This is very depressing. One can only wonder what went on in his mind to cause him to do this. Emotional pain is very tough to deal with. Not everyone has the strength to battle through. I once read that much like your physical health declines as you age, your mental health tends to decline and is just as hard to maintain for some. Just a sad, sad story.

What were the reasons? I love this kind of stuff.

"What were the reasons?"

1) Tom was told by the promoter, No Brad , no tour. Brad always cared about others.

2) Brad needed the funds for his family.

Well I've heard nothing but good things about the guy myself. I just hate it that he felt like he had no other way out. That is the saddest part of this whole thing. He must have been suffering pretty heavily.

Brad Delp
Singer with the hugely successful 1970s rock band BostonJune 12, 1951 - March 9, 2007
Brad Delp’s high, wailing voice was one of the signature sounds of 1970s rock music.

As the lead singer with Boston he fronted one of the most commercially successful rock bands of all time. Their debut album, Boston (1976), nestles behind Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and the Beatles’ White Album as the 11th best-selling LP in musical history, with sales of 17 million copies.

Born in Danvers, Massachu-setts, in 1951, Delp fell in love with pop music after seeing the Beatles on television in 1964, and persuaded his parents to buy him a guitar. After school he worked in a factory until the early 1970s, when he became the lead singer with Boston.

Led by Tom Scholz, an engineering graduate who had built a 12-track recording studio in the basement of his Boston home, Delp, the guitarist Barry Goudreau and the drummer Jim Masdea recorded a demo tape that earned the band a contract with Epic Records.

Joined by the bassist Fran Sheehan and with Sib Hashian replacing Masdea, Boston was ready to plug the gap in a market dominated by disco music for a smoothly produced, radio-friendly band playing what came to be known as “adult-oriented rock” (AOR).

Characterised by catchy hooks, soaring guitars, memorable riffs and Delp’s screaming vocals, the album rocketed up the charts in the US and Britain. It spawned the hit single More than a Feeling, which remains a staple of rock radio more than 30 years on.

The follow-up, Don’t Look Back (1978), also topped the US charts and made the British Top Ten. After it, however, the band lapsed into limbo, partly because of legal arguments with Epic and partly because of Scholz’s determination to work at his own pace. It was only in 1986 that the band’s next album, Third Stage, appeared, by when only Scholz and Delp were left from the original lineup. Despite the long wait, their fans had not forgotten them, and Third Stage topped the US charts.

Another eight years elapsed before Boston were heard of again with the release of Walk On in 1994. By then Delp had also left, having teamed up in 1991 with Goudreau in the band RTZ.

The success of Walk On led to Delp rejoining Boston for the tour that followed the album’s release, and he sang on several new songs that appeared on the 1997 album Boston: Greatest Hits. Work on a fifth album, Corporate America, began the following year — although in typical fashion it did not appear until 2002.

When not touring with Boston Delp amused himself playing in a Beatles cover band called Beatlejuice and performed around Boston with Goudreau.

A new Boston album was said to be in preparation at the time of his death, and Delp was scheduled to tour with the band this summer.

Delp was found dead at his home from unknown causes. He is survived by two children from his first marriage and was to marry his long-time partner Pamela Sullivan this year.

Brad Delp, rock singer, was born on June 12, 1951. He died on March 9, 2007, aged 55

I didn't want to start the Tom influence comments...but since that's been breached now. After I heard it was suicide, one of the first thoughts in my mind was, "I wonder how much of Tom's goofiness contributed?" Didn't want to think it, but it did make sense to do so.

A Message from Tom Scholz
March 11, 2007

The following was posted on bandboston.com Sunday afternoon:

As you all know by now, BOSTON'S lead singer, Brad Delp, was found dead in his home on Friday, March 9th 2007. Plans for live BOSTON performances this summer have, of course, been cancelled.

My heart goes out to his wonderful fiance Pamela, his two children and other family members, his close friends and band mates, and to the millions of people whose lives were made a little brighter by the sound of his voice. He will be dearly missed.

