THANK GOD someone else has said this.

Jesus, compare the earliest Augeri boots the earliest JSS boots. Augeri BLOWS him away AND he sang all the tunes.
Things are different now of course, but when I hear Jeff's boots, I can't imagine what he'll be like down the road.

This doesn't mean I don't like Jss. I do like him. I just can't see him as a viable Journey singer and if he's straining
as he is now, what's going to happen later? Will his voice be ruined as well? Let's hope not. Let's hope Journey
changes direction vocally so that the new stuff isn't as high as the old stuff.

You heard a boot from ONE of 60 some concerts! How can you say he's always straining? Every singer is entitled to an off night!

As great as Steve Perry was, the amount of live material available isn't that much when you really think about it. The guy had off nights. Also, I think many naysayers are tied to the studio recordings and do not understand what live rock music is really all about. Not saying Perry wasn't phenonminal, but then there was no interenet and youtube to cover his every live note in each city all the time.

Jeff is under a microscope and it is completely unfair. The recordings I have heard show an amazing talent that Journey is EXTREMELY lucky to have in the year 2007. There is no one better suited to sing for this band.

yeah, what he said :)

I was at this show & it did have it's uncomfortable moments...even as they first walked on stage they didn't seem to be smiling or anything, but I attributed it to the first show of the tour & new stuff being done.
I remember he looked very unsure of himself & awkward with the guitar...it makes the audience feel uncomfortable. I think the guitar was unplugged & I think there were other guys running on the stage trying to fix stuff...I felt bad for him, plus his fly was down at some point, which didn't help him. I thought Butterfly sounded okay, different, I like the words more than the tune, but this boot doesn't sound as good as I remember. Does it look like he was about to laugh as he threw his head back after the tech came on stage? Are there any more of this show?

Wow, where did you find that schedule? I didn't know that info was even around.

I don't know how musicians tour like that. Journey had a hell of a schedule last year. If I had a job with a schedule like that, I'd cry. I'm lucky to get through 40 hours a week slinging luggage. Either I'm a lazy ass, or I just like my play time too much, I'm not sure which.

Easy with the approach thanks. Frank is allowed to have his say - and you your reply. i don't want anyone thinking they cannot express an opinion here - even when I don't agree with it (I dig JSS's raspier/more rock n roll vibe...if you didn't already know!)

WRONG- I cited one boot from 60 concerts.

I agree, every singer is entitled to an off night. But I have yet to hear anything 'AMAZING' with Journey.
I never said "he's always straining". I'm saying that in everything I've heard (and these are some of the same boots
that everybody here keeps raving about) he's straining.

Whatever, everybody loves the guy, it ain't gonna change and I don't want it to. I like him, I just don't think his range is right for Journey.
If it was, Deen wouldn't be doing any of the songs in the show.

by the way, I have

Hollywood Bowl
Charolette
Marysville
Clarkston
and another one and I forgot to make a note of where it's from

I wouldn't just make some comment like that if I'd heard one show. I just don't understand why everyone's falling all over themselves
over these same shows. I haven't seen him live, so I'm at a disadvantage. I'm just commenting on what I've HEARD. I still think the thing for Journey to do is leave the past behind and move ahead with songs tailored to Jss's range. I'm confident that NEW Journey will be good. I'm just not sold on old Journey tunes that I've heard live.

SOMEONE POST AN AMAZING BOOT FROM THE JSS SHOWS. I'd LOVE to hear it.

Nov. 5, 1981 The Summit. Houston, TX
Nov. 6, 1981 The Summit. Houston, TX
Nov. 7, 1981 Dallas, TX

MTV taped the Escape show on the 5th and 6th in Houston, and I saw them the next day in Dallas. Best concert I was ever at.

That schedule is incredible. They worked pretty damn hard.

Thanks for that.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

What the fuck are you smoking?

To say Augeri sounds amazing compared to Soto is refuckindiculous.

