well, you know Prince. Probably didn't wanna get his hair wet!
The ONLY guy that could pull off that look. He's got the coolest clothes. Probably a hell of a tailoring bill!

You'd have to pull Apalonia out of church. Born again (what a shame! ;) )

That MIGHT'VE been Sheila drumming for Prince at the Superbowl. Not sure. I saw her in Ringo's all starr band a few years ago.
She STOLE the show. Awesome stage presence.

And I think a major contribution to his fantastic show was that he was dressed decently...as a front man should be.
He wasn't wearing cruddy-looking jeans and a tee-shirt, was he?. <wink wink, nudge nudge, hint hint>

Pretty cool. Prince teases the press by acting like he's gonna take a question - then slays 'em.

Not sure JSS needs a suit. And no, he doesn't need to look like Perry or Rolie, and definitely NOT Augeri. But I do think that Journey's frontman needs to look a little more classy and sophisticated than...say, Nickleback or Timberlake.

Btw, I think Prince's choice of pastel blue & orange were dead-on perfect for Dolphin's Stadium. It's that specific attention to detail that sets him apart from your average performer. And I think it all ties in to the psychologoy of a rock show. Because he looked as good (read: colourful and classy) as he did, I'm sure that most people thought the show was better than it really was. Think about it. We didn't see the rain and we didn't really pay attn to the wet stage. All we saw was him and his image. (And thank God, he can still play & sing too.)

I loved the performance, but wondered the same thing. For some reason I thought he might do a James Brown tune, as a tribute or something. I was surprised at Proud Mary and the Foo Fighters cover.

Never a big fan here either. Did/do like some of his more funk stuff.

That said, I have to agree with most here, best Super Bowl Half-Time performance in many, many years. I don't recall a better one in quite a long while.

I also like the fact that we finally got an American act for half time of "America's game". Just my opinion, it should always be an American act. Not that I disliked McCartney of U2. Just doesn't fit in my opinion.

Great show by Prince though.

I thought it was great and the graphics leading up were awesome.I remember reading years ago that Prince and his music were way beyond our time and that was in the 80's.The article read that he had mountains of music he had wrote still to do.They called him a musical genius. And he was't afraid to stay in the pouring rain and perform! BRAVO!

Prince did an awesome job, and it was definitely live --- at least the vocals and guitar work was. The rest could have very well been taped, but for the case of a half time Super Bowl show, that is to be expected. And....singing Purple Rain in the rain was an obvious no-brainer!

I'm surpised he didn't sing pussy control! j/k

Prince absolutely rocked!
Loved his guitar tones, glad the
studio fucks really brought it up in the mix!
And who cares what he played???
At least it was LIVE!

BTW, anyone else hear about how the
usual conservative, churchy folks are upset
with Prince's one guitar move, a signature move at that,
where it's basically a "Jack-Off" of the neck???
GIVE ME A FUCKIN' BREAK!
He's been doing that move forever.
Stupid fucks are comparing that to Janet's
40 year-old titty floppin' out.

Some people...

I hadn't heard that! That is just ridiculous to compare that to Janet's malfunction! They have the problem if they even noticed that, and interpreted it that way. Where are their minds?

To each his/her own, I guess...
But if you can't see the pure genius that Prince
truly is then you are missing out.
As for his guitar skils, you are REALLY missing it.

If you can find it, find last year's or the year before's
Hall of Fame Jam (The year George Harrison was inducted).
He stole the fucking show.

Carlitto, I found that video on YouTube and I was electrified!! How did he get under my radar?? I haven't been drawn in by someone like this since I discovered Jimi Hendrix for myself and my jaw is still on the floor after watching him play the drums on one of his other songs!

Oh, I must have been mistaken...if Schon says he's great (did he?) I must like him. He has written some goods songs, but why doesn't he keep any good ones for himself? He is talented, I don't dispute it. I just won't put him on the same list as Schon for an axeman, and he is an energetic performer, but the homoerotic stuff doesnt float my boat.

PS. Why would I see him in concert when I hate his songs????

Prince was slammin'! That was without a doubt the best SB performance I've ever seen. He's one of those "once in a lifetime" legends that you should just consider yourself lucky to have witnessed. He's our generation's James Brown, I guess you'd say. I know I've admired him since i was a little kid.

I seem to recall a story about Prince calling Jonathan re: the Purple Rain outro chord progression. It had an uncanny resemblance to "Faithfully" and he apparently called to say "Forgive me, I've made a mistake". Can anyone back me up on this?

Quote from Neal in the July 2000 UK edition of Classic Rock, regarding Faithfully:

“It’s funny, that song has often been compared to Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ and it even went so far as someone from his camp calling our management to find out if we were gonna sue him!"

Listening to Howard Stern this morning and Fred Norris made allegations that Prince's performance may have been something less than "live". They are supposed to talk about it more later. My brother had the same suspicions. I did not see it so can't comment. Just relaying what I just heard.

Was he playing guitar in the rain and not undercover?

so you dont like him...thats cool, thats your opinion...just saying ...he is very highly reguarded by other musicians....and have you seen some of those jam videos where he plays?....like Carlitto said....he smokes everyone else. I have all his cd's and have followed his career since 83......while many of his songs are very sexual, there are many that are spiritual.....and he is definitely heterosexual....he is just a very passionate person and artist and freely expresses it in his music. In his symbol, his look and his manner he makes a statement that he is aware that we all have 2 sides and that men also have a female side and that he is in touch with his and embraces it...but he's not a homosexual. He also doesnt show off his guitar skills to a full extent and record jams or too many solo stretchs...I dont think he cares that much about it and doesnt try to show off. ....just wants to make the kind of music he wants to make and help others out along the way and give back. Not saying you have to like him...you dont.....but he is a musical genuis and the definition of an artist. 8)

i only like a handful of his songs as well, the early ones, guys like him shine live where the guitar is loud and being played,, thats not sometimes evident on his albums.. his guitar style is penatonic/diatonic.. well what else is there   , i would put that purple rain solo down as one of the most moving ive ever heard,,

That's absolutely true and I remember reading that and going "A-ha!"... :o ...For years I had the feeling that "Purple Rain" reminded me of a song, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

A little more back up on Spike's quote, from a radio interview that Steve,Jon and Neal did in Pittsburg back in 1996:

"Jon: Well they always say that, you know, imitation is the best form of flattery so
Steve: Yeah that's true, that true.
Jon: It's kind of flattering when like Prince I mean he
Vicki: Prince
Steve: Oh Yeah
Jon: He, he called up he took the chords from "Faithfully" and put em' in "Purple Rain" and didn't realize it until you know, he heard our song and then his manager called up and said jeez, Prince is awfully sorry but um um
DJ: And he'll pay you so don't worry about it
Steve: Listen, listen, listen to this, the last chords of "Purple Rain, Purple Rain(Sung w/guitar)" which is the end of "Faithfully," just so you know.
DJ: You guys do it better. They're still breathing heavy in here because of you guys.
Steve: That was "Faithfully," okay. But he asked us yeah.
Jon: That was very nice of him to call.
Steve: He called and says "Forgive me I've made a mistake."
Jon: And we said good luck, have a hit."

Enjoy, for all the new converts. Love the song, but NO man should be dressed like in this video! I was told that Prince is in need of a hip replacement and that is why he didn't show us his signature moves during the Superbowl performance.
