And why the hell NOT?

Because the band already has two great vocalists who can do it better.
Any of them could take Perry's duet parts, but I'd go with Deen on that one, just because Jeff can sing like anyone,Rolie style included.

I like Kevin Chalfant and enjoy his solo work and the Storm's releases. Saw him live a few times, met him and exchanged a few emails. He seems like a good guy and doing a Journey tribute album probably seems logical to some, but I'm not sure what the point is. Seems like a step backwards for him.

And why the hell NOT? Who was Rolie, Andrea Boccelli or something?
Cain's been covering the old Rolie parts since '98 and I've never seen ANYone bitch about it until last year.
Is it "we got rid of AugHackie, now we need to skewer Cain?" :?

There is NO precedent for a frontman/drummer duet.

I never liked hearing Jon sing anything. I love the song Pride of the Family, but would love it more with someone else singing.

I've never had a problem with Jon covering Gregg's duet parts, and a great job on the pre-Infinity stuff on the 3 Hour Tour...........
but I say retire the duets as they've done them every year since '98, replace them with new stuff, let Deen sing a couple songs a night and JSS the rest and let Cain play keyboards and save the voice for solo albums.

I've wanted a newly recorded version of old Journey material for years but think it just feels more credible to do it live as it doesn't look like you're trying to cash in on the old stuff as much. Would Perry have ever agreed to a studio recorded release? Doubt it.

That's good, NoMoreTails but your buffonnery's already in evidence in your endless putting down of Raised On Radio. :P

For that one, I am in favor of re-recording in the studio with the new lineup. Maybe scrap all of them except IBAWY and record some new ones and rename it Freedom.

When did his say end? I thought the Houston live 81 rehash was probably done in a deal to give Journey the right to release the ill-fated Dallas 3 Hour Tour show, just as the Arrival DVD was done in the BTM editorial control deal. Did Perry's approval rights clause only run for a set number of years or only as long as the Augeri lineup was intact?

I don't think it is a step backward for him. A lot of people have wondered (me included), what would the Journey songs have sounded like with Kevin singing. Now we can find out what his twist would have been, and how good they would have been.
JSS and band not redoing the classic, is sad to hear. I would have liked to have the cd. But a new cd would be better!!!-ERIC

nothin' wrong with being stoned once in a while.

In the end, it's the band (that's remaining) that decides what they will do for their next project. If it's Perry's old material, than why should he object? Money still goes to him at the end of the day.

I'm sorry, but I have to respond. In interviews I've heard and read with Kevin, he's been spending his life wallowing around in self-pity because Perry hit the big-time and he didn't. He lets everyone know (time and time again) that he was in the music biz before Perry, so he doesn't sound like Perry, rather Perry sounds like him. I'm sick of hearing that one. I saw The Storm in concert. It was a great show and he sang his butt off, but he spent 1/4 of the show bashing Perry with Rolie laughing right along. That is not respect. I agree that he should have become Perry's replacement instead of Augeri. I think he's doing this disc for the wrong reasons. I bet he wants to prove he should have been there instead of Augeri and he wants to prove he is just as good as Perry, and that he sounds better now than the most recent Perry recordings.

Kevin is a great singer and I'm sorry he hasn't found more fame and fortune but let it go, man. Do we really need another Journey tribute album, even if this will probably be the best one yet?

I don't think you'll find too many people who'll dis-agree that it should have been Kevin over Augeri. If he trash talks Perry, it's not respect, it's jealousy. This is one fans word that we have to take with a grain of salt (no offence). I never saw the Storm live, I never saw Journey with Rolie. But I did talk to Rolie one time, and he wasn't happy to talk about Perry. Whatever the REAL deal there is, it's between the two of them.

He said in his last Q&A thing that he no longer had any ties to Journey. I also don't think they would have been seriously discussing rerecording the classics and talking about it in interviews if they didn't think it was a real possibility. Those two things together make me think he no longer has any control over such things.

I'm probably one of the few who's fine with Jonathan doing Rolie's parts in those songs.

This is what I was getting at, my comment was sarcastic because EVERYONE is creaming over Deen sounding like Perry so OBVIOUSLY the 'idea' of Deen & I duetting on the old stuff has them seeing me singing Rolie's parts because my voice is 'naturally' lower.....whatever! :)