I can't say for certain on this song, but half the time at least on this particular show, Augeri's guitar wasn't even plugged in.

Some people blame the sound quality on it being a boot. I say Neal's guitar sounded great, even though it's a boot. That's all I'm gonna say..

I'm no expert, but when a live version of a concert is legitimately legally released, don't they do things to enhance and make better the sound quality before it is released? I don't get your point here?

Are you talking to me? If so, all I'm saying is Neal sounds great in this boot.. even though it's a boot.

Saint John,

Can you list the Augeri-era dates for comparison?

What I'm getting at is this: people have repeatedly commented about how SP was a prick and wouldn't use his voice to talk to people before and/or after his shows. Well, holy shit! With a workload like you've just posted I can see why!!!! It's a wonder he has a voice left at all!!! I had no earthly idea the number of shows they did. Seeing it listed like that certainly puts it into perspective. It's kinda sad, actually. Some people like to sit back and criticize Steve Perry for not wanting to sing, but we all know that he was the hardest working man on that stage night after night after night...I mean no offense to any of the rest of the band, but it's gotta be the truth.

I'd just like to see how SP and SA's tour schedules compare side-by-side. :|

Like I said earlier, the JSS shows are flying out constantly thanks to the technology.

The Perry shows are limited. And most that are out there are radio and TV broadcasts where he will be in his best light.

Not bashing Perry here at all. But if youtube and the internet had existed back in the day, he would have been caught with his pants down plenty.

Easy with the approach thanks. Frank is allowed to have his say - and you your reply. i don't want anyone thinking they cannot express an opinion here - even when I don't agree with it (I dig JSS's raspier/more rock n roll vibe...if you didn't already know!)

Listen gang...I've got a thick skin...it comes from years of liking Trevor Rabin over Steve Howe and getting blitzed by Yes fans....That and lots and lots of Donuts!

Seriously speaking. It's no secret I'm not convinced of JSS in this lineup yet. As it's been covered on our forums, JSS is very much a tenor, the 2 steves are high tenors. This means that both Perry and Augeri have a 'middle c' (I say that to suggest the middle of the vocal range, not a particular note) that's a bit higher than JSS's. JSS's comfort zone is a bit lower than the other two. Not opinion, pure scientific fact. Whether or not Augeri can currently reach his full upper range is an entirely different question, and a valid one right now.

The Reno boot, which is the only full length boot I've heard with JSS....is bad, real bad. JSS is struggling to hit notes all over it...which isn't surprising, since on certain journey songs, he's way out of his range. I suspect Reno was a bad night for him...as I've heard him sing the balls off of stuff as well....the videos that Andrew posted with his interviews are great examples.

It's just a valid point to put forth that Augeri, while of recent, has had very bad nights (when live)...JSS has em too!!

It's no surprise that Journey has adopted some 'other' songs in their live set. The inclusion of 'Message of Love' and 'Chain Reaction' are good examples, as they are less demanding songs for a lower voice.

Like I said, I remain unconvinced....perhaps a live show would do me good. Alas, the last time Journey passed through Long Island, they still had Augeri at the helm....so I've yet to see the band with JSS in person...so I'll have to base my current judgements on what I've heard.

I just listened to Coming Home from the Soul Sirkus CD....and that's probably a good indicator of where Journey will go with JSS......

time will tell.

Not saying Perry wasn't phenonminal, but then there was no internet and youtube to cover his every live note in each city all the time.

Jeff is under a microscope and it is completely unfair. The recordings I have heard show an amazing talent that Journey is EXTREMELY lucky to have in the year 2007. There is no one better suited to sing for this band.

How true this is AR. The Reno show wasn't THAT bad. Jeff sounded a little tired toward the end of the show and his voice was kind of raspy on some of the high notes but he still hit most of them pretty well. I would love to hear some of Perry's off nights. Maybe then a fair comparison could be made.

While for the most part I disagree, it's a well thought out post nonetheless. Some very good points in there.

