David Lee Roth Speaks Out About Possible VH Tour

Postby Voyager » Wed Jan 03, 2007 9:29 pm

TMZ caught up with David Lee Roth in Manhattan last night, and he warned that a potential Van Halen reunion could result in a NASCAR-style wreck. Or a "Jerry Springer"-like brawl. Or even a "Knots Landing"-esque bitchfight!

Diamond Dave, looking dapper and well-coifed outside of Marquee, said that he's excited that Van Halen was nominated for a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but wondered whether the band would spontaneously combust if they reunited. For months, the band has hinted at a reunion, but Roth admitted in May that he hasn't spoken to guitarist Eddie Van Halen for almost two years.

"A Van Halen reunion is a lot like NASCAR -- are you there to see the winner or the crash?" mused Dave. "In this aspect, we're a lot closer to "Jerry Springer" meets "Knots Landing, which, to me, sells T-shirts." And probably tickets too.

I have to agree with Diamond Dave.Eddie called DLR a "loose cannon", but the way Eddie is acting,I hate to say that's he's the actual problem and has been for a while.Eddie has no clue how to run the band anymore, the music that he has been making is so experimental and out there, that not many people are gonna get into it, and we won't even get into the whole Wolfgang in/Mikey out thing.

This thing is definitely gonna be a wreck because we the fans, finally may have gotten the reunion weve always wanted, but it's not gonna be the magic we had hoped.

I get this feeling Dave is gonna surprise a lot of peeps w/ his cooperation and this thing will come off.
Wether or not he can force the Mikey issue is a different animal, but I think for this chance DLR will be willing to be a team player.

I think one of Dave's reasons for being reluctant to sign on to this tour was admitted in this interview: He is worried that the tour will crash in the middle of it. He knows that Eddie is in a very fragile state of mind, and the slightest disagreement could set the two against each other and stir some very deep conflicts. Dave was not kidding when he said this could be a Jerry Springer type of event. I would look for guitars and punches to be thrown on and off stage.

If Sammy and Eddie couldn't get along (on the last tour)...how in the hell are Eddie and Dave going to manage? Eddie has despised Dave for a long, long time. I don't see him keeping a lid on that for any length of time.

And besides, this re-union is about 10 years too late to be ass kickin'. Interesting? Sure. Kick ass? Don't see it. More like driving by a bad car wreck...you don't really want to look, but you can't help it.

"Despised Dave for a long, long time."

And you seem to be right. But all of us obviously being outsiders (hell, who isn't anyone w/out the last name Van Halen an outsider to the bros?), we can only make judgements on what we see, observe and what the Van Nepotisms say.

That said, they both went off that Dave had the audacity to act like it was a reuninion in '96 for the Best Of Vol I on stage for MTV. They were disgusted that he claimed "this is the first time we've been onstage together as a band in 12 years" or something to that effect.

Well what the hell was David Lee Roth SUPPOSED to think?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Hagar quits/is pink-slipped. The Van Paranoias ask him to come in and be the lead singer again on new songs that will go into worldwide release. A tour behind it is seemingly in the offing. The world is taking it for what it looked like, a Van Halen reuinion with Dave. they agree to appear as a band on MTV together and present.

But DLR is supposed to read their (whacky) minds and assume he's no more than an outsider, a temp, a hired gun and not think he's in the band?

So it was OK for everybody in the world and media to say dave was back, especially based on all the actions of the band leading up to MTV. A very sound, logical conclusion.

But Dave, he says it's good to be onstage together as a band and the VanSchitzoids go fucking nuclear about it?

To me it just seems like 2 assholes who strung a guy along and set him up to look very bad.

It's a separated wife and husband, who the wife out of the blue invites the estranged husband back into her bed and life. She moves him back into the house, and at Christmas dinner after the husband raises a toast saying how nice it is to be back together the wife throws him out in front of everyone screaming "WHO TOLD YOU WE WERE BACK TOGETHER>?!?!?!? YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE FOR DOING THAT!!!!!!!!!"

Well put, 13. I am surprised DLR would even go back to VH, unless he really needs the dough.

I agree...very well put. "Van Nepotisms"

Of course Dave needs the dough. Outside of the tour he did with Sammy several years ago, Dave is lucky to fill a thousand seats on his own. This VH re-union, if done right (and it won't be), could be the tour of the decade. And, I think Dave would really like the chance to get the old Van Halen back for one last time. In that, I feel he is genuine. There's unfinished business there. I'm betting for most of the last 20+ years since he quit Van Halen...Dave looks in the mirror and say's "What the fuck did I do that for?"

Well, Dave says he does....says one day he looked up and found the VanDuplicitousnesses simply ceased paying him royalties at one point for like, years.

No doubt Dave needs the money. If I were Dave, this tour isn't going to happen without a team of lawyers going over everything with a fine tooth comb. The Van Dumbass brothers are not to be trusted.

I always had the feeling they were back as a band but something happened that pissed Eddie and Al off so the "cover" was the 'this was not a reunion' thing.

Yep, but that would be the mystery behind-the-scenes thing we don't know of. The EXCUSE they gave for being dicks and kicking Dave out was that he had no right to say they were a band again.

Weak.

I agree. Look what they did to Mikey by shortchanging him on the last tour. If Dave doesn't get all the i's dotted and t's crossed before he commits to the tour, he could very likely get screwed.

I still can't believe how they treated one of the all-time nicest guys in the business. Don't you know, Voyager, he could sure tell some stories about the VH brothers.

He should probably write a book about it all. It would probably become a bestseller and make him more than what he would make on one final Van Wasted tour. I would buy a copy!

I'd buy a copy of the book for sure.I am still amazed that the Van Hallucinations seem to think that the band was always about them.DLR gave the early line up a cockiness and a swagger.Sammy gave them a singer and a sonwriter.Mikey was a backbone to the band and kept things together. But the way they have screwed over former members, it makes me wonder what they could have done to Gary.

Dave doesn't need the money at all.He at least has been out trying new things.I think the Van Halen brothers need Dave more than Dave needs them now.As much as theyd hate to admit it.The thing I also wanna know is who are they rehearsing with if Dave or Sammy isn't singing? I hope they aren't gonna bring out another lame duck singer.

Good question. Kind of reminds me of my brother's "band" when were kids. They never had a singer, just played in the basement, hoping and dreaming that one would magically appear.

Just one of the reasons that Mike is so cool. He never, ever talked shit on "the brothers"...even though we all know he could, and has every right to. Even after they shit all over him, he still kept his mouth shut. THAT is a loyal friend.
