Elvis, Marilyn, Madonna, and.....Steve Perry??

Postby TRAGChick » Mon Feb 12, 2007 10:51 am

I just saw a thing on YouTube with "Evolution" ~ a Journey tribute band:

here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he8KcC7MBTE

It got me thinking:

Has that era of Journey - with Steve P. at the helm - gone the way of "impersonators", such as those I've listed above??

Seriously - does that give respect to or hinder the whole genre of Journey's music...and Steve Perry, as a Singer?

I'd love to read your thoughts on this....and Lora & Cyndy...if you're out there:

What do YOU GUYS think of this?

Nora, that's a seriously interesting question. I'm going to have to give it more thought, but it has definitely provoked thought for me.

Right off hand, I'm thinking that for Steve's sake I hope he is that iconic, but for Journey's and Jeff's sake it may not be all that good. :? Wow, like I said, thought provoking.

Good thread idea. I hope lots of people give us some input.

Personally, I'll stick with the real deal. The real deal revolves around Neal.

As for the respect or hinder question.. Hmmm. I'd have to go with respect, as Evolution doesn't make a mockery of Journey in any way. I believe they have full respect for the band named Journey.

Y'know....people that just "stand out", are unique (in their own way) and are memorable (for good and/or bad)....that's why I named Elvis, Marilyn, and Madonna.

i love it, i call it respect.. i have a good friend starting a Cheap Trick tribute band,, he loves the music , people want to re-live their younger days,, who else will play elvis songs? an elvis impersonator..it just goes to show how important our band, journey is to its fans, a very very diversified group at that ,, we talk about it , play it,, and i would dig on seeing a band cover those tunes..

Well, there it is.. respect! There's a low chance of my seeing Evolution, but I do respect their efforts.

 Ever seen him live? After the first moments of shock, you start enjoying the show.
However,it IS scary the way he emulates Escape-Perry and you start wondering how many hours has he spent watching SP/Journey recordings or in the mirror to reach that "cloning" level....

On topic,I think it's respect what these tribute bands/singers are paying.
Imitation is a form of flattery,so I guess it's their way to say how much they admire & love the originals.Plus they feel like re-living the good old times and give that chance to the people as well. 8)
