We Are The World

Postby ohsherrie » Sun Feb 11, 2007 4:47 am

I was just going through some video tapes looking for something and ran up on the making of We Are The World show that was aired to promote it. It was so great seeing all those people at the height of their careers all together and proving why they were at the top of the charts at that time.

I remember seeing an interview with Lionel Richie at the time where he was asked how they chose who to invite to participate. He said they just started at the top of the charts and went down making calls. He also said that Steve Perry called him the next day still emotionally charged and aked him if they had really done what he thought they had, then they both broke down crying.

It's still moving to watch today.

It made me wonder if you could even get that many people from today's charts with that much talent.

Sherrie,

With the "talent" that they have out there, I sincerely doubt it. Since looks are more in than talent.

I say they do a "Part 2." It could be for Colombia. This way they could raise enough money to get Fyre Wyngz's in-laws running water, some toilet seats, Deep Woods Off, and the internet. Maybe they could do "We Are The World" set to Latin Rhythms.

An interesting fact about the song...

The part where Willie Nelson sings...

As God has shown us by turning stone to bread

I assume the reference is supposed to be from the Bible but God never turned stone to bread in the Bible. In the New Testement, Jesus was tempted by Satan to turn stone to bread but refused to do so.

I know Dave. I took it as being meant to say that mankind had to help themselves because God wouldn't turn stone to bread, but instead taught us to love and help each other. Just my secular, liberal opinion.

maybe by todays standards of these record companys owned by soft drink companys and putting out non artistic garbage, the meaning would be that the record companies play the God role , the stone is the music and the bread is the "Amighty" dollar... hehehehehehehehehhe,, im going back to the trailor....

Watch the metal version of we are the world called hear n aid. Neil is on it with true rockers like Dio and Geoff Tate, etc. Quality stuff. Leave it to Steve Perry to be with Cyndi Lauper and whoever else was popular at the time. Neil stuck to his guns and kept it rockin' We Are the World was GAY. Why feed Africa - They live in a desert "Go Where There's Food" - Sam Kinison Bruce Springsteen was on We Are The World. If he cared so much donate more than half is bank account to it. I make a measley $20 an hr and do not want Sucksteen or Tom Cruise telling me how to spend my hard earned cash

I'm sure it couldn't be recreated Rick. We, as a culture, have the "world condition" as part of our everyday lives now. That wasn't the case in the comparatively innocent time when WATW was done.

Even though the emotion and commitment of the people who participated at the time was moving to me, I was left thinking about the comparison between the talent pool then in top 40 music as compared to now.

good thoughts... Also there is some talent now, if a creator like Quincy Jones came on board...it could work--as long as the egos were in check...

I'd be interested to see who he would choose now and compare them to the ones they chose then.

Based on the Grammies last night, I'd say there's still an amazing pool of talent out there. Great vocal performances by most everyone....I'd say they definitely could round out a WATW-type ensemble nowadays, though it'd be old hat in 2007. That sort of gimmick is pretty wore out.