Coming Home is a fine example of what the new Journey should sound like. Very Perry like but still JSS's stamp all over it. As far as the Reno boot, struggling to hit the notes and hitting them even with rasp sounds better to me than when Augeri's pitch would wobble all over the place. Just my take on it.

Yea, sure, great...helps to have youth on your side, ha ha! Have 'em try it now, hell, even I'd quit! :)

Also, I could do sing this with my eyes closed if it were material catered to MY voice/style/writing/ad libs.....singing Mr. P's stuff now, I don't have the liberties or luxuries to 'skirt' the way one does to get through some of the more difficult ones, I do my damndest to deliver them the way people know them because they are not my songs. Listen to any old recording, official or boot, as amazing as he sounds singing, he worked around certain things to preserve his voice night after night, still made the song song great but because he wrote his stuff, he could get away with it, same as Freddie Mercury did & most every other killer singer out there.

Again, to hell with excuses, just giving the facts on how it all works....sucks to be 41 sometimes, ha ha.

Actually I haven't found any of the Augeri-era tours other than the one currently on the Journey homepage. I believe the prior tours were fairly similar, though. The Frontiers tour is roughly 110 shows in 190 days.....simply amazing/psychotic/stupid/remarkable!!!!! I can't make up my mind which word is most appropriate. I do think Perry's voice should've been protected a bit more, though. I could see a "fab" band doing this to their lead singer, but Journey was MORE than established in the industry and Herbie should've been a bit wiser as it relates to Perry's vocal health and long range durability. And he has the nerve to say "I wouldn't piss down his throat if his heart was on fire." Fuck that fat, bitter, old hippy. He simply has no class.

How true this is AR. The Reno show wasn't THAT bad. Thanks. Just saying what I believe to be true.

My collection of live shows from many bands (not just Journey) is enlightening. Live rock isn't always perfect, and it shouldn't be.

As I have said, the earlier incarnation of Journey was not taped every night and did not have nearly every single performance widely available on the internet.

I enjoy being able to get all these shows, but am disappointed in fans that rip select nights apart. I just understand it all better. I have so many shows from so many bands, that I have literally heard it all - both the good and the not so good.

Whatever, everybody loves the guy, it ain't gonna change and I don't want it to. I like him, I just don't think his range is right for Journey.
If it was, Deen wouldn't be doing any of the songs in the show.
How many times must it be mentioned? The reason Deen is still singing now is because he got used to it on the past tours & now enjoys it as well the fans do....has NOTHING to do with me not being able to do everything (as I have on occasions Deen was under the weather), it has everything to do with the fact that his participation is now a vital part of the band, of the show, & who am I to come & say 'ok, your new singer is here, step aside, I'll be handling all the vocals now'....good try, but no cigar!

Some very good points by both of you. Just to add one other thing. When you have an off night and it's your OWN material, it's masked MUCH easier, but when you have an off night and it's NOT your material and natural range, it can be disastrous....not to mention easily audible. JSS did a fine job covering material on such short notice. That's SOME catalog to get thrown into the fire to sing. Augeri had months to prepare.....Soto had days.

Ha ha, no cigar for you either...we put Chain & Message because they're fun to do & after screwing around with MANY songs at sound checks, we experimented with adding/deleting things based on what got the corwds off....much of the obscure stuff left them looking at us like we all had 3 heads! Every day, we toyed with things like La Do Da, Line Of Fire, Where Were You, etc., only omitting them because we knew they'd go over like a lead balloon....try harder next time for the reasons we do things or how we think :)

I just listened to Coming Home from the Soul Sirkus CD....and that's probably a good indicator of where Journey will go with JSS......

time will tell.

YUP. You're handling it with class. Don't rock the boat. We don't need it tipping over again!! :D Keep up the great work. Can't please them all.

Every day, we toyed with things like La Do Da, Line Of Fire, Where Were You, etc., only omitting them because we knew they'd go over like a lead balloon....try harder next time for the reasons we do things or how we think :)
