So many Rolling Stone magazine types only give credit to the Led Zep's, The Who, Santana, Cream, and the bands that came in or just after the Woodstock era. Journey are looked down upon by that crowd. Very few exceptions to that in the voting we have seen.
Not my feelings of course, but it proves my point on all the HOF talk.
I agree. However, I think it's more expanded than that. They don't just cater to the woodstock era bands.... The voters look favorably on groups like Blondie, REM, U2, etc. You know, the new wave or the condescending 'we came out of NYC' rock.
The fact of the matter is that AOR music, in general, will never get recognition by the HOF. VH got in because the HOF would look rediculous not offering VH a spot, given EVH's contribution to rock guitar. However, if you recall, they made VH wait 3-4 years before actually getting the nod. Meanwhile, groups like Tom Petty, The Clash, U2, REM, etc get in on the very first or second year of elgibility. The music press is still very much packed with either old gaurd elite that protect the woodstock era legacy with a fierce animosity....or real young wankers that never cared about anything earlier than Kurt Cobain and the era of sludge crap. Protectors of anything 80s is very much missing in today's music press.
They are very much biased against AOR music. As sad as this sounds, I think the only way Journey will get even a minutes thought about a Hall Of Fame nod, is if there is an opportunity to bring Perry back into the fold somehow. It might be a coincidence, but VH got their nod when serious talk of a reunion with Roth started to take shape.
Also, given how Cherone got shunned from the entry (and I suspect that has alot to do with record sales)...If Journey does get the nod, you'll probably see Deen, Augeri and JSS get excluded from any nod...and the main recognition slapped on Perry, Schon, Cain, Rolie, Valory and Smith.
