Augeri's routine for warming up his voice was apparently very extensive.
He kept his dressing room at a certain humidity, he would jog, get a neck massage, leave showers running in his hotel room.
Drew once heard that Steve warmed up for TWO HOURS.

Since this was a morning performance, there was little chance of Augeri going through all that.
It all does seem a bit excessive, and I'm not sure how much of a difference it would have made.
I think nature was just taking its toll.
Some people are either born with *it* and others simply aren't.

Yep. I heard it mentioned (I think from Ross), that his hotel room was called 'The Jungle'.

Just listened to "Any Way You Want It" and it wasn't that bad.

Megafans of the group would notice the shortcomings of course. But someone flipping the channel that was a casual fan wouldn't have thought the performance was disgraceful or anything. I've heard major bands sound much worse on morning shows like that.

The way the band is mixed is what jumps out at me the most, as what I have the most problem with.

Not saying it's a great performance or even very good. But it is far from the disaster I was expecting based on what I read. DSB was probably the worst, AWYI the better sounding of the songs played.

At least it was live.

The difference now is they want have to settle for a mediocre performance, and you know Jeff will take over the show in a setting like that.

I think this performance was an outright disaster.
I can't imagine any unacquainted old school Journey fans being won over after seeing this.

I thought DSB was a horror show! As I said, Augeri tried his ass off to hit the notes, but he simply couldn't do it! Doesn't make him satan...He just doesn't have the range, necessary to sing this music, period, end of story!

Man, DSB made me cringe  . I don't think I have ever heard anything quite like him trying to hit those high notes toward the end.

Where are the wigglers? They don't have a leg to stand on watching this performance. Was he "sick" that day, too?

Man, no wonder they went to taped studio vocals if this is what they sounded like live!

Let's be fair here. AWYWI is the EASIEST Journey song to sing in the entire catalogue. I can hit those notes. I bet u could sing that, Ed. Give it a try.

I think Perry's renditions on "Captured" AND "GH Live" both leave something to be desired.
There is a reason why Augeri would have the crowd help him out on this one.
Not only to spur fan interaction, but because it is damn hard to sing.
Open Arms is easier.

Please stop with the Augeri is better than Perry because he never was and never will be and here is your proof. :D

One more thing, Perry sounded absolutely 100x's better on the white sox rally than this 2001 Augeri performance.
(hangs head in shame) :?

All the Perry bashing & the bashing of his fans for what? For this? Jesus Almighty! :?

This is one time I agree w/u wholeheartedly on every word. Here's a real singer:

I think the correct phrase is: Jesus Christ and Dumbo!!! Thanks to Deano for that one! 8)

And now that I've picked myself up off the floor, a HUGE thanks to JRox for my daily Perry fix!!

oh, man...sorry to say that was the worst DSB I've ever heard...*cringing* and that was when they FIRST started out in 2001! And, on national t.v.! I heard SA having probems like that in the 2005 concerts, but didn't know it went back so far.

And, for the lurkers: I have empathy but can't anybody see that there was a BIG PROBLEM??

I just listened to DSB and AWYWI. I must say it was way better than Higher Place. Listening to it more and more, it seems like the whole shin dig doesnt sound up to par. The music behind Steve A is weak and at times seems like SA's matching his voice with the music around him. I don't know and can't really tell since the quality isn't top notch. Either way he is nervous as fuck.

Thanks for putting that up, I had never seen it, or heard about it until recently.

I hate to disagree with you all, but I don't think its that bad really. Sure, Ross off key BG vox, Augeri had some bad moments, but over all it still turned out ok, and people were liking it, that is clear.

After listening to the clips, I then listened to one of Journey in Tokyo singing DSB (thanks Jeremy) then I thought the morning show sounded bad in comparison. But a comparisson between Augeri and Perry is just stupid anyway.

I have seen worse on the morning show to be honest.

I'm pumped about a JSS fronted Journey, but these clips made me feel sorry for Augeri and miss the excitement and enthusiasm we all had during those days, just to have our band back after all those years.

I have a copy of the performance. It just sucks - no two ways about it. I couldn't bear to watch it yet again. And, Neal's hair?

Something tells me that a live performance with Jeff will be 100% better :D

I didn't listen to it again. The memory is still fresh from when I saw it on TV the first time. I was mortified to be a Journey fan. I knew from day frggin' one that Augeri couldn't bring it live for very long, but that TV performance was just brutal. He just didn't have the pipes for it. I remember getting shit-canned by more than a few people for saying that back then. Dude was NEVER Journey material.

I dont know that Augeri has Asthma but if he does many Asthmatics will have more difficulty breathing in the early morning hours and as the day goes on there lungs tend to relax ,and they tend to breathe easier late in the day. If what has been said about Augeri's routine is true he shows classic signs of being asthmatic. If that is the case i have more respect for him now then i ever did before---i'm not giving him a pass on what happened ,but if he was able to pull off journey songs for any period of time, and he has this chronic illness its more than amazing that he was able to do what he did even if it was for only half his tenure.

oh, I'm sure with the skewed logic going on they'll just compare it to SP's White Sox version - anything to divert away from the obvious. (And, I remember reading how they reamed SP about that on another site during that time.) Sorry but this whole thing about SA being "thrown under the bus" by the band is laughable...why couldn't the guy stand up to the band and just say, NO! and leave - was there a hidden gun pointing at him from Neal's guitar? Please.
...and the preaching by the "self-righteous" fans is ridiculous considering some of the things they've written over the years!

Sorry Silverblue,i couldnt go by that statement ,let me explain; Why are all the inhalers coming into play ----i never personally saw him use an inhaler but so many people have been bringing this up as well and really it would have to be Steve's personal p.c.p. to tell me he doesnt have Asthma, which he couldn't do because of privacy laws so if someone tells you they have a friend that is a doctor or knows a doctor that said he doesnt have Asthma more than likely this would be a lie or speculation---ive personally caught a couple people over at bt lying about being a doctor, a nurse etc.,(again i dont know that Steve A has asthma or not but i can't rule it out with all the info that has been presented) remember it is the internet and you can be whoever you want here.

Thanks Jeremy!

Been a long time.....I watched the show that morning. I went on line later and expressed my disappointment. As I remember, one was not allowed to say ANYTHING negative about Augeri at that point and I was ripped apart. Yet I think some of those same folks are now coming forward and admitting what is was.

That said, I did come away loving the song Higher Place. Still do. Wonder, since I did not catch a show this summer, was it ever sang??

Hey PF, remember at the time the standard line on BT was that there was something wrong with the sound equipment or mix, or some other lame excuse?
