brywool wrote:Shania- VERY nice of you to say that. I sing better live than recording. I cannot get over the fact that my family is upstairs while I am recording so I rarely get a decent home vocal. If I ever do it where I can record it, I will send it to you. I have done it twice this xmas season live but have not been able to record it. oh well! Thanks again!
Bry,it would be really nice to have the song ,so please record it if you can!
You have any more shows coming up? Even if Christmas will pass,a good song and a good voice always make me happy,so please send it.Thanks! :)

About recording at home..I hear ya...I have a friend who tried to do that in the basement of his house, and even if he was pretty isolated and all,the simple thought of his family eating, sleeping, well, doing everything upstairs, kept him from focusing to the point where he started forgetting lyrics or even stopping in the middle of the track because one of his kids was yelling upstairs...!
He was at his wits ends,so although his home studio was state-of-the-art he said he decided to better pay for a studio in another city in order to get away from the too personal environment and record vocals properly, surrounded by tech guys, not by sweet grandma, nutty auntie and her 20 cats,ya know?

YUP! And when your neighbors make comments because of the guitars being too loud, that's a drag too! I used to record my guitars using a Zoom unit because it was quiet. For the Run Run Rudolph, I tried using my amp and the sound is SO much better, so now all my guitars will be loudly recorded. They're gonna love me!

Very nice Wally. U guys are great. It must be fun to see one of ur shows. Ur singer is great. Really nice voice w/some nice vibrato going on. Good drumming there too. I'm sure u could do some solos!

Thanks JROX. She's a fun singer to drum for, especially when she gets a couple shots of Cuervo in her. She had never been in a band before and one day she told us how bad our vocals were and she's had the job ever since. We wouldnt even draw half the people we do without her.

WOW!!!!! Landslide is a beautiful song, you truly do it justice!!! thanks for sharing this!!!! WOW !!!!!!!

Vicky says "thank ya'"!

That was a one-take live recording, just after she first learned the song. She's stronger and more confident with it now. Needless to say we do a bunch of Stevie/Mac tunes, and we are now working on a Mac tribute band (minus the cheesy-dressing-up-pretending-to-be-Fleetwood thing).

brywool wrote: BINGO!!! My problem is my jaw and toungue. Too much... going on there. I've found some excersises for loosening these up. Before I couldn't sing all at one volume. Had to belt the top parts out. In fact, some teachers preach this and it's just plain wrong. One famous coach I went to had me doing that and it toasted my voice within a few months of his lessons.
There should be no facial muscles involved, etc. You'll see singers do that, but it's mostly for the visual. If you're doing it 'right' you should be able to do it without facial musle involvement. That actually hinders what you're doing because it creates tension in the jaw and neck. For me, the jaw and the tongue thing are key to me being able to get more out of my voice as far as stamina goes. The ribs opening also has a lot to do with it and I'm still working on that. My best teacher was a little old man that used to make me sing with a stick in my mouth to keep the mouth open and to take the strain off the jaw. That was 20 years ago and I'm still trying to assimilate it.
It's a learning process. Also, to hit higher notes, you use less air. That is another one I'm still trying to assimilate.

Now, I DID hear that Perry didn't have a teacher and maybe one would've helped him. Have you guys heard that?

I think it's very tough if u get in the hang of bad habits to get out of them. I've heard a lot of people talk about that. They learn bad stuff from one coach & then struggle to unlearn. One guy I know actually quit singing w/his band for months so he could start from scratch.

Have u done any muscle massage for ur jaw & neck? One thing I remember was to grab ur tongue & pull it out over ur bottom teeth & while holding it say gah to scales. That can really help loosen the tongue, I found. For the jaw, pull it out gently several times to just beyond where it would hang. Hold it there, then do it again. It's important not to overdo it, just a few times till it feels loose. I used to get a lot of tension in my throat area when I was on a book tour speaking a lot & one person showed me how to massage it & that helped a lot too. I would put my index finger right about where my jaw meets my neck & push firmly, but gently, holding for about 2 seconds. I would kinda work my finger around different areas under there doing the same thing. That would really make me feel looser. Also, as dumb as it is to do, doing "brrrrr" sounds to scales really was relaxing & freeing & it gets easy when u go up high & frees the voice. Or at least, I thought so!

