Higher Place & The Top 5 '98-'05

Postby Red13JoePa » Fri Jan 26, 2007 6:52 am

Fairly certain this thread's doomed to be about as popular here as the Baby Ruth was in the pool in CaddyShack.
Open season for the Assassins and Loons.

So be it.
For those of us in the leper colony (Not the Augeri DriveByShooters, though. They don't reside here anyway) who still can't help but like the studio material from '98-'05 I'd like an answer.
I was listening to Higher Place for the first time in a while and damn if that thing does not STILL rank among my top 10 any-era Journey tracks. In addition to confirming that the too-loud keys, the by-numbers live ending (instead of the abruptly dramamtic brilliance of the Arrival version) and Augeri not sticking to subtle vocal delivery differences he uses in the studio version, and Neal doing 2 whawha parts instead of just ONE in the first mini solo all conspire to ruin live renditions of this song (something that bugs the hell out of me and TheNobleCause also), I hit on all the hooks and parts I love that make this song great to me.

The beginning with the atmospheric guitars intro, the little helicopter-like buzzing sound followed by Neal bending that one high note up and down on the wah wha bar, Castronovo coming in thumping on the kick pedals, Valory appearing later with an absolutely killer bass tone, Cain coming in with SUBTLE QUIET keys, a powehouse and nuanced vocal by Augeri ("ooooo and I tryHHHHIIIIIIIGGGHHHH!!!!") great bg vox, an Augeri/Castronovo harmony in the bridge when they sound face-to-face in the same mic, urgent solos and filthy rythym and leads by Neal and the ending with Augeri singing the "Forget what was....".part over a terrific and moving outro solo by Neal and that sudden ending that comes out of the blue with all 5 members signing that word "...this TTIIMMMEEE!!!" at top register.....followed by the 4 note Neal riff and silence...

What a song.

Can I have your top 5 from '98-'05:

I have

The Place In Your Heart
Faith In The Heartland
The Time
Higher Place
Remember Me

Thanks for reading, see you all on page 2 of the boards in about 90 minutes.

Although my all time fave Journey songs are placed in the Classic Era,I cannot deny the quality and the beauty of a few '98 - '05 tunes.
Times change, singers change, but a good song is a good song. :) At least that's what I think of the following 5:

Higher Place
Live and Breathe
The Place In Your heart
A Better Life

You, Madamme, have an open mind.

I don't care what they say about you. :P

Oh, and BTW, your #5 has just set you up on a batting tee, and it is a good song.

Faith in the Heartland=one of the best Journey songs ever! I really hope they sing this with JSS, but sounds like they won't...they should though. I could see this used in the next Blue Angels video, perfect fit.

Better Life=his voice is raspy and honest. If they ever do another "knight in shining armor" type movie, this would be the perfect tune.

Lots rolling with Faith In The Heartland.
One of my favorite comments ever was the late great Amaron or some other self-banished exile who we'll not soon forget echoed my feelings before the sounds of the song were even a glint in our ears when I first laid eyes on the title of that song (on this site for me), my first thought was "Oh no."

So very true and yet the song ended up kicking tons of ass allaying all my fears of triteness. 8)

A Better Life
Never Too Late
We Will Meet Again
Loved By You
Walking Away From The Edge

Either of the last two could be swapped out for Higher Place, depending on the day and my mood.

I Hear ya.

Remember Me can bumped off the bubble for me by OOHW or Every Generation (a goddam Schon/Cain paino/axe extravaganza) at given times. Sometimes the bluesy-Zep feel driven by Cain's killer Hammond outro on Livin' To Do creeps in, then I kick it right out for the mortal cheese sin of having a 'postrophe in its title.

Not necessarily in order...
  • Remember Me
  • Higher Place
  • Livin' to Do
  • World Gone Wild
  • Faith in the Heartland

"Walking Away from the Edge" could trade spots with "Remember Me". Either way, any of these songs are as good as the rest of Journey's back catalogue, in my opinion.

All three of those are great songs, no doubt. I think EG gets a bad rap sometimes 'cause of the voice, but I like it. Livin' To Do is made more powerful by the story behind it's writing, I think. Hearing that one live was definitely a highlight of my Journey concert-attending history, even if only 10% of the crowd appreciated it.

I absolutely think EG is unjustly tarred & feathered due to the different singer.

Good Question...

Postby NCscarab » Fri Jan 26, 2007 9:07 am

Here's mine...

Nothin Comes Close....this is just a killer track because it sounds a little rough around the edges and rocks!

We Will Meet Again...I just like the story within the lyrics and still think this would have been an awesome set closer

Beyond The Clouds...nice song

A Better Life...even though this song doesn't do his voice justice , I just love to hear Deen sing

In Self Defense...yeah, technically this song is from much earlier ( Schon/Hammer) but it rocks !!

Higher Place is a superb song. I litrally heard that track out of nowhere in 2000 having laid off Journey since TBF which seemed a little rudderless. It made me buy the album and realise there was life after Perry at the time. Its a belter!
