Having seen Journey but twice before (Orland & Ft Lauderdale in November) I was not entirely sure what to expect last night (Sheffield) and was blown away. Hitherto my allegiance has been to JSS in all his solo guises (having spent a couple of years on the road with him) and last night saw Jeff in his true role - leading from the front, involving everyone, bringing the audience in, and projecting his not insubstantial talent.
I have only one Journey album (Greatest Hits) and it doesn't do justice to last nights performance - not that I am dissing either of the Steve's in any way whatsoever. The support act Danny Vaughn and Tony Marshall prepared the ground well enough, raising expectations of the audience and selling their 'wares' so well that even this BOF might just put his hand in his pocket and buy a copy of 'Traveller' - the phrase 'warm up' or 'Support' doesn't even go part-way to saying how excellent their acoustic set was.
On to the 'plat du jour'; It quite simply rocked from the start and whist it was scheduled to be a 90-minute set, it was the merest blink and we were at 2 hrs +
I cannot profess to critique any of the songs, suffice it to say that there wasn't a weak chink anywhere in the set - except the very end, when you really want more there is suddenly nothing left.
Newcastle be prepared to be entertained royally. If I hadn't got a sore throat, I'd do what I could to drive the 5-hour trip.
