So that explains, especially on the ROR boots, why everything suped up. Perry was trying to save his taxed vocally chords. Makes sense-ERIC

It makes the songs sound crappy for the most part, though. For most songs, the tempo is very important, in my opinion.

Awesome

Terrible drummer and bass player but still a good video.
Neal is all messed up look at his eyes.

Actually, Randy Jackson's a KILLER bass player. He's twice the bass player Ross is, and I like Ross. Probably why he played bass on After the Fall.
Michael Baird shouldn't have been allowed in the door. Terribly boring drummer. I can't believe Perry chose him over Sting's drummer Omar Hakiim.. Not to mention, either of them over Smith. Smith is a drum god.

And WHY did Perry always have his back to the audience? One of the greatest frontguys, but that always seemed kind of lame.

I agree. The groove goes out the window. A smarter thing to do would be to either tune the instruments down a half step (ala Van Halen) or lower the song keys. There are some Frontier boots that things are SO fast (worse than ROR) and the whole vibe is wrecked.

That's Funny. I watched that last night too. The first one blows it away. I DID laugh my ass off at the "Old Scrotum" bit or whatever when Knoxville was dressed as an old guy with his nads hanging out his shorts. THAT was funny. God, I was crying at that bit. The horse thing was nasty.

That's an interesting question...
IMO,he had a special connection with the rhythm of the drums,in fact I think he said once that for him the drums and the vocals must be in perfect synch.
That's why he loved to work with Smitty.
I guess that little dance that SP did in front of the drums was about that, from what I saw in various clips,he was having eye contact with Smith all the time.

Funny tho...In the unwritten stage conduct code, turning your back on the audience is a no-no...

Could be, but I distinctly remember concert reviews from the 80s that lambasted him for it. Not that the critics were ever nice to Journey...

Tuning down can ruin the song also. It's a mixed bag, in my opinion, but that would be a better option than speeding up the tempo. I've heard several boots of the FTLOSM tour where some of the tunes are tuned down and they still sound pretty good.

Dave-
Did they tune down or just drop the keys? I thought they lowered the keys. I also thought that accept where Perry's voice was shot that they still sounded good, not to mention there was a good groove.

From what I know, doing either can have a big effect on the song, depending on the key it's in. That being said, since I don't read music or really play guitar all that much, I can't really tell. I guess I just assumed they changed the keys on those tunes.

I believe they tuned down one half-step on the FTLOSM tour.

At the Bill Graham tribute, it looked like Neal was just playing in a lower key. (different position on the fretboard.)

But in person at the show is different than a boot. You get caught up in the show, and it is harder to tell that the song is faster, IMO anyway-ERIC

Spoken like a Journey frontman!!!! Journey's touring has always been relentless! Thanks for the knowledge on "hyperspeed", Jeff. That explains some of Perry's live recordings from 1983 I have. It never made much sense to me why he seemed to be flying through all the songs, and this is as good of an explanation as I've heard. I have to say that even if it does help one's voice, it still doesn't sound great to listen to.

Outdated etiquette in rock concerts. Perry wasn't and isn't the only one to do it.

It may just be a little too much adreneline-- a by product of performing live.

A little change up keeps things interesting anyway.

All I have to say is those keyboard/guitar looking things makes anyone that wears them look so GAY !! I am so glad people stopped using them. God they sucked and Cain looked so ummm lame in the vid with that little gay keytar dance.. Imho from every boot I have heard the ROR tour was total crap. Perry's voice was shot, songs way too fast with no groove, gay keytar dancing.. I bet there is a landfill somewhere filled with those damn things... They suck. Am I clear ?
