Seems to bear out the notion that humans will band together in the pursuit of a common interest and then destroy it from within with factional infighting.

I can empathize with Andrew about this. It reminds me of my feelings towards the end over at JERkNEE Inc..

This need to dominate a conversation, topic, thread, whatever by some personalities will not be changed by anything other than a strong moderating force.
In the same way one would remove an offensive guest from a dinner party at one's own home.

The "rub" comes from the fact that there is zero accountability, on the part of the offenders, towards the rest of the group.
There is so little "real" human / personal interaction that personal responsibility for one's words often takes a back seat to theatrics and histrionics.

If one has fallen into the trap of dehumanizing the others with who one does not agree, it is very easy to dismiss, ridicule, call names and generally show one's ass towards another, all in the name of IntarweB Forum Supremacy. It is exactly the same tactic the military uses before sending troops into battle. It's much easier to kill someone after reducing their humanity to that below oneself.

I think what most people don't realize is that "being able to say whatever you want" actually carries much more responsibility than the heavily moderated sites. Just because you can say something doesn't mean that you have to run around like some potty-mouthed high school jock. I like this board and really enjoy the entire site. It's just all the profanity and juvenile jabs that make no sense to me. People don't realize how bad they make themselves look when they can't make a decent post without foul language and punk attitudes. (But I must admit, whenever I need quite a good laugh I can always come here to read the drivel!)

I think I'll pontificate a bit on this subject.

I think all messageboards, like all real life communities, take on the nature of their inhabitants. The long time, and/or most active, residents naturally have more influence in the community. Not necessarily over the administration, but over the environment within the community.

For a long time on this board it was primarily a core group of posters, mostly guys, who had made this their home turf. They set the tone for the board community and were protective of their territory. That's normal, and not unlike the way it was with a few of us on the VH1 Journey and Perry boards. We were suspicious and sometimes down right rude when newbies or known detractors came in with points of view that we didn't think "fit in" with the community. It happens at Perryville, USPFC, BT and virtually every other long standing messageboard community to some degree depending on the nature of the board. Just like it would happen in a real life hometown or neighborhood if the lifestyle that the long standing residents had chosen was disrupted by someone new moving in.

Then when the VH1 boards went under some new, or previously less frequent, posters, including myself, started coming around here more. It was rough going at times and to be honest I experienced a lot of what Monker is talking about. At that time it was mostly having to do with Perry vs Augeri or Perry vs Journey. I had to take some time away now and then to let my bruises heal, but I still liked it too much(or maybe was just too damned stubborn) to completely give up on it. I've since learned that this "core group of long timers" are all great guys and I've had a lot of fun here with them, well, since I managed to somehow break out of the 'loon mold anyway. There is always a common ground where Journey is concerned if you're open minded enough to find it and meet someone halfway on it without drawing a line and daring them to cross it.

Then when tapegate hit there was a huge influx of people who were rightfully angry and passionate about it from one perspective or another. The core group, who were all supporters of Augeri, was divided and so were the Perry supporters that have found a home here. If it's discussions you like, this place was rife with them. Most of them pretty heated to be sure, but some of them were very deep and philosophical. Yes, there were a lot of attacks both against Augeri and against Deano. Some of that stuff got way out of hand, but I honestly don't see what Andrew could have done about it short of closing the board altogether. Any rules that Andrew had tried to enforce would have been seen as taking sides by one faction or the other. He did ask Deano to take it off the board, that's when the blog was started, but the rest of us brought it right back here because this is our community and we wanted to talk about it. We didn't want our board closed. We wanted a place where we were free to talk about it. The people at BT wanted to talk about it too, and since they couldn't do so on their board they came here. Andrew ultimately paid the price for allowing posters from all over the Journey internet community to come here and state their opinions on tapegate and the results gave this board a bad reputation. Now it's up to those of us who live in this community to repair the damage. He didn't get into this mess by himself and he shouldn't have to get out of it by himself.

I've said on here before, and I still say, that I don't much like the personal attacks, and the porn stuff isn't my cup of tea, but that's not all there is to this board. That's just one facet of what has become a very diverse community over the last few months. We've had a lot of good times here and with the new diversity I think there are going to be a lot more with differing points of view blending together to make some great discussions and undoubtedly some good dust ups.

I don't want this board to be just like the JourneyForums because this board has it's own identity and personality that I like for itself. I'm meeting some great new people, reuniting with some old acquaintances and hopefully contributing to some good discussions at the Forums. The discussions there may not be for everyone just like the edginess of MR isn't, but I think there's plenty of room for both forums and they can be enjoyed individually for their strong points.

