Yes, I'd agree with that, Dave.

Both great albums but not on par with Boston's debut. That album is one of the few that you will hear every track from on classic rock radio. I can only think of a few others that is the case with.

Yes, those are close...but the Boston record has the edge, for me anyway.

After i made the post about Bostons debut album. I was trying to think of other great debut records. Here are a few i thought of.

Foreigner Some classics But only 3 songs are heard on the radio First time , Cold as ice & Long long way from home.

Led Zeppelin 1 Great!
GNR The best debut metal album
Pearl Jam The best debut grunge album
The Cars 8 out of 9 songs are still played on Fm radio
Bad Company A monster!
Van Halen One of the all time greats!

I'm sure there's many more But these are the ones i thought of right now.

Yeah, this would be a good idea for its own thread. Maybe a poll?

I find it awfully difficult to argue against Led Zeppelin's debut. Most are kinda shaky, spotty, baby steps kinda thing...

Zep roars out of the gate with a record that sounds like a fully mature unit in it's 5th album. Not a cheesy or weak song ON it.

I don't think it's much of a question as for what is "better". I believe Boston's debut album is actually the greatest selling debut album in the history of music. At least that's what they said the other night on the news, when running the Delp story. I tried confirming this somewhere on the net, but couldn't seem to come up with it. My hunch is that Alanis Morrisette's "Jagged Little Pill" might have passed it. I thought I heard that was pretty up there for debut releases.

Okay...better...in terms of quality...in my opinion. Alanis Morisette? Yes...maybe she did outsell it...but my hunch is that "Appetite For Destruction" is the closest rival. I guess we need some facts though!

Hootie and the Blowjobs held that title for a bit. Boston will certainly get a bump with Brad's death, though. Regardless, Boston's is the best.

"Hootie & The Blowfish’s “Cracked Rear View” advances to 16 million and is now tied with Boston’s self-titled album as the best-selling debut album of all time by a group. Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill,” which is also at 16 million, remains the best-selling U.S. debut by a solo artist. (Morissette previously released two albums in her native Canada.)"

As taken off the RIAA site.
I don't know how "up-to-date" this info is. But that's what's posted there.
.............................................................................
*edit* I went and looked again- March 1999. So while it's old, it still pertains to those albums mention by all of you above.
( Hell, nothing sells like that anymore!)

And as "un-PC" this may be- JoePA is right-
The Boston catalog is going to get a shot in the arm because of this. Just saying....... :(
Not that it's right- it just is......

Hey KC...

Thanks for confirming that I was correct about Alanis  I actually had forgotten that Hootie's "Cracked Rear View" was the success that it was!

No problem John!
Actually, I looked at their "Top 100 albums" list, which was last updated on 7/31/2006
Boston- 17 mil
Hootie- 16 mil
Alanis- 16 mil.

So Boston's still ahead.

Here's the link- FYI: http://www.riaa.com/gp/bestsellers/topalbums.asp

That album by Hootie and The Blowjobs wasn't their true debut album. It was only their "big label" debut album.

Boston's self-titled debut is the highest-selling debut album by a rock group. Solo artists obviously aren't in the mix there.

Hey fuck off. Go back and try READING. Some yahoo was rambling and brought up Steve Perry. THAT's when it all started.

Knock it off BOTH of you.

There is no reason this thread should be diverted off toipic - NO reason at all. I'm disappointed.

And no, Brad did not commit suicide, so let's knock that on the head NOW, Ok?
