saint John wrote:Herbie is a typical Berkeley hippie. A few good ideas and a whole lot of name-calling, finger pointing and self-adulation. He likes to take credit for finding Perry but ALWAYS stops short of giving him any praise. The man went out there night after night, tour after tour and belted out the hardest catalog in music. NO singer could have done it at the level he did. This will serve as a reminder...look closely, and remember it was all LIVE.

Some of that info is actually incorrect, but yes, Perry was a workhorse. Not to discount the rest of the band, but his voice was in danger of going out, before any of the band members were in danger of not being able to play their instruments. I don't blame him for keeping his voice quiet between concerts.

Jeff's doing a great job (Deen too) singing the very hard Perry sung catalog.
Without ego, we have no pride in what we are saying.

Any wonder he began to hate touring?

And remember this. The rest of the band could go out after shows, drink til dawn, party, carouse around and do whatever else it is that they did. Perry, being the lead singer, had to take care of his voice. He couldn't talk, be in smoky rooms, drink all night, etc. because of the band's intense tour schedule. I think THAT'S what he meant with his "I never really felt like part of the band" comment. If so, then he's right.

Damn Saint, I've never thought of the situation that way at all. If that's the case, you have a damn good point on Perry's comment. Good post.

VH1 just put it in the most controversial context they could. Then, you had the comments by the other guys that may have been taken out of context as well.

That could be true but...

Didn't Perry pretty much have complete and absolute final say on VH1's final cut?
If that was the case then he HAD to know that that comment would be taken way out of context...
Unless he meant exactly what he said. Just a thought.

I seriously doubt he had "absolute" control. My guess is he could take out any disparaging remarks against himself and remove anything he said that he may have regretted. In the end though, I believe VH1 was able to go forwad with what was OK'd and weave it into something it really wasn't. I'd love to see them knock on his door for a "one-time" show on Bands Reunited. They could fill the fuckin' Grand Canyon (IF he said yes :D ).

When I look over all those concert dates I am just beyond AMAZED that SP was singing at every single one! Night after night, traveling, different hotel rooms, singing those tough Journey songs with all the emotion...gads, no wonder he got burned out! Super-human! I applaud you, Mr. Perry!
(and, I could just cry for missing out - he was right in my backyard several times - life just got in the way.)

Like I said earlier. That was a VERY unfair schedule for the lead singer moreso than anyone else. Being alone on the road not being able to talk much of the time or hit a bar to unwind had to really blow. Especially when your bandmates were probably rolling in at dawn talking about how much fun they had. I wouldn't feel like part of the band either. That is of course, IF that's how it went down.

SJ, you absolutely rock. 8)

Thank you for putting this perspective on things....with that Tour schedule, I just have a mental image of Perry as a literal "workhorse"; blinders and all.

Perry WAS a workhorse. But according to Herbie, HE'S the reason Journey was so successful, when in FACT it was Perry's bionic voice more than anything that allowed them to even think about such a grueling tour, let alone pull it off flawlessly. Herbie did a lot of good, but his later years were spent booking the most sought after band in the country, constant eating, and stealing form the band when they weren't looking. Stealing is a reprehensible act considering how much money Herbie was making WITHOUT stealing. I'm glad Perry fired him. I wish he could do it again!

Cause and effect. If there's a bigger reason than Perry's attitude for Perry not being there today, it's this schedule.

Other than his "toast" comment, I don't think so. It's hard for those who are great at what they do to admit that. Whether it be athletes, musicians, or another profession, we usually get an excuse or no reason at all, rather than the truth. Probably a pride thing. Gotta be terribly hard to admit you just can't do it anymore, whether it be emotionally or physically. This is why Augeri is hated by so many. He perpetuated a farce rather than stepping down.

I think his "toast" comment might have been moreso over the burn out of those ridiculous ass long tours and not his voice going out. Just my opinion.

Which is why I stated "emotionally or physically." I think it was a combination of both.

saint John wrote:Herbie is a typical Berkeley hippie.

Oooh May 8th 1983 Nassau///I was there
Scalped last minute tickets
Me n my friend Barbara & her yellow Karmen Ghia...
It was a eventful for Barbara as she met her hus=band to be that night in the parking lot
As for myself....the future is yet to be written...

As for Herbie
I can't hear a thong...Oh perish the thought!
His stomach is growling
The earth is trembling
Pray to the mountain
Make a sacrifice
Ooooh help...
Who will sate Herbie when
the gravy train is no where to be found...
8)

As for taking shortcuts...Don't tell me...
Herbie We love You
Thanks for everything
Now go take a hike....