I wasn't told to use less air to go high, but to use the same amount, & about the same amount or even less than u use to speak. But if u can't easily manipulate & adduct those vocal cords, it's still hard to sing high & sound smooth, especially for a guy.

I don't like things about my voice either. Speaking or singing. But other people say "oh u have such a nice voice". When I would listen to tapes, I sounded much better than I thought I sounded. I used to wear an ear plug in one ear so I could hear a little of what other people heard.

I said it when you posted this back over the summer...You're a talented dude! Love your version of Lights and IBAWY. You have a bit of Perry's soul in both tracks! I think you and Castronovo should start the singing drummers tour!

This stuff is exactly right. Holding the tongue and doing the gee thing is one of them. Just curious, where'd you get that? I got that from a lesson with Mark Baxter. There's another one where you pull the jaw down and sing la gah. Great for 'freeing' up stuff. Those things have made me sing a lot better. I used to skip over those for some reason. Now I find that if I do them, my gig goes so much better.

So many different sources over the years. Long story. My dad was a singer & I sang a LOT w/him when I was a kid, he was pretty much my coach. He did a LOT of Sam Cooke type stuff. I did a lot of theatre, some musical. I got a lot of lead roles just b/c I could sing. I had coaches for projecting my stage voice. I'm a really small thin person & directors always wondered if I could bring it. Thing is, my singing voice is deeper, more chesty than my speaking voice. But theatre singing is theatre singing, know what I mean?

In high school, I knew a bunch of guys in a band. They wanted to really rock & do a really hard sound but no one was into it. They figured they needed a chick to bring an audience. Since I was dating one of them & always hanging out at rehearsals telling their singer he wasn't doing it right, they figured I'd do the trick. I actually got paid for singing in that band at 15 yrs of age! My dad died & I kinda lost interest in singing properly as he'd always been my coach & I started doing a lot of screaming. That messed up some of my theatre chances over the next few years so I started getting some lessons & hit a lot of teachers who wanted to train me in an "opera" way doing scales, scales, scales. I wasn't interested. I gave it up for a while, then got back into theatre in my mid-20s. We used to get done on stage & go sing karaoke. That was our way of letting loose. I'd let loose a bit & get everyone up dancing doing some Pat Benatar's Shadows Of The Night for example. I was so fed up of theatre singing where it's all so even keel kinda thing. There was this one coach there one nite & he really wanted to work w/me. He taught me a LOT of stuff I never knew. He had trained in the singing like speaking techniques. Really cool stuff.

I sang in another band for a while again w/a bunch of guys who wanted a chick but I didn't write & it was obvious, they wanted a singer who could write so we kinda went out separate ways. Then, I ended up doing some background vox & jingles for a while, as well as a little modelling (Sears catalogues & shit where u could be short). Meanwhile, I was always working in bars that had music & hanging out w/the singers talking technique.

I then wrote a book & did seminars & toured the country. That was when I REALLY needed some vox training. Talking for 4 hrs day after day is as bad as singing, if not worse. Also, the audience would keep u talking to them & signing for about 2 hrs afterwards. My agent would book me 5 freaking days straight. I was so hoarse sometimes & my throat would kill me. I started asking for around for a good coach again. One guy who really helped me had coached a speaker called Les Brown (black guy who did a lot of PBS stuff) that I was on tour w/for about a year. That coach was Joe Frey from Michigan. He helped a lot of speakers. In terms of relaxation, he was really the best. I couldn't have done that schedule w/out him.

Then, I got stalked by a crazy "fan" & gave that up too. Sometimes, I feel like singing again. I did do some piano bar stuff w/a friend who wanted a singer w/her about 5 yrs ago for a while. It was fun. But I got sick of all the Billy Joel/Bryan Adams ballads we were doing. Now, I just hang out w/a lot of singers who come thru work & I still learn bits & pieces from them. Maybe some day....
