**DEANO ~ DON'T READ!!** LOL  8)

This has crossed my mind a few times, and I want your thoughts / opinions:

Do you think Steve Perry has created such a Vocal "Monster" (no pun intended ) with his prior work, that his "perfectionist" self won't let him get NEAR a mic ~ to record new stuff?

I mean, he KNOWS that he doesn't sound like his "former self" (ie: higher range)....but:

HOW MANY SINGERS can change their ENTIRE VOCAL DELIVERY ~ and become even MORE successful?

Example:

"Open Arms" "Faithfully"

Discuss. 8)

Don't forget in the Laidlaw song when he sings, "Better get on home girl" and it sounds like his 70's vocal tone.

That was recorded in 1999.

Personally I think Perry enjoys the unrestricted life that he
leads now.
So I tend to believe that he slides away from solo studio
releases and hoopla of anything new.
Do I think he has stayed away from the solo-phone for so long because
he can't sing those ass slayin notes?...........no.
I think he realizes his abilities and chooses to do projects with others
as opposed to whole cd's and promotional gigs.

Good question lady.

Lots to think about here Nora. I think it's a combination of his own perfectionism and what he thinks the fans'expectations may be. We know that a lot of the Journey fanbase thinks Journey should sound the same as they always have, so it stands to reason they think he should too. A lot of people on the various boards have even said they don't want Steve back with Journey because he doesn't sound like he did 25 - 30 years ago. They would rather have a clone that can give the illusion that they're listening to what they think Journey should sound like.

That sort of segues into the second part of your post. Which of the sounds of Journey are they looking for? Steve's voice and delivery changed, as did the music of Journey, with every album after Departure. There were commonalities in all of them, one of which being that Perry's voice was always immediately recognizable as Perry regardless of key, range, or delivery, the other being Neal's guitar sound, but there were definitely evolving, maturing and growing musically with every album from Departure thru TBF.

That's what I find confusing about what people expect from a Journey frontman. Which album's vocal sound is the Journey sound? For me it's a lot more than reaching high notes.

The one thing Perry's voice always has, regardless of his key or range is a sumptuous depth of heart, soul and resonance that is all his. I'd be willing to bet he still has that, but probably doesn't think it's enough.

There are a couple of artists that come to mind that voice is completely different than it was originally. Elton John and Madonna. Elton John's voice was much higher in the 70's and early 80's. Madonna well she never does the same thing twice ;)

Actually, this is a good question, but the majority of the Loons turned it into yet again, a Perry lovefest....

I would bet $50 that this will never, never happen...but you can't bet on a negative, so what's the point.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is the closest you will see that incarnation of the band share a stage again. Journey will NEVER get into the RR Hall of Fame, and they will NEVER tour again, or do a one off show, in that TBF lineup.

You are smart Hunsicker, but that was my point; a one off, in Cleveland.

They WILL get in, and they WILL do a couple tunes. Journey is too good NOT to get in,a nd they are TOO professional(unlike VH), to show up and respect the HOF.

Jann Wenner!! Jann Wenner controls the HOF!! He would just as soon swallow his own ballbag than see Journey in the HOF. Those people absolutely hate Journey, and Perry in particular, with a passion. No amount of petitions, etc will ever change that.

I don't think anything could ever change the musical/critical establishment's hate for the band. Those rivers run deep, all the way back to San Francisco, where I believe many people in that circlejerk blame Journey specifically for the destruction of all things musically sacred.

Couldn't agree with ya more Sher! I think you're right, maybe he thinks he has to deliver those vocal acrobatics that fans associate him with.........Journey's has to be one of the most critical fan bases ever! When in reality for alot of fans it is more about the delivery than the range. Heck, my all-time favorite Journey song is Still They Ride and there isn't as much range in that one........but he can drag out a word like no other singer I've ever heard. And I think you're right that he still has that, heck you can hear it in his speaking voice. Damnit Steve! :) LOL, I think my sig line says it all, thanks Nora.

That is where people are getting real critical with JSS too.......is the range on the early stuff, but look at how well some of the more (soul/emotion) songs are going over.....like I'll Be Alright Without You, Message of Love, Edge of the Blade, Open the Door, etc.
In 'After The Fall', JSS nails the most soulfully-delivered line by Perry in the whole song........."and your sweet caress, I miss you now"....very impressed.

Journey music is soooooo much more about the delivery than it is about the range for me. I think that is why I'm really enjoying JSS's Escape/Frontiers/ROR stuff. :)

 Yeah, that would sure change his mind. He'd head straight to the Booze thread with a headache.

On Nora's topic:SP sure created a vocal "monster" even for himself. His shoes are hard to fill, but I guess he thought more than once what will it take for him to re-fill his own shoes,so to speak and un-retire...He must be aware that a part of the fans are longing for his high voice era, others want him to grow his TBF-hair back and sing like it's 1994 again and the most disturbing thing is that there are fans who would love to hear him only to evaluate his present voice.
I've said it before...Perfectionists like SP are their own enemies.
However, passion is stronger than any fear. :)

On the RNRHOF topic:I don't think the fans care anymore about Journey's induction into that dump. The only flicker of interest comes at the thought that Journey could reunite in the golden line-up and play at the event. But not even that would be a sure thing.Look at VH.

Completely off topic: Deano, for the last time,I am politely asking you to leave me out of your rants.Enough is enough.

Enough, take it to a pm, I am not going to defend myself and no you don't know who I know in the entertainment business, there is no way you know.