There was a suicide in my family in 1999, and it's a tragedy. You can only imagine what pain someone had to have been in to get to the point where they do the deed. I have nothing but compassion for people in that position. It sucks for the family left behind, but that kind of pain obviously has no comparison. Poor Brad.

I hope he is now at peace.

CONCORD, N.H. - The family of Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston, said his death was a suicide.

"He was a man who gave all he had to give to everyone around him, whether family, friends, fans or strangers," the family said in a statement relayed by police Wednesday. "He gave as long as he could, as best he could, and he was very tired. We take comfort in knowing that he is now, at last, at peace."

Delp, 55, died Friday at his Atkinson home.

Toxicology tests by the state medical examiner's office showed that Delp committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, said Lt. William Baldwin. Police said Delp had sealed himself inside a bathroom with two charcoal grills sometime between 11:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday afternoon, when he was found by fiancee Pamela Sullivan.

Delp also left two notes taped to a door and letters to his family and Sullivan. Baldwin said police do not know the contents of the letters.

The family's statement said Sullivan, Delp's children and their mother, Delp's ex-wife Micki Delp, were grateful for the sympathy they had received.

Delp joined Boston in the mid-1970s and sang two of its biggest hits, "More than a Feeling" and "Long Time."

He had planned to marry Sullivan this summer during a break in a tour with Boston. A lifelong Beatles fan, Delp also played with the tribute band Beatle Juice.

Beatle Juice performed a benefit last year to help build a new public library in Atkinson, a small town of about 6,000 residents on the Massachusetts border.

The family said last week it planned a private funeral followed by a public memorial to be scheduled later.

RIP Brad. You will be missed.

very, very sad. one thing i wonder about is WHERE people choose to commit suicide. suicide is always tragic, but is it worse when it's done at home for loved ones to discover the body?

That is so true Cyndy. I had a friend whose husband killed himself in their home. Finding him was so tramatic for her she had to sell the house. She just couldn't live there any more. And seeing what she saw haunted her for years.

They dont think about it in those terms, they are overwhelmed with inner turmoil, and the only way to rid it is to end their lives, doing it in their homes is a matter of convienience, or a place where they are left alone.People who are at the point of being suicidal do not make rational decisions.Often, no matter how supportive you are to someone who is that depressed, the end result turns out to be fatal.

Exactly. I am trying not to dwell to much on this part because it's just to damn hard to comprehend. The death sucked first. Then to find out that someone with his heart committed suicide was just awful. Granted, any form of suicide bites, but this just..I don't know.. :(

The way I understand mental illnesses ,much is genetic. I think pressures trigger more anxieties. These deplete serotonin and norephemine(brain chemicals) forgive spelling, that give a person a feeling of well being. This is why people who have it all, still remain in the depths of depression. Brain chemical levels are out of the norms. This is what meds replace. Reality is often diminished by unrealistic feelings. His perception was his reality. I hope his family knows that they probably could not have predicted this. Neither can doctors.

It is always tragic - I've heard about way too many suicides...one of my brother's friend's shot himself going thru a car wash...someone else my sister knew crashed his van with explosive chemicals right in front of his former girlfriend's house after shouting out to her that he loved her...another recent one was my brother-in-law's good friend...it is always so heart-rending for the family & friends, I remember a friend losing her brother who she was very close to by suicide - you never know what to say, but there must be such turmoil & despondency within the person to resort to this - life is hard & cruel & very painful at times...I only wish that people who feel this way can somehow reach out for help & understanding because there are many people who have felt there was no hope when there actually is & they AREN'T ALONE.

Tom Scholz is a piece of shit. His royalties, compared to Brad's, are ridiculous. He's a crook and was NEVER Brad's friend, but did a good job of portraying himself in that light. This is just ANOTHER indication of who and WHAT he REALLY is.....a piece of shit.
