The documentary "Champions of the World" is pretty good.

I still miss Freddie to this very day. I too felt a large void when he passed. I was fortunate to see Queen with Freddie several times, and it's almost impossible to describe. He was larger than life in concert.....a true showman, and unsurpassed vocalist.

Boy, those were the days.

Despite the over-the-top nature of much of Queen's music, they're really one of the few bands that made a real connection with their fans, in my opinion. Even if Freddie wasn't on top of his game vocally, he still put on a hell of a show.

Yes, it was certainly an improvement over "The Miracle". There are at least three or four tunes on that album that are as good as anything they've ever done.

Something I've always loved about Freddie's voice, and who he was, was just the total lack of pretention in his voice and style. He didn't give a fuck what anyone thought, and he just had the most amazing voice. Live, he wasn't the circus freak that Perry was, but this was a guy who lived every day as if it were his last, and the smoking and drinking never seemed to adversely touch his pipes. You really have 2 sides of the spectrum between Perry and Mercury - Perry, the reclusive "don't touch me"/wrap my throat in linen approach to singing, and then Mercury, the drink a bottle of wine, smoke a pack of cigarettes, party all night approach to singing. Freddie sang almost to the end with that approach, and his delivery and conviction rivaled Perry at his best.

I always cringe a little when they make biopics about famous people who are still fairly recently deceased. I've seen them done about Princess Diana, Linda McCartney, and others. I think it's rare when they're actually done well.

I too remember the Sunday night that Kurt Loader(?) came on MTV and announced to the world that Freddie had passed away. A very sad night, indeed. I remember seeing the videos in the following days of These are the days and the rest of teh songs and thinking, man he knew the end was near for him. Hell, they kept his having AIDS a "secret" until the night before he died. Though I think some people were aware that there was something very wrong with him by that point in time.

I could see Johnny Depp (looking the way he did in Charlie and the chocolate factory) playing him, with Jeff singing the music. Even metter having the guys in the band, backing him up for the music.

I always find it best to cast unknowns in biopics as using better known actors tend to take something away from the character being played as they're too well known.

Having said that, i think Val Kilmer was absolutely awesome as Jim Morrisson in The Doors movie. Probably the best portrail of a rockstar in any biopic.

Totally agree, they couldn't have picked a better fit for Jim Morrisson in that movie.

The Rock World had a double-dose of loss that day...

He used to live with that lady.
He later left her but they remained close always.
He did bequeath her a large portion of his fortune.

She knew he loved her, but she also knew he loved men and understood he had to have relationships outside their own. Whenever I have seen her give an interview on TV, she has always come over as dignified, ladylike, and discreet.

This movie is going to be great viewing.

Looking forward to seeing that one too SusieP. Johnny is such a versatile actor, I can see him pulling it off. Freddie's hairstyle and a mustache, some caps to make his front teeth a little more prominent and there ya go. I can so see him getting Freddie's flamboyant stage personna down too. He's already admitted modelled a couple major characters after rockstars. Jack Sparrow sort of after Keith Richards, and Willy Wonka sort of after Marilyn Manson. Jonny's a rockn'roller at heart, I think it's great casting.

As great as Freddie's voice was, and he was one of the two best-ever vocalists, imo, it's his writing that I really miss. He had a knack of getting to the quick of an emotion. He could make me cry, and make me want to take on the world. Some of his solo work is very profound.
