songs. They are a lounge act now.

They dont have to be!!!

What did I exaggerate??

I am 100% corrected on the ages of the players I named in Velvet Revolver and 'Journey'.

I am 100% correct of Soul Sirkus being a cheap spinoff of Planet Us.

Shi t, I believe it was thrown together at the last minute with Andrews help after Slash and Sammy bailed on Neal. Then Deen had to bail mid tour, because of an illness or injury and the group pretty much folded under the Journey contractual obligations.

To say Soul Sirkus failed is a wrong and a joke. They NEVER had a chance. Their own members didnt even give em a chance.

This group COULD make it today. They are MUCH better than both Santana & Velvet Revolver.

But they WONT ever make it with the name 'Journey'

P.S. The Revolver opened the door up again for the'Supergroup' ala Damn Yankees & Bad English

What type venues outside of California will they occupy without another supporting act???

Without another big act with them, they draw 2,500 tops in almost every city in every state in the U.S.

That makes them a lounge act.

Yeah but Matthew, he was nowhere as creative as Smitty was in general and if you compare the few tunes that had a drum track created by Smith and all the others by Londin, the difference is HUGE and very noticeable. I would have loved to have heard what Smith would have provided for all the tracks on ROR. It might have even made a difference is sales.

Fred- OF COURSE they're gonna make the announcement ( whenever they get around to it  ) PC!
What, do you expect them to come out with a statement like:
" Gee, we screwed up, Steve is a fake, and we just wanted to make money?????!!!!"

( ps- that's not what I think, this is just an example!! Keep the tomatoes to yourselves!)

But of course we all will read it, and probably dissect the hell out of it. Because that's what the people here are so good at. Basically, we all just want closure on the whole fiasco. And that's what the statement - however worded - will hopefully provide!

Since my PM's are now lighting the sky about my lounge act comment I will set one thing straight. By calling Styx names wont break my bones.

Styx by themselves IS also a lounge act. With other similiar groups they are a Butts & Guts tour extrodernar type of band.

I have seen them by themselves 3 times since 1999. Tops by themselves they drew 2,000 at the Free Willy Festival in San Antonio. The other two times they didnt break 1500.

With REO they drew between 5,000-10,000(3times)

With Journey & REO they drew 10,000-15,000(2 times)

With Bad Company they drew between 8,000-10,000( 1 time)

Hanson/Frampton 5,000- 8,000 (1 time)

By themselves STRICTLY lounge.

By PMing me and calling Styx names doesnt bother me. I agree with what most of you said!

If your going to make crazy ass statements, try and get your timeline correct. At the time of the Planet US talks/plans/demos Slash was already involved with Velvet Revolver and was replaced by Joe Satriani. Sammy did not leave to tour with David, he left to tour with Van Halen. I guess Joe Satriani had to try and "save face" as you claim Neal did, since he was also left behind. Also, if Sammy had his way, Soul Sirkus would have been the openers on that VH tour, but good old Edward would have none of that. What a bunch of crap.

Also, Velvet Revolver's long term success is still to be seen. IMO todays kids will not support a band long enough for said group to become legendary (ie. Zeppelin, Journey, Van Halen, etc). The youth today just don't support bands for long carreers like we did when we were young. Also, the self-destructive nature of the members of Revlover has to be considered also. The band could go on for 4 or 5 releases, or be gone before even a 2nd release is out.

With proper promotion Soul Sirkus may have had some success. Would it have been lasting? I don't think so.

That would be the ultimate Journey reunion, but it won't happen.
Although I am convinced that this scenario was already discussed at a management-lawyers level, the chances of SP rejoining the band are close to Zero, because of SO many reasons that can't be solved by attorneys...There are still things going on between SP,Schon and Cain that we will never know about,as is their private business, although these might be the main reasons that are keeping the classic Journeymen separated.

True,Jeff and Deen are the new blood, very talented, great voices and all,but Neal,Jon & Ross are what's left of the Journey "motor".They are the ones to decide the band's direction.
By bringing JSS in,I can see they were looking for someone who can "stand up and shout" (pun intended! ).
I agree that Journey needs a strong vocalist, who also has to own the stage and to control the audience.Looks like Jeff was already tested and I think he passed.
If Deen adds to the vocal work,it's a big plus, but I think the future Journey will put a zoom lens on JSS.

ALL the pieces are in place, if Steve Perry is no longer an option retire the name, and move on.

