He's been known to post here fairly close to showtime before, Kim.

True that NIG, doesn't take him long to go from Computergeek to Superfrontman......all he needs is a few minutes and a phonebooth.

Tuning down, I tend to use more of my 'real' voice instead of 'head' voice on the higher notes. perry had the best head voice in the business which one uses for all the high register stuff. Using more real voice actually tired me more than usual. We're going back tonight to regular tuning as it will actually help me more than hinder.

Head voice for those who don't know is the high register in your voice between real & falsetto, say it's like a strong, fuller falsetto compared to the Bee Gees or Leo Sayer which is more the lighter singing. It's much easier to sing the high notes in head voice than pushing them with real voice which is what I was used to doing on all my past tours, took me a bit to realize I had to switch it up for the sake of how the songs sound as well as my health

There you have it, more surprises in store tonight, can't wait!!

JSS

Wow. Whoda thunk. Thanks for letting us know how it went. I totally understand what you're saying.

I agree completely with these excerpts from Mike's post. I honestly don't think there would have been as big a division in the fanbase if they'd gone with Jeff to begin with. There would have been almost as much in the beginning, but Jeff would have won a lot of us over in short order. He's just too damned good to be against him for long.

[quote="JSS"]We're giving it a go on this Euro tour, actually today is the 1st day of trying them out a half step down...u heard it here 1st before the muzoids of the board come on & make attention to it. It is a tough schedule out of the shoot here, 11 shows in the 1st 15 days, so we're giving it a go to see if we're comfortable with it...I like the songs in the original keys personally but I am accustomed to my solo albums & Talisman tuned down so it will be interesting, honestly, the songs are still high ,we'll see how much easier/difficult they are comparitively speaking.

It's a tough schedule you say???? Journey's been playing THAT SAME schedule for years now, without tuning down.

It's different now isn't it??? You're not opening for Def Leppard anymore, playing a 70 minute set with Deen and Jon singing! "Right out of the shoot" you have to tune 1/2 step down??

First of all - chill..
If you read back - I believe it has been explained. Its a tough set for anyone - it has fucked up 2 singers voices already after years of touring. Not to mention as you get older (sometimes) your vocal range can shorten. And I think more so they were trying it because they are doing 16 shows in 24 days. That doesn't give the voice much time to recoop the exhaustion of singing live. I could be wrong, if so, please correct me - but in the clubs in Europe aren't you allowed to smoke? If yes, that makes it ever worse on the chords.

Jeff, great comments about the "head voice"...funny that when you take voice lessons the first thing they teach you is how to get out of that and feel it in your gut...but I guess as you progress you must learn to do both and pull from each whenever you have to.

In any case, you are doing great things for this band! Any band that can lead a chorus of " Don't Stop

Believing" in these times is sorely needed in the USA...keep walkin the path!

I think that has really what has made me a fan of Jeff. I always think the guy must be on such a high, fronting a band he grew up being a huge fan of. I'm sure that he probably never really envisioned being the front man of Journey when he was belting out the notes to Don't Stop Believin', 20 years ago! His respect for the legacy of Journey couldn't be more evident. It's almost as if he's accepted "custody" (for lack of a better term) of this superb catalogue of music and doing his damndest to do it justice, each and every night! His respect for this band will always allow me, and many other Journey fans, to accept this guy!

Jeff doesn't need to pass any song onto Deen...Jeff can and does sing any of the catalog with grace and ease....If those "people" that come here to bait had seen any of the Fla. shows they would understand....Each show got better and better and in my opinion the HOB in Orlando was the best yet..

Jeff can sing like an angel and with emotion just like SP....totally freaky that in my lifetime I have found another singer that can sing the songs I have loved for so long and just the way I like them to sound...PERFECT...

We are so lucky that our favorite band can continue with such an accomplished talent like JSS!!!!

Jeff,
Thanks for the response.It's funny,
Perry said the same thing to me at the WOF, when I complimented him and told him that had been my hero since i was a kid!!
Are you sure you are not channeling his energy!?;)

JSS

Before I even say anything, let me preface this by saying this is not a bust on SA!!
I wish they had thought of tuning down a 1/2 step to save his voice.
I agree with most everyone when I say SA did a good job, before his voice went.
I actually wonder if they had considered it or even tried it in rehearsal.
Tapegate is a whole other issue.I DO feel bad for SA. Met him a number of times and he was
a real nice guy.

Now with that being said, I actually wish that Journey had known about JSS and that he got the gig to begin with.
I know a lot of people (especially a lot of those on BT & the wigglers)don't think Jeff is a good fit,he is too metal for Journey, as well as all the other bullshit we've all heard.
I for one, am a great fan of Jeff's, have been for years, and I think the coolest thing about him being part of the band now, is his respect for the Journey legacy, and actually being a fan of the band, and knowing so much about their history. My understanding is that SA was just a moderate fan of the band, but Jeff know about their history and studied the songs like all of US fans have.

I was at his first show in Virginia,at another about midway through the tour in Columbus, and months later in Baltimore at one of the last shows of the tour, and the difference was astounding. It was cool to catch 3 shows and watch him grow into the position.
I haven't been as excited about a Journey record, since the Perry days.
Jeff is doing a great job, and I hope they decide to do some shows this summer.
Jeff was made for this band, and I think he has done an awesome job (to quote the Firg)as an abassador of Rock and Roll!!

Allegedly, fore-ordained Journey frontman (well, almost), Kevin Chalfant, also reccomended tuning down the songs for Augeri.
I used to speculate that the band wouldn't tune down songs for SA because they didn't want to do anything that might protract his tenure in the band.

Keeping the songs in their original key, signing up for more tours with the full knowledge that your singer is toast....these are all signs of a band that want's to jettison their frontman.

Neal wanted to make this change for quite some time now and as the drawn-out legal wrangling proved, Augeri, an equal partner, was not going to abandon the microphone willfully.
They saw an opportunity & went for it.

why would they bring him on, all the while planning to submarine him??

For the same reason they would outlaw tapes knowing Augeri was vocally debilitated.

..it would submarine them too.

And it damn well nearly did.
Or did you forget Augeri was let go during the Def tour because his nightly performances proved not to be up to the task?

Embarassing? - surely, but only temporarily and now the band has their convenient pretext to fall back on about Steve "losing his voice."
