Will do, thanks! A fag is a cigarette?

Correct.
A packet of fags is a carton of cigarettes.
But just to confuse matters, in some parts of England - the Newcastle/North East area call cigarettes 'tabs.'

damnit Nig! I'm NOT GAY! but my boyfriend is.

Of course I'm having fun with you folks. If any of you had ever heard the very funny fagtalk segments that used to be played on radio statios, you'd know the references.

Then again. People will think what they want. I'm not skeered.

I remember Simon's stadium tour he did a few years ago. Kicked ass. Funny thing is Simon will see the R&R hall of fame before Kiss or Journey do.

The reason Simon Cowell is so 'big' isn't because he is an arogant, overbearing arsehole, but because we (the viewer) allow him to be so. The huge popularity of his entertainments (I hate to call them shows) is driven by the public's love of seeing people humiliated as well as praised. Of all the genre I really did prefer the shows like (and forgive me I cannot remember the title) the one that found the Inxs singer. At least there the singers get a chance to express themselves, but so many are totally forgetable that it can do them not a lot of good.

I'm not ashamed that Cowell is a Brit - he appears to be good at what he does, its just that what he does (on the TV) isn't one of the best.

Uncle H

PS if you want to look at the genre from a different angle try Ben Elton's new book 'Chart Throb', its incisively funny in a British way.

Simon is "responsible" for giving the world the teletubbies. The TELETUBBIES! What's that tell you about his "talent" in the music biz? What's funny is when he's chastising a kid who's trying out for AI, and the kids' response is, "yeah, but You produced the teletubbies...". That usually shuts his up pretty fast. Granted he probably made his name and a lot of money form it.

Fox and Simon have one goal and that is to sell commercials. This show is not about music till the very end. It is about getting ratings( $$$ from commercials) by being obnoxious .Just watch the last 2 shows and it MAY be worth your time. They need judges like David Foster and John Kalodner to have credibility. Simon is a self promoter and has a financial interest . Therefore, he should remove himself if the show is to be taken seriously. The American people are gulible when it comes to music or just about anything for that matter.AI is just another reality show that uses music instead of eating worms.

Sort of the same subject here.

There's a site called votefortheworst, or something like that, that's encouraging people to vote for Sanjaya. I've heard that Howard Stern is doing the same in order to see what they will do with a winner who just flat out can't sing.

Yep, there ya go.

Think about it though. What will they do with him if this kid wins this contest? So far Taylor Hicks has been the closest to a loser who has won and I don't think he's doing too well, but he wasn't anywhere near as bad as this pitiful little kid.

That's a bit cruel IMO - are people really voting for who they think is the worst?

As far as I know, Simon's most successful 'band' are called Westlife. I use the term 'band' loosely, as none of them play any instruments. They just stand there and sing. No dance routines either. They are a bunch of Irish lads who sing mostly covers. They've had huge sales over in the UK and Ireland, but I'm not sure if they've infiltrated the U.S.
Simon has made a lot of money out of them.
I know he's also behind an Act called Il Divo.
He started his working life at the bottom of the ladder at a record company, then clawed his way to the top.
But these are the only two Acts I can think of that he's been responsible for.
I've no idea how he got so rich on the strength of just these two Acts.
Must be more I don't know about - but, then, they are hardly the kind of 'bands' most discerning music lovers take much notice of. Yawn, yawn.

We are not talking music really. AI is selling performers, not songwriters. They are selling people that look good (most of the time), move well, entertain on and off the stage, and interpret someone else's work. If this was a show judging composition, the choices would be way less. Righting a great song is not easy. Finding a great song writer that is young and the next money maker is even harder.

Ditto. This is the biggest complaint among many that I have with the show. As it is, it is little more than a mega-hyped Karaoke contest. Some great voices for sure, but I wish the show was truly a platform for new “talent” (like Trag    ) – where the contestants could play instruments, had to write their own music… It would be a little harder for the producers, I guess, to sift through. But I think that it would be a much better show. Though I'm not sure how much of what is voted as best by the masses is going to be great music  .

I friggin' HATE American Idol. All it is is a glorified karaoke contest. It stands for everything wrong with the music industry today. It gives us nothing but cookie cutter pop idols that have about as much talent as a sponge, while real talents like Butch Walker are reduced to having to produce and write for these no talents.

Musical trends usually last about ten years before they die. The problem is the music industry just doesn't want to let the rap/r&b/pop thing die even though it's been popular for over ten years. And they wonder why music sales are in the tank.