It's too late to change the name.Way too late.
Maybe they should've done that in 1998 and now, after 8 years maybe they would have been a renowned rock act...but that we'll never know. It's fiction.

So today and from now on,it has to be the name 'Journey' or nothing.

But they WONT ever make it with the name 'Journey'

P.S. The Revolver opened the door up again for the'Supergroup' ala Damn Yankees & Bad English

Couple of points of clarification here. Neal and JSS met at a NAMM show in LA. I really don't think Andrew had anything to do with it.

As I said before, Soul Sirkus was Sammy's first choice as openers for the VH tour. Eddie Van Halen black balled Sirkus, the reason is unknown, but some claim there is/was bad blood between Eddie and Neal, or that Eddie was afraid of being upstaged by Neal and Sirkus. All speculation as far as I know. This would have been the big break that Soul Sirkus needed followed by a nice marketing and promotions push, IMO.

And again just because you have a "supergroup" ( established players from other succesful acts) does not mean you are going to enjoy long term success. Bad English two releases and gone, Damn Yankees one release and gone, The Firm two releases and gone, Mr. Big - big only in Japan, Velvet Revolver one release and counting.

I really don't think it is the "Journey" name that hinders the band. It is a combination of the musical climate and an extreme lack (non existent) of promotion.

Now, I live in California, so I have not seen Journey play the "lounge" sites you describe they play everywhere else. Is there some place where tour attendance can be looked up for current and past tours? And also by location? I would really like to see this information.

Lastly, for all we know, maybe Journey is happy making the money they are doing the Greatest Hits touring. We as fans may not like it, but unfortunately we don't get a say. The only choice we have is whether to continue being fans or not.

Whether this was the reason or not, it definitely would've happened. Neal can now play Eddie under the table easily. Back in the day, they were both great guitarists but EVH hasn't learned anything new in years. He is now just a one-trick pony, in my opinion.

That has about as much possibility as Elvis joining Journey.

That's not going to happen. if it was, it would be called Soul Sirkus...and that band tanked in the US.

If number one is not an option. The only choice for this band to not turn into a high paying Vegas Lounge act, or a warm up band is #2.

...and #2 isn't going to happen either...and the statement above says what is left...which is basicaly what I said months ago. Within two tours, they will be playing the Styx circuit.

ALL the pieces are in place, if Steve Perry is no longer an option retire the name, and move on.

And, they'll be playing in bars to 500 people.

Steve Perry begged Neal not to fracture the Journey name. With tapegate and their current direction that is EXACTLY what Neal has done.

I don't agree with that term, fracturing the Journey name. I also don't agree that the blame is solely Neal's.

When Andrew made his last set of interviews, I made a comment that I wasn't expecting much out of them and really wasn't looking forward to them much. Did I read them? Yeah. Did I comment on them? Not as much as in the past.

I feel the same about this latest round. I'll probably read them. I'll probably comment on them more since I'm sure they'll be the talk of the forum(s) for months. But, I really don't expect much out of them.

Things have changed since Andrew broke the Perry/Augeri news 10yrs ago. It's all planned and thought out. It almost seems completely controled nowadays. I don't anticipate anything out of the ordinary or surprising to be said. Therefore, I really don't feel much excitement for a Journey interview any longer.

It's like the Perry Q/A...We mostly know what to expect before it's even posted.

Perry may have been a pain in the ass but Herbie kept the balance between Steve and Neal to keep the Journey machine on track.

That 'balance', as you call it, ended in 1985 when the band sided with Perry and over-ruled Herbie. At THAT point the "band" was fractured and the stone was cracked. Herbie knew what he was doing and could handle it - Perry didn't and couldn't.

As for Augeri. It IS different today. They make their money by TOURING. What's the point of Perry being in the band if he can't tour? People bitch about Augeri's problems and then I read something like this post...If Perry remained in the band NOTHING would have happened the past 8yrs.

So, tell us Monker, what exactly do you expect from the upcoming interviews? Are you willing to say Dean is right on the mark right now?

Like it or not, Slash's name draws more attention then ANYBODY in Soul Sirkus...including Neal and JSS. With Sammy Hagar, Planet US would have been a hit...but without him, they are nothing.

It's the same with Journey. With Journey Neal and the rest of the band have a hit touring band - for now. Without that name, they are nothing....and they know it.
