OT: Trans Siberian Orchestra - tomorrow night

Postby AR » Fri Dec 29, 2006 5:16 am

Just surprised my wife with 2 tix to TSO tomorrow night in Baltimore.
Dead center on the floor, row G (always pays to wait until just before showtime)

I've never seen them before but the stage show looks amazing.

Anyone gone to one of these shows?

Never seen a show, but would love to. You'll have to give a review, lol.

I did however see the light show to TSO here at MGM a couple weeks ago, lol.

Yeah AR, please let me know what you think. A friend from work goes every year and says it's great.

Maybe I'll check them out next time they come around.

Saw them last year around Christmas time. Great show, really enjoyed it. Don't expect it all to be heavy rockin guitarts though. They do that, but mostly it was a vocal showcase IMO. Still, if you like the CDs, I am pretty sure you will enjoy the show. They had a small little British gal playing the lead violin also at that time who was a real standout also. They do change musicians from tour to tour so I am not sure if she will be with them still this time around. I am not sure if Alex Skolnick is with them still, if so, great guitar player.

On a side note, I saw them at ARCO arena here in Sactown. ARCO is notorious for not being a venue with good acoustics. TSO, however, sounded clean and clear as a bell. I think their style of music lends to that. Saw Aerosmith at ARCO a few years back and the sound was terrible.

I am officially jealous. I am a huge fan but have never seen one of their shows. Had tickets for one a few years ago but had to cancel the trip due to bad weather.

The show here was pretty much sold out, but I knew to do the last minute Ticketmaster check and the seats I got are near perfect. I let you know what I think sometime late tomorrow night. Reports have it as a 2 1/2 hour show.

I'm jealous Ed. I wanted to go when they were in Salt Lake a few weeks ago but I had to work at the hospital that night and couldn't get out of it. While I was at the hospital some guy called to say that they were on their way back home from the concert and he thought his wife might be in labor, what should he do. I was so mad that he got to go and I didn't. So, I told him "Well, first things first....how was the concert?" He talked to me about the concert for like five min and he said it was specatular!! We then got back to his wife and I told him that he should probably stop at a hospital along the way-since we are about 3 hours from Salt Lake City, and at least have her checked.

They are playing the 1st Mariner Arena tomorrow which holds up to maybe 12,000 to 14,000 for concerts. All that was left was obstructed view over a month ago. Looks like they are going to be close to capacity. I lucked out getting the great seats I did.

If you're talking about Savatage, they are still together and touring and doing quite well, in my opinion.

Ok, first off, I knew that there would be rock music involved. Thought there might be some slow points but this was a METAL show. Holy shit I felt sorry for the blue hair types in the crowd!

Best stage show I have ever seen! Kiss meets Pink Floyd meets Queen. Lasers, strobe lights, pyro, SNOW, you name it. When we walked in and I saw how HUGE the light rigging was, I sort of knew what we were in for.

Hot chicks in tight black dresses.

Musically, a lot of it was Blackmore/Yngwie style guitar, or at least that's my best comparison. A lot of the music reminded me of Kotzev's Nostradmus record as well. Chris from Savatage was the master of ceremonies. Total rocker, kept waiting for him to drop an F-bomb. LOL. He wore a Ray Lewis jersey (ala JSS) during the encores.

The vocalists were tremendous. My wife commented that they substituted hot blondes as vocalists where there are usually children singing.

2 and 1/2 hours of bombast and hard rock with a Christmas theme. I will never miss it again this time of the year!

Caffery is a great guy. When the Savatage boards were still active, he interacted quite a bit there with the fans. Anyway, do you know who the other guitarist was? They usually have two. Besides that, they have had two different touring groups, one taking the west coast and the other covering the east coast dates. I believe that former Testement and Savatage guitarist Alex Skolnick and current Savatage guitarist and former Megadeth guitarist Al Pitrelli have been the two featured soloists. Pitrelli is my second favorite of all time behind Neal and I believe, in the past, that he was on the west coast tour but I don't recall for sure.

It's not really metal, per se. Hard rock, maybe, but not metal. Besides that, their music is very diverse, at least much more so than Mannheim Steamroller, for instance.

Anyway, anyone going to a TSO show not expecting to hear rock-n-roll must be stupid or just bought tickets because they heard the word "Orchestra".

I'm actually new to TSO's stuff, first time I heard one thought it was Steve Vai, lol.

I have seen some Rush stuff over there as well.