I liked your entire post, but this is the paragraph that really has teeth. There is so much truth there, and I think whatever side of the fence you're standing on, you have to see that. I wasn't around when 'tapegate' broke, I didn't resume interest in Journey until after I found out that SA was replaced. But I've talked to a lot of people and I've read back, so I can see exactly what you are saying. What bugs me is that it appears that some of the same ones that were stirring the pot are some of the ones who go elsewhere and talk about how bad it is here.

We didn't want our board closed. We wanted a place where we were free to talk about it. The people at BT wanted to talk about it too, and since they couldn't do so on their board they came here. Andrew ultimately paid the price for allowing posters from all over the Journey internet community to come here and state their opinions on tapegate and the results gave this board a bad reputation. Now it's up to those of us who live in this community to repair the damage. He didn't get into this mess by himself and he shouldn't have to get out of it by himself.

I've said on here before, and I still say, that I don't much like the personal attacks, and the porn stuff isn't my cup of tea, but that's not all there is to this board. That's just one facet of what has become a very diverse community over the last few months. We've had a lot of good times here and with the new diversity I think there are going to be a lot more with differing points of view blending together to make some great discussions and undoubtedly some good dust ups.

I don't want this board to be just like the JourneyForums because this board has it's own identity and personality that I like for itself. I'm meeting some great new people, reuniting with some old acquaintances and hopefully contributing to some good discussions at the Forums. The discussions there may not be for everyone just like the edginess of MR isn't, but I think there's plenty of room for both forums and they can be enjoyed individually for their strong points.

I don't see any damage. This board rocked when Deano was holding court. More information was presented right here than anywhere else.

There's only a mess when you cave in to the naysayers that come on here and criticize. Ask yourselves this - of that group, how many will spend one dime on a Journey show? How many of them actually support the band?

Not many. They just want "intelligent discussion". There is only so much to discuss, it's all been done. When something important happens, the information gets here (usually first) and we do discuss it.

I enjoy MR for the friends I have made. The best part is coordinating get togethers for stuff like going to see Jeremey's Frontiers, the trip to see Journey in February in Florida in February, sharing rare live material, and dare I say it - exchanging relevant information about the band.

That applause is well deserved....Since Deano has decided not to post here except only occasionally, we do need another "LEADER", wish it was Deano, his satire and humor are sorely missed....but you guys(and you know who u are) are doing a good job of it...There is only so much u can discuss on a topic and some peeps really beat it to death until no one wants to discuss it any longer....

Of course we don't see any damage. We're (and I use the term 'we' loosely, 'cause I realize I'm only kinda on the fringes) part of that "mob mentality" that the naysayers complain about. We're having fun, talking to our friends, still kinda that 'clique' we've been talking about for a few days now. I personally don't want to see too much change.

I'm just trying to see it from Andrew's POV also though. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think what's hurting the most is not the people that come here and whine, it's the ones that take their whining away from here and spew it all over other websites. I think perhaps he's worried that it hurts his reputation and therefore his credibility in other areas of his personal and professional life. Maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am, because I would never want to feel personally responsible for that, because I am grateful for everything that I've gained since I came here.

Agreed, men and women have different interests (a good thing ). So I think both sides have to suck it up a little. Most of us women don't have a problem with you guys oogling over gorgeous gals like Shania Twain, etc......so let us oogle our gorgeous rockgods (AR, save your fat fetish for your mag collection ). I like the people on this site, you have everybody from a very conservative, quiet type personality to a brash in-your-face personality and a whole mix of characters in between. Some very funny folks here......I mean where else are you going to see a fighter pilot (Carlitto) moon an anal spelling teacher (Deano). I like the differing opinions and I wouldn't change a thing......except for the outright personal attacks.

Gotcha AR, the people here, the friends I've made, the sharing of information and music, and the community itself are what I like best here too. I wasn't talking about repairing the board. I meant helping Andrew repair the damage to his reputation that the results of tapegate erupting on this board caused. It wasn't just the regulars on this board that caused it. It was also the ones that came here to fight against the truth and attack the messengers. Now they've gone back to their respective messageboard homes and are still taking pot shots at Andrew, Dean and MR. This board healed it's wounds from within, but it's still under attack and Andrew's rep along with it.

What I was saying is that it's now up to those of us who live here to support Andrew in his efforts to make this more of an even playing field because that's what he wants and he is our leader.

There's plenty of room here for uploads/downloads, fan reviews, news and info about the band, and just shooting the shit, as well as discussion and more serious threads. No one has to participate in any thread that isn't to their particular taste. I like all of it. I go to the Forums for more discussions because I like them and there are more of them there. I can also get raunchy and throw around some shit as you well know.
