Listening to this song on the radio with my amazing Sony digital headphones. I cannot stand this song, or video, but Steve's vocals are amazing on this song.
I vote this as one of Perry's best vocals for a song I cannot stand.

When Bevis & Butthead trashed the video, that's when you knew Journey had hit a nerve with people. I'm sure the song is something the band is proud of, can't say the same for the video, I'm sure they're all deeply embarrassed about. Most likely whey there were never really any true concept videos by the band. However, Faithfully is probably the best "concept" video the band had, as well as the best song ever from the band.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but music video making was in it's infancy when that was made, so I forgive 'em for not getting it quite right.

And despite the video, the musical talent shines through. Never fails to cheer me up if I'm feeling down.

it was around for a short time as making videos specially for TV channels to show them, but of COurse Journey was into Video, long before that. The band always trives/thrived on live music, which I think is why they almost always released "live" videos for their songs.

Don't get me wrong, it cheers people up and makes them laugh at how awful the video really is. That's gotta be worth something.

IMO the Chain Reaction one is the worst.

I actually enjoy watching the Separate Ways one, but the Chain Reaction one is embarrassing.

It was the 80s, not too many bands had great concept videos back then (until Wayne Isham came along with LIVE videos). Alot of the best LIVE videos from our favorite bands back in the 80s and 90s were done by him. He directed When You Love a Woman and the ROR Documentary too, along with Live videos for Bon Jovi, Def Lepard, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, etc. http://www.mvdbase.com/tech.php?last=Isham&first=Wayne

I really can't remember any good videos that weren't live performance videos. I remember trying to understand why people were so into MTV when all that I saw seemed so stupid to me. :roll:

I definitely agree with you about the video. I've said it here in the past...It is a HORRENDOUSLY bad video! If there is a worst video, I haven't seen it! It's beyond embarrassing! I actually can't believe someone put that together and thought to themselves "Hey, this is good, let's roll with it"!

Now, to your more important point, Perry NAILS this song (and every other song I ever heard him sing)! The first JSS boot I heard when he first joined Journey was Jeff attempting to sing Separate Ways, and it simply wasn't good, AT ALL! He simply couldn't hit the many high notes in that song. To be fair to Jeff, he was BRAND new to this material and for all I know, wasn't feeling well that night. I have heard many subsequent boots where Jeff has done a SUPERB job on a song that I thought he butchered, fresh out of the gate!

I *just* put the Separate Ways video in my blog the other day and sparked a whole convo amongst my friends about how awful it was! That air-piano that Jon is trying to do makes him look like Teen Wolf clawing at something. HAHAHA

That being said, you know I adore this song. SP can "break those chains" off his wrists all he likes... HA! (And no, I'm not a loon... YET!! LOL)

And get this... after I put the vid in my blog, I inspired a friend to grab her Journey's Greatest Hits on the way to work that day, and she fell back in love with the band.

So there you go. Horrid, cheesy, awful video and all!!

(I still thing Survivor's "Caught in the Game" might be a worse video!)

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) is such a spectacular song that it has thus far avoided going down the dirt road that the Stones' Start Me Up went for me.
The road that it is a terrific song and I don't care if I ever hear it again.

But I probably only proactively seek out and play the studio version of SW like 3-5 times per year now. Live versions, well there's always a new kick to be had and this seems to be one of JSS' command performances as it were (Baltimore: Holy SHIT and that was before he became good :wink:

). Little bit of new life going on there live
