Does anyone have the interview where Cain said Prince called him about "borrowing" Faithfully for Purple Rain?

Also, does anyone have where JSS played Purple Rain and Faithfully together as one song this past fall? I thought it was on youtube but I can't find it....

schon and jss played purple rain/ faithfully at the ARF show..audio only.. the cain interview is in the melodic rock achives of interviews i think.. or go to search and type in CAIN,, that should do it ..

That whole exchange (above from the interview) makes little sense, when reading it out of context, then again, whenever I heard an interview with the guys, there was so much talking over each other, it was hard to tell what was going on.

I never once made any connection between the songs, and frankly love both songs. It won't make me go listen to each and try to line up parts to see what's close, but it's nice that Prince has always acknowledged great music from other people. Everyone is influenced by other people. It just takes someone else to notice the influences sometimes.

I remember hearing that interview - it was a funny free-for-all. At the time I didn’t understand half of what was said, so it’s fun to read an attempt at a transcript. Boy that Perry is a dirty, dirty boy. There are a few demos out there with him and his panty-fetish-rantings, too… lol.

Personally I never put the two songs together at all. Played side by side, it sure is the same chord progression, but the melody isn't really similar. Jonathan Cain was so generous back then.

You know what I've always felt sounded similar to Faithfully...Elton's 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.'

They're obviously two different songs, and I'm not saying that anything was borrowed/stolen from DLTSGDOM. But the melody and structure is very similar.

Steve Smith credits Nigel Ollsen as a big influence on playing ballads. You can hear that big time in this song. Smith uses the same approach on the drum fills towards the middle/end.

Steve discussed this in the interview he did for the Open Arms Anthology songbook that was released last year:

SP - After this song (Faithfully) was a hit, we got a tape from the management of Prince. There was a song called "Purple Rain," and the manager said this was going to be the title of his upcoming film. They were concerned about releasing it, thinking we might come after them for copyright infringement. We were given this cassette in advance of the release of the film, to make sure there were not going to be any problems. Prince had inadvertently used the same chord changes as in the outro of "Faithfully." Though he was singing the words "purple rain" over them, they were still the same changes. I remember Neal and Jon saying, "It's okay." I thought that if they're okay with it, then so was I so we told them it would not be a problem.

Since Elton is a fag the name of the song SHOULD have been "Don't Let Your Son Go Down On Me."
